Acti: New COD has "unprecedented online"

Plus, more on Project Beachhead.

This year's Call of Duty offering features an "unprecedented online universe", according to Activision exec Eric Hirshberg.

Talking during an investor call earlier today, Hirshberg insisted that the as yet unannounced game will "set a new standard" for the juggernaut FPS franchise.

"The creative excellence and sheer scale of the game we are making, and the unprecedented online universe that will accompany it, will reset the bar for this genre, giving players a new level of immersion, connectivity, community and, of course, epic action."

He stopped short of going into specifics, announcing that a full reveal was due "in the coming weeks."

He also offered up a little more information regarding the Project Beachhead platform announced earlier this year – again hinting that online will be a big focus with the next entry in the series.

"On our last call, I told you that we had formed a wholly-owned development studio called Beachhead to lead the creation of an all new connected digital universe to the Call of Duty franchise," he said.

"This platform will include a suite of services and content plan that will unite and ignite the community like never before. The platform will support in-game integration and bring online experiences and console play together for the first time.

"It's been in development for almost two years and we're very excited about the increased value and excitement we can bring to our community through this platform."

Some of its features will be monetised, explained Hirshberg, though CEO Bobby Kotick later stressed there will also be "a lot of new capabilities and services provided free of charge."

Elsewhere in the presentation, Activision announced that a micro-transaction based Call of Duty title is currently being developed for the Chinese market but that there was little prospect of the game heading West.

Earlier today, a number of sources told Eurogamer that the next Call of Duty game is codenamed Project Collossus, and is due to hit shelves on 8th November.
