Im a 2 year wow player looking for something different, so Ive looked around to see whats on the market. Warhammer, Tabula Rasa, Huxley, Stargate Worlds, Vanguard, Pirates of the Burning sea. All look promising theres even word of a firefly mmo, based on EVE/SWG.
Having actually played beta or have friends in on a few of these and actually seen Vanguard in action. In my oh so humble opinion this will be pretty good.

"Vanguard: Saga of Heroes (VSH) has, up until only recently, been in a relatively poor state. The game entered beta far too early (I’d have called it an ‘Alpha’ during 2005) and showed little to no promise for the future. Fearing another EQ clone I turned away, only to give it one last go during the summer start of beta 3 (there will be a 4th and possibly 5th).
Despite still suffering from all the usual unpolished attributes that any beta MMORPG inhabits, Vanguard had considerably improved and was now in a “playable” and dare I say.. “enjoyable” state.
Vanguard is still beta, with one or two final (OPEN) beta’s due before its expected release during the first quarter of 2007. To date, of all the MMO’s I’ve tested since WoW, this is by far the most promising. The game’s strength rests firmly in its attention to detail (armour sets and Talents), balanced rewards for group play with solo flexibility and considerably open-ended exploration."
