im sure i could make tht mod myself for a fraction of tht cost

US in november... yet EU in Feb? that delay is crazy.
  • dfunked #5 1 year ago

Erm... Am I missing something here or did he just skip past explaining why the buttons are now monochrome?...

My brain is mapped to colours on the pad rather than shapes or letters so I really can't fathom the reasoning behind just dropping the colours altogether...

    $64.99, so that's £100 then?

For boring buttons and a twisty D-pad?

d-pad never needed to be raised,it was just plain too slippy.

Also, agreed on the buttons, it seems like they're using the new industry strategy of fixing one thing, while breaking another. Although I'm not convinced the d-pad IS fixed here.

  • darc #8 1 year ago

He seems pretty confident that "it's only available with the play and charge kit." I might need that repeated a few more times. ;)

Getting rid of the colors on the buttons seems pretty arbitrary. Looks cool, but will drive the mrs. crazy, since she's never memorized the positions of the letters.
  • Bernkastel #9 1 year ago

    Grey buttons?

/waits for the inevitable modern FPS color palette joke
  • darc #10 1 year ago

"Although I'm not convinced the d-pad IS fixed here."

Agreed - it seems like MS believes you can fix a bad set of switches by raising them up a few millimeters. This is the same thing they did last time, essentially (except now you can move them back if you'd like.)
  • BlinxHDD #11 1 year ago

    Microsoft's officially lost the plot.
  • Darren #12 1 year ago

Why the hell did they remove the colours from the four face buttons?

Also, why couldn't Microsoft have included this redesigned controller with the redesigned Xbox 360 S to complete the whole package since it's pretty obvious (to me anyway) that this hasn't just been done in the last few weeks? What's that... oh, that's right, I forgot... they can make more money out of their customers doing it this way! Silly me!
  • peterfll #13 1 year ago

It's AMAZING is it Larry? Personally I'm underwhelmed.
  • alimokrane #14 1 year ago

Funny how everyone is already saying the d-pad won't improve anything when they have yet to try what this does... as for the colors, I think it's a bad decision to switch to the grey-scale thing they got going.
  • buggrit #15 1 year ago

How about making it black, you dozy twats? You know, like the controller I JUST bought?
  • Skurmedel #16 1 year ago

Question is, can you actually use it for fighting games now?
  • jumpdeveraux #17 1 year ago

Utterly baffling decision on the button colours. They should reward whoever suggested that little gem with a quick flight off the top of the office building.
  • jeebthegreat #18 1 year ago

the d-pad could be an improvement. the rest of the controller looks horrible. monochrome buttons, and what's with the black bumpers and triggers?! horrible design choice!
  • butler` #19 1 year ago

    LOL

superb stuff with the dpad, but love how he glosses over everything else simply as "great improvements", and the fact they've made the four main buttons less intuitive (particularly for inexperienced console users).
  • DAN.E.B #20 1 year ago

"It has come to our attention that a lot of you are not big fans of the Dpad"

No shit Sherlock! that damn Dpad should have been sorted out years ago!!!!!
I got tired of waiting around and bought a street fighter one for about 15 pounds
so no thanks too little too late!..........oh and too expensive!
  • scottofdarwen #21 1 year ago

What a load of shit ....
  • lavalant #22 1 year ago

It's a great controller, and now much better with that awesome D-Pad, but it's a bit too late and a bit to pricey. At least they'll probably bundle that with their next gen console.
  • medicineboy #23 1 year ago

bout 40 quid with a play and charge? pretty much the same no?
  • ElNino9 #24 1 year ago

  • Dizzy #25 1 year ago

Dropping colour on buttons is a bit stupid IMHO.
  • Phantom_Dynamite #26 1 year ago

Too expensive Laz, If it came with out the play and charge kit and was the same price as a regular pad then maybe.
Never had the need for play and charge always got AA batteries charging for all the other electrical junk I have.
  • GaryHoward #27 1 year ago

No colours, no controller, no cash, comprende?
  • mossychops001 #28 1 year ago

I bet the twisting d pad thing breaks.
  • dsmx #29 1 year ago

So you raised the dpad up a bit? Thats it? Way to miss the point as to what was wrong with it, and at that price? Dear god microsoft must be smoking some strong stuff.
  • Osahi #30 1 year ago

And if it's only bundled with the play and charge, and if it's a redesign from the start. Why not build that freakin play and charge in? So you can replace it when it breaks down in what, 7 years or so?
  • bad09 #31 1 year ago

I like it but wanna see the black version. Feb seems silly if the yanks get it in November but that's just in time for the new monster PC I'm gonna build so I can wait.

Bit of a bummer they only come with play and charge though I got two cables and 3 batteries already!
  • Eldritch #32 1 year ago

Looks like it's from that old Galactica episode in which they have those white uniforms.

In any case, I'm not sure anybody asked for a raised d-pad. I'd rather have one that actually responds when I press it.

Why can't we have something like that stick on the NeoGeo Pocket?
  • UsernamePending #33 1 year ago

Microsofts answer to 3D? Black and white!
  • mkreku #34 1 year ago

Why does my right arm always go numb after a while when holding the Xbox controller?
  • Cpt_McOneball #35 1 year ago

I love the way this controller was taken back to the "labs". As if you need a laboratory to change the colour scheme and make the D pad raise up a little bit.
  • DanWhitehead #36 1 year ago

Does this mean that every existing 360 game will get a title update to remove the colours from the on-screen button prompts?
  • monkfishjoe #37 1 year ago

To repeat the comments on the forum here...

    Why the no-colour buttons now?

One step forward, two steps back...
  • Spydy #38 1 year ago

I'm surprised MS's favourite word "innovative" wasn't used. Suppose we'll have to settle for "patented" and "incredible" this time round, eh, Nelson, you walking xbox advert.
    Edited by 1 at 31/08/10 @ 20:27
  • Koozer #39 1 year ago

Waaiit, I always assumed the tacky round D-pad was because of some copyright or something, before the xbox was released I'd only ever seen it on those cheap and nasty 3rd party controllers for the N64. But Microsoft actually think a circle is a good design for a 4/8-directional pad? If you're fixing the D-pad then while you're at it why don't you add the octagon hole the analogue sticks sit in, like Nintendo do? Makes it a bit easier to run in straight lines. Yeah, it's a small thing, but I like it!

Anyway - I like my coloured buttons ta very much.
  • Fab4 #40 1 year ago

In other words..."we arent selling enough play and charge kits".
  • Haloboy #41 1 year ago

QTE events with monochrome buttons? Are they fucking insane!?

I can see it now. Light grey, dark grey, light grey, semi-light grey...er...er...wai...FFFFFFFFFFFFUCK!!!
  • Badassbab #42 1 year ago

Great but what a rip off. I wonder how much it will be in the UK. Plus I don't need a play and charge kit, why is it only available with one of those??? Plus hope one can get a black one.
  • Ryze #43 1 year ago

Idiots for removing the colours from the buttons.
  • TheFlashGuy #44 1 year ago

"and we've made the buttons grey because..." WHY?????
  • seasidebaz #45 1 year ago

I like the new colour scheme. Shame it's a prototype sample and won't make it to market, and instead the buttons will be replaced with the actual colour buttons from the current pad.
  • Quixz #46 1 year ago

Play and charge is about £16 the pad 30 = £46. £46 is about 60+ USD.

I personally don't like the grey buttons..
  • sjmlondon #47 1 year ago

It looks quite nice but I don't want to pay extra or a plug and play kit, when I've already got a stash of rechargable batteries.

Every bloody game / online guide will need two set of instructions re the removal of the colour buttons. Effing stupid idea when the casual gamer complains about controllers having too many buttons. "Come on Gran, press the light grey button on the right to reload your weapon, no no, the light light grey button to the left of that grey button and below the slighter darker grey button just above it."
Far easier with red, green, blue and yellow.

For the rest of us on here I'm sure we'll cope
  • smithdown #48 1 year ago

This on the same day as announcing an increase in Live subscription costs? Poor marketing strategizing MS me old cock-knockers. Dearie me...
  • Shikasama #49 1 year ago

I had no idea rechargable batteries were so expensive in this day and age
  • KreyAtiv #50 1 year ago

I prefer the coloured buttons and I'm fine with the current d-pad on the controller. Don't know why they are wasting money on it. That what the raised Xbox Live subscription is paying for?
  • StooMonster #51 1 year ago

I need the coloured buttons, always forget which is which and often have to look down at controller.
  • SpaceMidget75 Verified Senior Software Developer, Minerva Computer Services #52 1 year ago

If you've fixed the D-Pad, why have an option to twist it back to the shit mode? Or is it that you're not that confident you've fixed it?
  • up_the_ante #53 1 year ago

    I remember the buttons by colour - not A, B, X, Y.
  • Phishfood #54 1 year ago

I think the most superiour analouge stick so far is on the Classic Pro for Wii, it was designed just right in every way. I think Nintendo also holds the patent to for the octagonal shaped holder which is present on every Nintendo analouge stick since N64.

I see they've made the buttons grey in an attempt to appeal to the style conscious gamer. Bad move since there are games that give coloured button prompts.

The new D-Pad is a nice touch, I hope its harder to hit the diagonals with the D-Pad raised since most games only require you to hit the 4 directions for item/weapon selection.
  • witchdrash #55 1 year ago

Looks quite nice, but I've got my street fighter pad so meh on the d-pad, I'll pick this up when one of my dies
  • Mkwone #56 1 year ago

i don't think i've ever used the d-pad, i must of at some point, but then again i don't play fighting games.
  • TedMoseby #57 1 year ago

Why on earth, 5 years into the life of the console, would you change the colour scheme of the buttons? Who, in any internal testing focus group, could have ever thought that it would be a good idea? And if you were going to change them, why on earth would you change them to black, white and a couple of rather indistinguishable shades of grey?

Perhaps, it's a ploy - to make you SO annoyed with the controller when you have to keep checking which colour should be which button, that you "upgrade" to Kinect, and bypass the buttons altogether!
  • Machiavellian #58 1 year ago

It looks like they dropped the color so they can pretty much match the look of the controller. Design wise the different colors really do not match but game wise dropping the colors will definitely have an impact. All in all those games that use quick time events will be much harder for people that rely on color.

Also the only thing that's really wrong with the current Dpad is the ability to hit your diagonals. I have seen youtube videos of people doing the most complex moves in Street Fighter 4 with no problems with the 360 pad. Raising up the pad probably will help a lot of people who have problems hitting their diagonals using the older pad.

As always, having a choice is better than none so for people wondering why they still allow you to have the pad the old way is obvious. Also you can see that this design is for style not for function. In other words this looks more like a limited addition controller instead of something that will be the default within a 360 box. Probably depending on the reception of the new controller, MS will probably bundle it with the 360 keeping the old color scheme but first get all of the need it now tech people to gobble it up first especially since the 360 is still selling pretty strong.

haha, #fail MS on all counts.

go back to making mice, you did them well.
  • Power_n_Glory #62 1 year ago

Why are people moaning about the colours of the buttons? If your 5 years old or new to the Xbox I could understand that, but this pad is for all the beat em up fans who already know their way around the pad. If you can't even remember where the basic buttons are on the pad then your gonna have some serious problems on games like Tekken and Street Fighter.

This pad wasn't built for you. Stick to the old one.

I think the pad looks cool, but for beat em ups I'll use an arcade stick so won't need it. Looks decent though. Will consider if I need a 3rd pad.
  • monkfishjoe #63 1 year ago

If this is just for fighting games then the SF4 pads are 2 for 30 at HMV at the moment. As for the colours then won't it mess up the dashboard 'instructions'
  • The_Inquisitor #64 1 year ago

I'm sure the coloured buttons will be optional, I honestly can't See Microsoft making it mandatory, especially since pretty much all games show the coloured buttons in QTEs or training at some point; I'm happy to have the choice anyway... if I'm right that is.

I find it funny when he says they've heard the "community aren't too happy with the d-pad". Did the 'community' voice their complaints by throwing a message in a bottle into the sea and it's only just been recovered?
  • whoyouknow #65 1 year ago

I'm not sure who this is for. If you're that serious about fighting games you can get a fightstick for that.
  • kimchibaka #66 1 year ago

The most irritating tosser I've ever seen in any games-related video (and that's saying something).
  • drhappy #67 1 year ago

THERE IS STILL A FUCKING BATTERY PACK? STILL?

jesus chris Microsoft, get with the fucking times and do what the PS3 does. have a normal wireless charger that doesn't stick and inch and a half out of the back of your fucking controller !
  • GreatBlackthorn #68 1 year ago

Well this certainly reassured me they're not abandoning the hardcore.
  • Power_n_Glory #69 1 year ago

You shouldn't need colour coding to remember where four buttons are on a control pad. That's kind of thing they do with infant toys. What is this? People are jus moaning for the sake of it. If you can type on a keyboad without colour coding then you should be fine with this. It's MS's fault for assuming they had a mature audience. Kinect should really appeal to some you guys. No buttons or colour coding to worry about at all. lol
  • FogHeart #70 1 year ago

I think I can see what they've done with the D-pad here. The plus sign doesn't raise or lower, but the gaps between the horizontal and vertical bars of the plus - the 'diagonal corners' - raise and lower. This means that YOU CANNOT HIT DIAGONALS!

Yes, I can see that, since when I use the D pad to change weapons or move a selection I am constantly going across as well as up/down, and vice versa. So it was fine for fighting before, this has made it good for games where D pad is about selection etc.

God, navigating the shop in Dead Space was a nightmare, this is right for that kind of issue.
  • danathjo #71 1 year ago

one step forward, two steps back anyone?
  • Haloboy #72 1 year ago

You shouldn't need colour coding to remember where four buttons are on a control pad.

If I want a traditional coke I choose red. If I want a diet coke I choose silver. If I want coke zero I choose black. And such is life and all things within.

    Life is colourful, not colourless.
  • reddin321 #73 1 year ago

getting rid of the coloured buttons seems like a bad idea. I will see how/if the d-pad has improved when I get my hands on one.
  • FWB #74 1 year ago

$65 for a rotating D-pad? Let me brace myself for this...

    Ahem...

    Go fuck yourself.

    Thank you

Now can I have Syndicate 3 and NOT as a FPS.
  • sfp_noodle #75 1 year ago

Erm correct me if I'm wrong, but didn't MS already release a supposedly 'limited edition' green controller that was supposed to have a better d-pad for games such as PES and Street Fighter? Reviews for that pad were pretty meh and this just looks like a gimicky pile of wank!So now when I press up, I won't only turn left, I'll probably do a 360 on the spot in Gears of War 3 whilst some fucking locust rapes me.

    *applaudes sarcastically* Bravo MS, bravo...
  • Zaiz #76 1 year ago

  • FWB #77 1 year ago

I like being raped by locusts.
  • polar #78 1 year ago

    "We heard from the community"....

Let's hope they listen to all the complaints flowing in about the removal of the colour coded face buttons and change it back to the way it was - what a bizarre choice.

The d-pad on the 360 joypad was always horrendously bad - not just for fighting games, but for all games. It's so hard to hit diagonals. I welcome the change and I'm glad that MS are looking to improve and upgrade their hardware, though I wish they had done it all at once, instead of adding bits and bobs piecemeal. HDMI, bigger hard drives, quiter drives, built in wireless etc. They're siphoning money off bit by bit and I've decided not to buy into it anymore. They should have just built the 360 properly in the first place.

One thing's for certain - there's no way in hell I'd pay anywhere near €65 for one. Not a chance.
  • Gl3n #79 1 year ago

Was anyone else intensely irritated by this dude's body language?
  • polymorph #80 1 year ago

@ PHISHFOOD, I think nintendo also has the patent on the"plus dpad" hence why the snes pad is the best non analogue pad ever!!
  • Harmonica #81 1 year ago

This controller is obviously for people who want a new gadget for their 360 who already have the coloured buttons ingrained into their system. I don't see any problem with that, it looks pretty neat.

The d-pad thing is because of Nintendo's copyright on the cross shaped D-pad so they've obviously had to think up some way they can use the cross shape without infringing their copyright.

Gl3n: no, because normal people don't get annoyed over others body language, especially when they're so completely harmless as Major Nelson.
  • penhalion #82 1 year ago

The grey buttons ensure that I will never ever buy one of these controllers.
  • NewbieZilla #83 1 year ago

The merits of the new dpad are an unknown at this point. The colour change on the face buttons is a "huh?" but the price point is most certainly a WTF?
  • Bander #84 1 year ago

I like the idea of raising the d-button by twisting it. It would be a great addition to handhelds and phones that need to be slim and fit in a pocket. For example, the speakers in the DS could be made larger, or the lid thinner, if the controls could be made flush with the lower part of the machine. Perhaps the lid hinge could trigger the mechanism to raise or lower the d-button if it was made out of robust materials.

But what's the point in making the d-button sink into a regular controller when the analogue sticks are still raised?

Also, the best 8-way d-button was on the 6 button Megadrive pad. Very closely followed by the Japanese Saturn pad/NiGHTS controller ones, except they weren't quite so ergonomic if you had a long thumbnail.
  • Sir_TimAlot #85 1 year ago

3 months to translate a controller? i don't get it...all in all stupidest thing i have seen in a long time.
  • cyber_nicco #86 1 year ago

I think many of you idiots are missing the point that the four cardinal directions (N, S, E, W) are a seperate piece from the rest of the d-pad, so the twisting motion raises just the "plus sign" part - seperating it from the rest. It is not just raising the whole thing. Also, the price is the same, I think, as the current controller + the rechargeable kit. I'm not saying the new d-pad thing will work, but I think some of you haven't really paid close attention to (or watched at all) the video.

Oh, but taking away the colored buttons is madness!
  • chronom4n #87 1 year ago

FFS, why change the colours on the buttons? that's just plain stupid. The colours for me made it easier to remember which buttons to press and for friends etc, the colours made it easier to tell them which button to press. I just did not see that one coming.
  • kaya08 #88 1 year ago

Anyone who wanted a controller with a decent dpad bought the street fighter pad for a fraction of the cost months ago.
Doubt this will improve on it so ... meh
  • Duchessprozac #89 1 year ago

It looks very pretty, yes, but without the colours it'll make things difficult, for sure.

I know my way around the controller, but in quite a few games when they give directions I could find it very difficult to tell which button they expect me to press were it not for the colours. Also for quick time events, as others have mentioned, it's easier to equate the colour to the button rather than ABXY in shades of black and grey.

I'm not sure about the D-pad, either. although I'm hopeful MS know what they're doing with that.

  • Razorus #90 1 year ago

Well that's.....a bit boring isn't it? Monochrome, a D-Pad that is essentially a Nintendo one that should have been the original model from the Xbox 1, and an almost 3 month delay for a European release that makes me feel like the UK is a third world country.
It'll probably be more expensive here too.
  • t8yman #91 1 year ago

THERE IS STILL A FUCKING BATTERY PACK? STILL?

jesus chris Microsoft, get with the fucking times and do what the PS3 does. have a normal wireless charger that doesn't stick and inch and a half out of the back of your fucking controller !

and when your PS3 battery dies you simply swap it with anothe.....

oh wait, its built into the unit?

so I need a new controller?

Removing the color from the ABXY buttons? Great, way to mess up the controller color scheme that is being used in thousands of games now. Are the magic colors in Fable 3 going to be shades of grey now too?
  • Lukree #93 1 year ago

I work as an UI/UX designer and seeing big company which has made a lot of good work with console ui has made such a decision to remove the colors from the buttons.

    It is so stupid!
  • Avaloner #94 1 year ago

Spent the best of 10 minutes trying to figure out why they made the buttons monochrome, why the pad is in tacky silver and the pad got that ugly black border, why the controllers bundled with the new x-box do not have the improved dpad feature and why it comes with a play and charge kit. I have no idea.
  • Moonprince #95 1 year ago

t8yman - if bat dies sony replace it so, yeah...
  • Tinrib72 #96 1 year ago

They took it the 'lab' (Marketing offices) and thought about how they could make money from old rope....Ta-dah!!

I'll add to the grey button debate. Its a shit idea. Not that I play looking at my controller buttons all the time but with the odd QTE I need a quick glance at the pretty colours.

Oh and $64....really!? Will probably equate to the same in sterling and euros. Go stick it where the sun dont shine.
  • Skorms-Boss #97 1 year ago

Microsoft Evil Brain Boss Man- "we need more money"
Microsoft Drones- "But oh mighty one, we've increased the price of live, we over charge for our games and release crap that no one wants, how else can we bring in the money oh evil one?"
Microsoft Evil Brain Boss Man- "You shall create a controller, a controller that's neither use nor ornament, and we shall charge them 65 bucks for it! Now go!"
  • Bander #98 1 year ago

I'm quite happy about the buttons. Being a bit colour-blind, maybe this will mean an end to games that require me to be able to tell green and yellow apart! I can see the two colours clearly on the pad, but on screen they look near identical to me because developers often go for a really bright shade of green.
  • Der_tolle_Emil #99 1 year ago

I do need a new play and charge kit so this is quite tempting regardless of the steep price. Too bad it takes another few months until it actually arrives here.
  • CaLeDee #100 1 year ago

Dunno why people care what colour the buttons are. Does it really matter? I'm sure most of us already know their position without some colour guidance.

The only problem is that a lot of games have the different buttons shown as different colours in their menus, which may seem a little odd if this controller becomes the default 360 controller.
  • Tonne #101 1 year ago

its not the grey that bothers me. but that chrome looking d-pad.
dit someone at MS stole lil'jon's grill or something
  • cw- #102 1 year ago

The next / back buttons on this video are grey ...
  • Amblin #103 1 year ago

So is the dpad fixed or not?

I modified all 8 of my pads to fit a disc under the d-pad to prevent the rubber mat/gimble from slipping. It improves the response in a big way.

I can't see that raising the pad assists it only makes it a bigger stretch for your thumb. As for the look, it's pap, bland no colour.

while i still have 8 working pads i wont be buying another.
  • matpsp #104 1 year ago

The reason they've changed the colour of the buttons is all to do with marketing. It will stand out against the current pad and therefor appear to be a completely different controller. Crafty MS up to their old tricks again unfortunately.
  • SikoSoft #105 1 year ago

I am confused - I notice he didn't even attempt to elaborate on why the ABXY buttons are gray and not colored... Does this mean that when the controller is on the buttons glow their respective color?

If it doesn't and if it just means they are all one color, this is going to do wonders in damage to the intuitive feel of so many games that show buttons on screen by color to assist you. Granted, for most of us hardcore gamers who know the buttons by heart it may not affect us much, but I pity a newer gamer playing one of the hundreds of games that show the buttons by color IN-GAME.

Plus, I honestly think more of us hardcore gamers have probably learned to associate the button placement more by the colors than the letters, meaning it can even confuse many people when playing one of these games where the color is used as an indicator in game.

I really hope the keys glow in the respective colors, otherwise, I feel this was an absolutely idiotic thing to do.

And wtf - 65 dollars? Are they trying to redefine the term "overpriced"? They only sell it with the play and charge kit because to justify the cost, when that accessory is already overpriced. I will never buy one of those play and charge kits again... I took one apart to see how it worked inside and see how I could go about replacing the batteries (since they will be useless in under a year) and I discovered that they slap in 1300 mA batters - about the cheapest ones you can buy! Almost all the rechargeable batteries I buy are 2300-2600 and they keep getting higher today, so Microsoft is really screwing you on that P&C kit as well.

With the d-pad fixed, it becomes the best controller ever, unfortunately far too late for me. I now buy all my fighting games on ps3, for my HORI fighting stick 3.

$64.99 is £42, bit steep for a dpad fix and "overall great improvments" I'll wait for someone who isn't taking Microsoft checks to review this controller to see if its worth the price.

/\ /\ Good point about colour coding the buttons to on-screen commands.

I was going to say the only reasoning I can see behind the gray buttons is that it helps prioritise the buttons, but it doesn't even do that!

'A' and 'B' or 'A' and 'X' are the primary buttons for most games, yet they are now 'A' is white, 'B' is a kind of murky gray, 'X' is ....IT DOESN'T MAKE SENSE. Prioritising 'A' and another button as different shades of gray leaving the other two buttons white would have made a little more sense, just.

The d-pad, oh the d-pad. The problem with the d-pad is that it's like a normal d-pad but the innards have been replaced by jelly. It seems spongy and like its trying to escape from its housing. Trying to press just up (and not up-left or up-right) is at times impossible. Just make it like the Dual Shock 4-point d-pad and have done with it Microsoft. Please.

How long until we see a newer model? "We listened to the xbox community and have given each face button an individual color".
