Haha, it may be juvenile but I love it.

it's like watching a monument from another era. When Arnold Schwarzenegger was a superstar, when Bruce Willis was a motherf'in badass and political correctness was not known. I grew up during that time, I like this.

Sex and videogames go together like toddlers and bleach.
  • Fab4 #5 1 year ago

Tbf, its easier to see much worse in a few more mouse clicks than it takes to watch that trailer vid.

Edit: For example, my favourite ad on Dutch TV at the moment :p

This is what Levine was talking about.

It's like anti-sexy. Jerkily animated characatures that are supposed to be 'hot'. I'll never understand how people can feel they are sexy in any way whatsoever.

At least there should be some really powerful ass-jiggle though. It's the only way to add depth to the story.

Although not my cup of tea, we all know what Duke is and that is fair enough.

As a female gamer I am infinitely more offended by the We Dare game with its nice modern questioning: sports questions for the men (in blue of course), housework and Jane Austin for the women (in pink of course).

@DiamondIce - I think we all, male and female, can be equally offended by We Dare - that Ubisoft think gamers are thick enough to buy that crap.

Though personally I'm even more offended that there's a "Battle of the Sexes" mode in the game at all.

There are plenty of people like Shikasama who have missed the point of this game. It's not trying to push the videogame industry past puberty, it's not inviting intellectual debate about sex in videogames or how women are portrayed in this medium. It's an old school, immature barrel of fun with it's tongue rooted firmly in it's cheek and really shouldn't be taken seriously at all.

There are people out there who are supposedly passionate about videogames and want the rest of the world to take their favourite medium seriously as an art form. These people seem to be so afraid that a game like Duke Nukem Forever will hinder the progress of this coming to fruition. Well balls to that, the film industry had to go through a similar rite of passage and has long been established as a credible art medium and look at the amount of stupid dumb fun movies that frequently get released. The art world doesn't throw it's arms up and tell the film industry to stand in the corner out of the way because it's not art anymore, does it?

The difference between this and the Elizabeth titty show of Ken Levine's Bioshock Infinite is that this is more honest.
  • BishBashRoss #12 1 year ago

The controversy is covering up the real issue here. That it's not funny, clever or in any other way redeeming. It will more than likely be a below average shooter relying on nostalgia, notoriety and playground humour to sell any copies at all.
  • Shikasama #13 1 year ago

randyronald - Reading an awful lot into two lines about me not finding animated characters sexy there aren't you. Perhaps you missed the point? Glad you managed to read between the lines and see me shouting GAMES ARE ART.

I don't buy the 'old school satirist' defence on the whole. If I was to make a game about lynching nigger slaves in Texas during the 30s while they run about shouting 'shoop da whoop' in an exagerrated fashion, I doubt there would be as many people leaping to my defence and telling those who were offended they were missing the point or being uptight. Apparantly people should take it on the chin and say 'Stop being stupid, it's SUPPOSED to be racist so it's ok'.

However, in the main, I couldn't give a shit about Duke Nukem. I didn't play the first one and have little interest in another FPS game. The responses of people on both sides of the fence about the games content have been incredibly annoying though. Can't decide who's worse, the puritanical 'THIS GAME HURTS WOMEN' or the smug, self enlightened 'FFS ITS A JOKE' crowd.

Personally I hope you eat each other.

Hopfully there is no censorship in the full game as in this trailer and +1 to subdominator
  • arcam #16 1 year ago

Shikasama's getting a bit hysterical. Someone slap him on the arse.
  • carlitoswagon #17 1 year ago

I love this. It's the equivolent of shitting all over political correctness. Fuck yeah.....
  • StolenGlory #18 1 year ago

"If I was to make a game about lynching nigger slaves"

Regardless of the context of your arguement, that type of racist slang is wholly inapprorpiate.

    End of.

  • Sodding_Gamer #20 1 year ago

@Subdominator I wish the world was back in that era. Politics and political correctness is more irritating than the local fire safety warden coming round my office thinking he is the big man!
  • StolenGlory #21 1 year ago

I am surprised that Gearbox don't release a trailer of the Capture The Babe mode with a certain Prodigy song being played in the background.

  • rayscoota #23 1 year ago

Great movie, pity about the tacky ps3 ad tacked on to the front.
  • Shikasama #24 1 year ago

StolenGlory - No you're wrong, I was being satirical, old school and immature. Very tongue in cheek. Hell it's just a videogame right? Harking back to a simpler time and playing on stereotypes.

If racism is racism regardless of context than sexism is sexism regardless of context. You can't excuse one and condemn the other. I appreciate you nailing the point.

End of. (Makes you feel very correct and assertive when you sign off with that doesn't it?)

The Duke is what would come out if you cross Johnny Bravo with Beavis and Butthead and gave them the scoring-abilities of Barney Stinson.
    Love it!

  • randyronald #28 1 year ago

Well actually Shikasama, my post wasn't dwelling on you but perhaps I fitting your post within the context of my argument didn't make this clear.

I sort of see your point about how we can all have a giggle at Duke's chauvinist behaviour but would balk at a stab of making racism funny. But I don't agree. For starters, racism is casually mocked in many places anyway, particularly in tv shows like Family Guy or South Park. It's just not done to the extent in your post, which would be fired down without question as being distasteful.

I think Duke goes as far in as what's acceptable with the issue of sexism as Family Guy goes with the issue of racism. We find Duke so funny because of the absurdity of it. I'm not going to claim it's a clever satire of action heroes of old, but it certainly is imitating that old "Flat-tops, guns and babes" style and is clearly punching for comedy. It's having a laugh at itself and the genre it represents rather than at women.

I'd be more embarrassed if my wife caught me playing this game than I would if she caught me giving the dog a happy finish.

Now come on guys, i'm sure they are very intellegent women who are a credit to the working dynamic of our societys. They also happen to have very delicious looking chests, and I have no complaints regarding this, or the video. ^_^
