You're right to assume that Viewtiful Joe 2 was released for the Gamecube and PS2 around the same time, as the PS2 version was released about 2/3 weeks after the Gamecube version.
Speaking of Viewtiful Joe, I hope that Capcom lets Platinum Games make Viewtiful Joe 3, as the second game had a (sort of) cliffhanger ending.
