Nice work EG, informative without being overly praising.

"Making games is managing your fears. Its respect for what other people do. we wouldn't be who we are without them doing their own thing. They are going through the same creative fears" Ea should look to this guy when speaking about their and other peoples games.

Loved BF1942, I only remember bits and pieces now but I remember laughing my ass off so much on the Africa levels, mainly due to the amount of hilarity that could be caused by a Nazi jeep being driven full speed while loaded with C4 :) I hope that BF3 brings back some of the 1942 style conquest maps. As much as I have enjoyed them, a lot of the maps in BFBC2 just arent large enough in scope to allow conquest mode to really work properly. Heavy Metal (one of the dlc maps) is the only one that comes close to old gems like El Alamein, Wake Island, and Gazala. Fingers crossed though :)

Fantastic video - very informative! I didn't quite appreciate the scope and scale of the original BF 1942 - way ahead of its time!

Canny wait for the new one - have to look at the calender and see which of the autumn games i can afford...it could be a lean xmas at mine.

I have a PS3 but found this video quite amusing...

There are some pretty questionable affirmations in the narration of this video, BF:Vietnam seemed like a definitive sequel to me for one thing and it would've been nice to have at least a passing mention for the dedicated modding community (not to be a moaning nitpicker or anything!)
    I do miss wing-walking on a B52.

@harzo, that was hilarious - thanks for sharing!

BF1942 was the stuff of legend, and never bettered.
  • Trillion #12 8 months ago

Wake Island. I still dream of that level sometimes.
  • stoopidgreg #13 8 months ago

Fascinating guy. I played some BF3 multi and single player at the Expo and I just want more.

Great interview EG really like this and it's always nice to hear the Battlefield theme tune in all its glory!

"Part II... everything you need to know about BF3 single player."

Yeah, because god knows you're desperate for content EG, and god forbid you leave any essence of surprise for the player.
  • Lukree #16 8 months ago

With BF1942 you were able to steer the aircraft carrier next to the island and "ease" the conquest that way. Hilarious stuff!

How can such a mild-mannered gentleman have conjured up such great games about WAR?
  • NotoriousRidah #18 8 months ago

Now that this game is ready to go don't you think it's about time for Rallysport Challenge 3, Dice?

"...BATTLEFIELD 3. Written, Presented and Produced by Johnny Minkley."

    Heh, nice one Mr. Minkley.

To me, DICE are the best in the biz. I can't even guess at the number of hours of entertainment they've provided me with over the years, and they deserve all the success. Light up those cigars you goofy Swedes.

I used to utterly despise BF back in the day. All my friends raved about how realistic it was because it "allowed large-scale battles with tanks, aeroplanes and infantry (oh my!)". I tried telling them how arcadey it felt, how unrealistic the physics were after having played Operation Flashpoint - but sadly, they would not even try Operation Flashpoint. For this reason, I've always held a personal dislike for BF1942. It's a game, in my opinion, which was grossly overrated and was lauded by the casual market.

I'm concerned that they haven't fixed the VSync issue. There seems to be unsightly, distracting, Tearing in many of the promotional videos of Battlefield 3. Consequently, VSync should be an option that can be enabled - even on console versions of the game - although it will impact on the Frames per Second. However, I would much rather have a tear-free screen even at the cost of a slower frame rate.

Alternatively, DICE could use Triple-buffering rather than the more standard Double-buffering to stop an enabled VSync option from halving the frame rate. It is all explained here in this well-written technical article - Google VSync if you are unsure about it:

I'm also unsure about the fluidity of the Jet's HUD. Every other flight simulator I have played has been silky smooth in this respect.

Finally, I don't much care for the soldier's having a HUD. I much prefer games like Far Cry 2 that try to hide these things as much as possible to maintain player immersion. Once I know a map I don't need a floating icon showing me where the next M-COM station is, I don't even need a radar whilst I'm on foot. I wouldn't have one in real life and as has been shown in Medal of Honor Hardcore Clean Sweep the absence of it and respawns completely changes the feel of the game - no Call of Duty Run & Gun "my life is worthless" suicidal heroics. I hope some form of Hardcore, no Infantry radar, no respawns, no Ammo indicator, etc mode is made available - it would be so simple to include and attract many tactical players who normally only bother with military simulators like ARMA.

I liked the flags in Battlefield Bad Company's Conquest mode, if you must include a radar integrate it with the map on the scoreboard most people's televisions are plenty large enough these days.

How refreshing to see someone from the games industry who isnt a chest-beating, bravado-spewing corporate wanker. Seemed a genuinely nice fella who is obviously very dedicated to his work.
Tis also nice to see journalists approach their job without sounding like a desperate dad trying to impress his sons mates.
    Nice work EG
    Looking forward to part 2!

I liked battlefield vietnam the most. Ok, after 6 months of patching and tweaking, but after that i played that game for hours a day for maybe 3 or 4 years.

but 1942 was the best game i think. A new battlefield with wwii setting would be great. The modern conflict with modern weapons i like less.
  • metalangel #25 8 months ago

@Uncompetative: The HUD is there to compensate for being unable to do certain things you could in real life, like see how many grenades you still have on your webbing, or how much ammunition you have left. Even the spectacularly hardcore Red Orchestra has a HUD. There's no ammo counter, but you can make your character pull out and examine the magazine in his weapon to determine how many shots are left (and a message appears giving a rough idea of how full and heavy it feels, or not)

Thanks eurogamer you have brought back some good memories. :)

@geeza – I agree. I've been playing BF since it came out originally. While I love the newer games, there was a more sandbox feel to the 1942 maps. Saying that, when I've gone back to the first game, it does feel "empty" whereas BC2 is pretty hectic despite limited player numbers.

I want them to bring back older style maps though like Wake – it would be great to pilot warships too.
