Team Fortress 2 - Graphical style

Need 3 votes!

Team Fortress 2's bold visual style makes it instantly recognisable. The enormous upheaval in visual styles between the initial screenshots and what we see now was the result of a long process of design decisions, all thoughtfully explained for you here.

I'd love to know what he was saying. The stuff early on about sillouettes and basic team base colours is clever though.

Love the facial animation at the end too!

Looking forward to this a lot!!!

Couldn't have said it better myself. My first rim term ends in a month.

Had no clue what he was talking about. Sounded like something out of Star Trek. Reverse the polarity!

On another note, did anyone else notice with the HW guy at the end how the tracer bullets didn't seem to be coming out of the end of his gatling gun?

This is nice art and a proper in-depth commentary on it, the like of which should be encouraged, but totally out of place in this game. It's all very well trying to make your game look like a Miyazaki film or a fashionably retro advert, but neither of these styles suit a game composed entirely of pitched battles and immense machineguns.

The art direction is fantastic and the unique graphical style is a breath of fresh air. It does suit the TF2 gameplay style, which is much more fun-oriented and than CS, and where the particular classes are very distinct and disparate. The Source engine really looks wretched compared to the latest games, especially with Bioshock, UT3 and Crysis all on the horizon, so maybe this approach is a smart move.

I think this and portal must be budget prototypes as they are releasing both in the orange box for half life ep. 2

What? the art style fits perfectly for a game like Team Fortress. Have you played any of the previous incarnations?

EDIT:

Also, I'd love to see the staff at Blizzard doing technical videos like the ones Valve does.

I've studied most of those terms on a programming degree course, but after a while, all I heard was 'blah blah blah'.
