The next-gen Star Wars game is on its way, and it's starting to look mighty impressive. Here we have a couple of tech demos that illustrate a few of the game's features.

    I think most machines would struggle to show that sort of detail and keep sharp textures and high poly models. It does look impressive though. I like the firing R2 units at it haha :p

    Was there a lot plywood in Star Wars? Surely carbonite is the MDF of the future (or the far away past, apparently).

    And forget lasers, you lot are obviously missing the most important potential use! Force powers! Pushing bad guys into stuff and throwing stuff at bad guys! Why are you getting so hung up on lasers fgs?

    interesting, however i see one problem here. Since when did they have wood in starwars. Physics programers just wasted their time with that one.

    Yeah, I was just thinking that myself. I suppose the Ewoks use lots of wood. Though I'm fairly sure this game won't feature Ewoks. Which is a shame, as it would be great to kick the shit out of one.

    Meh, they clearly had to turn vsync OFF to achieve respectable framerates... the screen was tearing as a paper foil (i'm impressed! :p)

    Either those storm troopers were exceptionally heavy or the beams were made of balsa wood. I'd like to see a demonstration comparison between different materials in the game, such as the plywood we've already seen, chipboard and a hard wood, like cherry, or oak. If all "wood" in the game has the same resistances and tolerances then there's little point putting this system in. You may as well save cpu cycles and use the traditional break-away modeling. (this applies to any materials, not just "wood" but metals, glass and plastics)

    im sure you could get sotrmtroopers to grab onto blocks of wood with a lot less effort than giving them a whole nervous system....

    If all the nervous system did was have them grab wood then perhaps you'd be right. But we're clearly told it does more, so you're wrong :)

    ignore the framerate - I've seen this video elsewhere and it was rock solid and smooth as silk.
    Sorry EG but your flash video player is a bit crap which doesn't help.

    and NONE of this shit will be on the PS2/PSP or DS (and prob not the wii) - all of this takes big processor power and Lucasarts have said this is only for next gen consoles.

    Christ, i'd have thought intelligent reviews went hand-in-hand with an intelligent reader base, but apparently not. Just because they're using wood as an example doesn't mean the entire game is going to be set in B&Q.

    Wood is a common material from the real world, and so is used as a comparison between reality and the game's physics - people already know how they expect the material to react, and so it's the tech-demo's job to get as close to that expectation as possible.

    however, for all their rabbiting on about how the plywood will break differently depending on where it is hit, it still has the same bloody breakpoints each time they knock it down! Okay, so it has a higher resolution break-mesh but it's still ends up with the same effect. May as well save on cpu cycles.

    looks cool, i suppose the reason for using wood is that virtually every other common material wouldn't damage in a spectacular way, it would have been cool to see some metal denting though

    wonder how the player will interact with these environments? or will they be a camera that holds a jump that hops around like in most other games while the NPCs have all the fun
