    wasn't this supposed to be a 2.5D side scroller that brought sonic to his original roots? What happened?

    LMAO!

    Sonic was slower back in the Megadrive days and that's what made the games such solid platformers. They were fast, but controllable. One of modern day Sonic's biggest flaws is that it's TOO fast and Sega can't build levels to handle that speed.
