Looks excellent, but a lot like a game version of LA Confidential.

"Looks excellent, but a lot like a game version of LA Confidential."

Do you know what film noir is? Anyway, really looking forward to this.
  • Murby #3 2 years ago

Jesus, the Lip Sync is some of the best I've ever seen in a game!
  • Deckard1 #4 2 years ago

The developers earlier claims that they'd beaten uncanny valley seem a bit off ha. I've never been to uncanny valley, but I'm pretty sure everyone living there looks exactly like this.

Game looks very good though - right up my street.
  • chessboxer #5 2 years ago

I would be interested to know if these are in-engine pre-rendered cut scenes or real time.
  • kangarootoo #6 2 years ago

The detail in the faces is excellent.

If I had to nitpick, I'd say there something slightly "botox" about the faces (the edges of the faces don't move the way they should), and the more extreme expressions that use more of the face look best ("not gonna happen fellas" is a good example of this).

    Gameplay footage next please :)
  • kangarootoo #7 2 years ago

    @Murby

Its not lip sync. They used that "mo-cap the face using lots of little mo-cap points" technique as the audio was recorded, so the face movements we see are those of the actor at the time they spoke the dialogue we are hearing (that is a terrible sentence, but you get the picture). That is why it looks so spot on.
  • Ultrasoundwave #8 2 years ago

Looks amazing, can't tell if the main guy is Ken Cosgrove from Mad Men???, I recognise a few of the other actors though - brilliant.
Let's hope it's up there with Red Dead and GTAIV....
  • Rowlsten #9 2 years ago

A true landmark, just think how this is going to affect the next GTA!

    Roll on Spring!
  • Kanjin #10 2 years ago

It looks like Mafia II, but good.
  • Murby #11 2 years ago

    Ahh that explains it lol

Seemed to good to be someone sat there tweaking the lips!
  • leaveitout #12 2 years ago

Look's good. That's definitely Pete Postlethwaite with the Irish accent, and Ken Cosgrove from Mad Men. The faces could do with some wrinkle maps to stop them looking so botoxy though.
  • Tomo #13 2 years ago

Looks absolutely stonking. Next year's Red Dead.
  • TLKCydonia #14 2 years ago

IMHO, it looks like they've just amplified the worst parts of GTA IV and Red Dead - the overlong, tired story with dialogue that repeats itself so many times (John "I just want my normal family life back" Marsden, I'm looking at you...) as you escort the characters around for 20 minutes to get to the next cutscene. it's and interesting premise, but I'm tired if Rockstars' model now, they take themselves far too seriously for my liking. graphics too, apart from the mocap faces look dated.

still, there's hope, and the critics will adore it.
  • mashk #15 2 years ago

I absolutely love film noir, and this looks superb. I wonder if there'll be a B & W option for extra authenticity.
  • Ryboy #16 2 years ago

    The lip syncing looks incredible.
  • makeamazing #17 2 years ago

Looks great and of an interesting time period...it actually reminds me of a 1960's movie... (perhaps thats what they tried to convey).. Glad there are teams like Rockstar that invest this much in games, as me i like depth :D
  • Vemsie #18 2 years ago

@Cydonia Well, you gotta give 'em credit (though Rockstar is not the developer) for tackling a genre we rarely see in games and a genre that needs dialogue and storytelling at that. So far, so good it seems and I like that the gameplay is apprently focused around interrogations and investigations instead of bang bang most of the time. Interested,
  • Caimbeul #19 2 years ago

Lip sync looking great just like they said in edge ages ago, only trouble is: Its a rockstar game which means really poor performance even on uber spec PC, just like their other titles.
  • solidSnake04 #20 2 years ago

damn this lip sync is something else
  • zoidberg #21 2 years ago

Yup. L.A. Confidential in game form. Exactly like the movie, probably with the same 3 man arc.
  • paulf #22 2 years ago

  • beatwolf #23 2 years ago

goddammit im looking forward to this.. hopefully the word "multiplayer" won't appear in the main menu.
  • mkreku #24 2 years ago

I would have been happier with a Red Dead Redemption PC reveal.. but this looks good too!
  • jambo74 #25 2 years ago

  • jambo74 #26 2 years ago

Yep mkreku - another 360 PS3 only game to dream off.
  • drhickman1983 #27 2 years ago

I've been intrigued by this title since I first heard about it. I agree with Deckard1 above, the dev's earlier claims to have avoided uncanny valley were (as I expected) premature, though as pointed out the lip sync is good (although I have to admit, it's not something I actually paid attention to until I read the comments praising it).

Still, this hasn't done much to lower my interest, one to keep an eye on.
  • metamorphic #28 2 years ago

Fucking awesome. Return ye mystery/adventure game that I loved from ye childhood.
  • geeza2020 #29 2 years ago

I've just recently finished Red Dead Redemption and the cut scenes in that are absolutely brilliant ,with Marston coming across as more likeable and human than any other character I've played. BUT after seeing this trailer, it looks like Rockstar are set to take visually believable characters to the next level.
  • evild_edd #30 2 years ago

Looks impressive. I just hope it's a 'proper story game' rather than the pointless, rambling, vacuous, open-world nonsense that R* usually put out. (an opinion few would share, I admit, looking at GTA and RDR sales figures...)
  • sadakos_fury #31 2 years ago

I agree the lip sync is incredible.
The sound is amazing too. Sounds like it was recorded on location, like a movie. As opposed to a bunch of ex-panto d-listers huddled around a mike in a studio.
    Looking forward to this one.
  • Bealsy #32 2 years ago

fuck me, that looks a bit impressive...

/buggers off to shopto to pre-order
  • dadrester #33 2 years ago

to me, character models have been done better elsewhere, but the mocap is mind blowing. It could be that the faces are great (though you can see polys around the ears) but the brilliance of the mocap is what's sending it down the valley.

if expressions and so forth are actually used as a game feature (i.e. the player has to judge oif someone is lying/scared etc) then this could truly be a giant leap.
  • smoothpete #34 2 years ago

Can you all read this preview please so I don't have to correct you all on how they did the mo-cap and lip syncing.

(it's neither mo-cap nor lip synching in the usual sense of those terms)

    http://forums.gametrailers.com/thread/l-...

I'm looking forward to this game more than any other I can remember.
  • peppergomez #35 2 years ago

Pretty ugly graphics overall, especially in the faces.
  • Dogs-in-Hats #36 2 years ago

Let's hope it plays better than the Getaway

  • trip919 #37 2 years ago

Can't say I'm impressed really. Need to see more.
  • lewisg #38 2 years ago

Lip sync is incredible and yet the faces still seem slightly off to me, a little flat, but I think that's just some uncanny valley shit going on there...
Still, I can't wait for this game.
  • neems #39 2 years ago

It's not uncanny valley at all, that would be if the graphics were so lifelike that there was something subconsciously unsettling about it. They've avoided it by making the graphics not that great - not that it looks terrible by any means.

Also, the Irish police officer is clearly the bad guy.
  • kangarootoo #40 2 years ago

    @smoothpete

Good link. That is even cooler :)
