Rage - In-game teaser

Published 20 August, 2008 Duration 2:15

A lot of this will look familiar to those of you who've been keeping an eye on Rage, harvested as it is from previous trailers. What we didn't know, however, is that id Software is claiming this is all in-game footage, not rendered. Over to you.

The character design is crap. I like the look of the environments, though.

I like the look of this, but I'm yet to be totally blown away.
  • illusiondance #3 4 years ago

    hmm, might be ok.
isnt someone making a madmax game too?
  • HolyJebus #4 4 years ago

Anyone else spot Geri Haliwell in that?
  • Der_tolle_Emil #5 4 years ago

Looks very impressive from a technical point of view. It does have pre-rendered FMV quality I think. I hope the gameplay will be just as good as this is looking.

One irritating thing about the trailer: when the car jumps off the cliff and lands next to the other car.. it falls like ten meters and it doesn't even bounce once. It just lands perfectly flat and continues to drive! What kind of car physics is that?

I wasn't aware there was any debate over this being in-game or not.

    Looks sweet.

Why would anyone think that was pre-rendered??

I don't see any element of that video that couldn't reasonably be done in-engine. Does it really look dramatically better than Unreal 3.0? Check out Gears of War 2...

Plus this is Carmack / ID Tech 5 so why the hell not?? :)
  • Darkedge #9 4 years ago

ID has always said that any rage/tech5 footage is in engine/in game. When have iD EVER used pre rendered cgi to show off a game? Oh yeah never.
Looks most impressive, can't wait to see if it's a good game not just cool tech demo

    chara design crap?
its a bit of a blade-runner rip off but would win awards compared to the absurd bollocks ID used to do.
  • hiddenranbir #11 4 years ago

Not surprised that it isn't pre-rendered. It isn't as if we haven't had the tech for a while.

"I wasn't aware there was any debate over this being in-game or not. "

me neither. looks absolutely stunning. and you can tell it's in-engine because there are several artifacts such as the shadow popping in on the water tower at 0:56.
  • Quint2020 #13 4 years ago

I'll make a decision when I actually see some gameplay.
  • Xerx3s #14 4 years ago

one of the major plus sides for me is that it's not UE3.0 identikit. Hopefully other companies will start using this engine more.
  • dr_faulk #15 4 years ago

I believe them. But it could be runnning on Quad SLI! =P

I'm just thinking... why weren't id given the Fallout licence?
    These are great graphics.
  • peak_performance #17 4 years ago

I think the look of the game is stunning - design that complements the post-apoc setting (the expection being that the madame is mostly flawless, stop with the romanticising already :( ) along with great visuals. Fantastic animations as well, probably the best I've seen in-game yet, characters actually seem to have real weight.

It'll of course come down to the gameplay in the end. That's impossible to judge from this - but to me, Id usually nails the character movement and have some weapons that are fun to use which is more than I can say about most other shooters. Hopefully this time the character control will be used in interesting encounters instead of closet monsters.

    Looks really nice.
My only fear is that will it offer anything particularly new to the genre? Although the driving sections look like motorstorm with guns, which would be cool.
  • TurboBailey #19 4 years ago

not as WOW as you'd think ID software would be capable of
  • penhalion #20 4 years ago

It's simply a lot of scripted video taken from in engine sequences. Basically it amounts to a machinema which doesn't show any real gameplay.

This is why people have been saying it's nothing more than a CGI movie. They are pretty much correct on that score.

"What we didn't know, however, is that id Software is claiming this is all in-game footage, not rendered. " - looks utterly probable that it is. Never thought it wasn't to be honest.

Game looks okay from what you can see, shame the racing won't be as good as say Motor Storm and the shooting won't match CoD4. Can't have everything I guess.
  • urban #22 4 years ago

    wow. they actually went outside.

    Id software never go outside.

    and for that i'm impressed
  • Vin #23 4 years ago

I'd die a happy man if the next Oddworld game ran off that engine.

in the future everyone will look like my cousin dave....it seems....
  • Gnort #26 4 years ago

Looks interesting. A lot like Borderlands, though, don't know which of those games entered development first.

And I'm not sure id will be able to make a decent racing game, I have a feeling that those parts of the game could be pretty throwaway.

    No, that's Bethesda.
  • Royal Fool #31 4 years ago

The outdoor environments look mighty nice, and it's pretty new ground for id software. I hope we get to see some gameplay, though.
  • ryanzero #32 4 years ago

    Character design is crap?
Are you kidding. It's definitely a mix of lots of other post-apocalyptic worlds but it blends into something unique. The voice acting and character movement are stunning.

As for the driving I think id is stepping into the future. With a fast, well-armed, and agile dune buggy Rage can top games like Halo that have bad mechanics. And it gives a break in FPS. Really I'd rather have 3rd person view in the console version to increase peripheral vision since thumbsticks can't turn as fast.
