Portal - Introduction

9 (3 ratings)

Bundled alongside Half-Life 2: Episode 2 and Team Fortress 2 in The Orange Box, Portal gives you an unusual weapon and lots of puzzles to overcome with it. The original mod was very enjoyable - this should be even better.

That actually looks really quite entertaining! I hope they go for more of a puzzley aspect than a straight combat game.

Shame the Depth of field and motion blur effects don't work in real time.

That looks amazing! Whether it holds up as an actual game is another matter, but it's a fantastic idea :)

Any reason why they couldn't? This is being developed for next generation consoles after all.

On the Steam forums, they are talking about that jack, and it seems that the post processing takes about 2 seconds per frame at the current hardware level. So they made this demo then added the post processing routines, saved each outputted image and created this video!

So until graphic cards get a little more advanced (or they optimise the code), we won't be getting these effects in real-real-time anytime soon ;)

Looks very cool, I wonder if it has anything to do with Valve snapping up the team who made Narbacular Drop? The gameplay shown in the video looks essentially identical to that game.

Valve Corporation is releasing a professionally-developed semi-sequel to Narbacular Drop entitled Portal. It is expected to be released Fall 2006, bundled with Half-Life 2: Episode Two, for PC. Some or all of the original Drop team are now employed at Valve.

It has been confirmed that Portal is to be set within the Half-Life universe, though how it will tie in with Half-Life history is at this point entirely unclear.

Other games may have tried physics first, Half Life 2 was the first to actually let the user play with the physics in a very direct way.
Prey has the portals, but the source engine gives them to the user to control and play with.
Source beats Doom 3 engine because it lets you play, I guess?

You know, this would make for an excellent puzzle shooter. Or maybe even a pure puzzler?

Will obviously be great, but I'm just hoping it doesn't get too repetitive.

At least it's not a full-price game. It's being bundled with HL2 ep 2, isn't it?

Heh, paused the vid to read some of the text:
