Operation Flashpoint 2: Dragon Rising - Realism

Ah, the faithful 5.65mm NATO round. Brings back fond memories of S.T.A.L.K.E.R.'s train yard.

Trust me, you don't want to be hit with an atomic bomb. It stings.

I bet it does smart a bit . I havent been shot either . but I'm guessing dark era is dead right . in fact you'll be probably lucky if it does sting because it means your still breathing .

I've been shot at, never hit though.
Was still a kid back then :/

5.56 isnt as bad as a 7.62 fired from an AK, the momentum in the bullet causes the back end to continue on through the front of the bullet. Meaning? The ****er does a spin and then comes apart into anything from 5-50 pieces. Meanwhile a 5.56 will at least stay in one piece so it can be taken out relatively easily (also, bulletproof jackets are more likely to be able to take the impact than 7.62) I served as a British Army medic for a few years.. not the most pleasant of experiences.

This video gives me precisely no reason to get excited about the game. They might as well have shown a tank and said "A tank is big and heavy and will squash you flat".

Move along people, nothing to see here.

BlackKaraken . thats pretty interesting . Why does the 7.62 fragment and the 5.56 stay intact . is it by accident or design . isn't some international law or treaty or convetion in force that outlaws the use of fragmenting ammo .? also , isnt the velocity of the 5 .56 greater . I'm not questioning your experience or experiences , some of which I'm sure you'd wish you hadn't had . I'm genuinly intrested .

agreed EC--this and the fact there are no ingame movies of the game (just cgi) indicate that not much may be completed.

its early days yet and all the other games were pretty amazing if not a little buggy (all fixed now...ish). also @ blackraken and dirk, i thought 5.56 was a more "humane" ammunition, as it is more likely to either get a clean quick kill or to incapacitate, and that the higher velocity meant the round could go straight through and not lodge or bounce around the body.

Modern warfare treaties aside 5.56 weighs less but achieves approximately the same result so it became Nato's favourite.
Then eventually the Russia manufacturers switched over so now EVERYONE can share bullets, friendly eh?

I heard the reason NATO uses 5.56 rounds is that they generally seriously wound rather than kill which means that that takes 2-3 people out the battle (people dragging wounded out of the area) whereas 7.62 rounds have a nasty habit of killing people outright...

I don't know whether this is bullshit but certainly interesting.

@ autogunner, depending on where it hits and how far away the person was the 5.56 wont go straight through. But they are more likely to go through and are far more stable than 7.62.

@ illusiondance, 5.56x45 ss109 from a NATO weapon (eg an L85) wont fit in an ak74 (which is also 5.56 but a 39mm length).
other way round it would fit but probably misfire. (im not insane enough to try :p).

@papasmurf630, nato uses 5.56 because its a better round, 7.62x39 is too big for its weapon class really. From experience i can honestly say that many times our squad have captured wounded hostile combatants that were left to die by their own forces... unfortunately mens morality is a little strained under fire.

Actually im not sure why i bothered to say all this as no-one will see it by now :p.

1000 feet in 3 seconds is 333 feet per second
sound travels at 333m/s a meter is 3.3 feet

the sound would reach you 1 second after the shot was fired leaving you 2 seconds to process that information before you die
