@Boomerang - missing the point slightly. It's like criticising Lego recreations for not being up to the standard of professional modelling kits.

While the author of this is, quite clearly, insane, I would love to use this as an arena when PvP is implemented.

It wasn't made by a single guy, it was made on PennyArcades multiplayer server so lots of people would have been involved.

Damn that's impressive. And that applies to a lot of the rather ambitious Minecraft projects I came across on YouTube last night - including a full scale model of the USS Enterprise and a complex subway system.

I bought the game last night and had a blast for five hours straight simply crafting stone tools and torches and digging my way through a couple of mountains . I have slightly more ambitious plans for today, but I seriously doubt I'll ever feel up the task of ever attempting to build anything approaching even a fraction of the scale of something like the Rapture recreation.
I can't even begin to imagine how many hours must go into building something like this, even for extremely experienced Minecraft players.

Why do people build amazing things out of lego or anything similar to this?

For the fun of it and the sense of achievement at the end of it having created something together with a bunch of people.

I imagine you ask "why do people build sand castles on the beach because they are only going to be washed away by the tide, how pointless" whilst kicking them down like a killjoy.
