Metal Gear Solid 4 - David Hayter satire

Published 13 June, 2008 Duration 2:01

Probably the best of the new bunch, this faux interview with David Hayter is so self referential and post modern that if you dressed it in a jumpsuit and put it in Hoxton, it'd become an extremely successful underground club phenomenon by the end of the week.

Yeah was going to say someone has been watching INLAND EMPIRE recently.

So... is that meant to be a viral ad for MGS4?
  • myiagros #2 4 years ago

it just shows that he should play snake in the MGS movie!
  • HyperShadow #3 4 years ago

I love how people have latched onto the final line of the Eurogamer MGS4 review and twisted it out of context.

Are you so blinded by the lack of a 10 at the end of the review that it has affected your understanding of the intended meaning?

"So... is that meant to be a viral ad for MGS4? "

It's one of the videoes on the game disk when you start a new game ;)

@Nick_JC1, buy it! if your a true mgs fan it's the best game ever! i do disagree with your comment on sites like this though, magazines were ok but this site is the best. i do have to completely disagree with the eurogamer reveiw for mgs4 though cumon 8/10!? imo it's a definate 10. but reallisticly should be at least 9. i cant beleive that gta4 got 10 that was silly, considering the amount of content it had taken away from its predoccesor imo only 9 for gta4. reveiws in general only give you an opinion and thats why i ony really trust them if i play the game and agree. an expensive way of doing it but hey.

@HyperShadow : No, but EG's MGS4 review was obviously a provocation and written to attract attention. Yes MGS4 is fan-service, may not move the genre forward or be a revolution, but that didn't stop EG from rating Halo 3 a 10/10 which also was fan-service without innovations. I'm not saying MGS4 should have gotten 10/10 but 8/10 is just crazy when comparing to other 8/10 games on EG.
  • Darren #7 4 years ago

gamesTM also gave MGS4 8/10 so Eurogamer aren't the only ones to rate it that "low" (I use the term loosely since I see 8/10 as a high score myself). MGS4 is one of those games which you either love every second of or you're apathetic to but no game in history has ever received the exact same score from EVERYONE so I really don't see what all the fuss is about personally. If you love the game then surely that's all that matters... no? ;)

P.S. I love the game but so far it's a 9/10 game for me (well into Act 2) but that may change to a 10 once I've completed it.
  • aldo_14 #8 4 years ago

Who'd have thought opinions on games could be subjective to the player?
  • makeamazing #9 4 years ago

    Nicely filmed,.... but what!!! lol
  • #10 4 years ago

its more the injustice of playing fair in reviews. Some warrant it others blatantly don't such as Halo3.

Best not to read any reviews and stick it to the advertising man.
  • septimus #11 4 years ago

    Great game.

This was the first video that played when I loaded the game. Hit New Game, and this came on. Couldn't help but WTF?
  • monkie_king #12 4 years ago

GamesTM, GameDaily and Edge also gave MSG4 8/10, and explained the game's flaws thoroughly. Saying it's "provocation" just because you disagree with it is nonsensical. Because it's such an arcane franchise, MGS does tend to divide opinions, but if you already know which side of the fence you stand there's no need to try and convince others.
  • Beano #13 4 years ago

@Darren: But a 2 point spread is not consistant for a site. Why have a scoring system when EG reviewers's opinions are so "random" from reviewer to reviewer?

Yes, reviews are opinions but 8/10 score is still way off... even that 8/10 is a "good" score on the EG scale.

I'm not just "compaining" about the score - the text in the review was... let's say... a provocation, overcritical and written to get attention in the gaming media. "Do not come back, Snake"... WTF?!?!

I guess Konami should have sent more "merchandising" to EG like a console bundle, helmets, DVD's, bags, etc. to help reviewing the game ;)

@monkie_king: True - As I wrote earlier, MGS4 is fan-service with flaws... just like other 10/10 games.

@Beano - I still say you're getting worked up over nothing because EG still say MGS4 is a very good game.

In an ideal world, game reviews would not have scores, instead people would have to read the review text itself and, in this case, I don't see EG being anything but honest here. Everyone has different opinions on what makes a good game good. I'd rather have an informative and honest review rather the gushing praise that IGN lavished on the game where it got 10/10 in every category.

Sorry but MGS4 might be an utterly superb game but perfect? No, it isn't, it has flaws like any other game and some may see the overuse of cutscenes as exactly that. Of course, if you love them then the game's a 10/10, isn't it? ;)
  • Buztafen #15 4 years ago

Try watching it with no sound and also not knowing who David Hayter is....its some crazy shit right there!
  • penhalion #16 4 years ago

    @Beano

Have you played or are you actually playing MGS4?

It seems to me that you are more interested in disecting the Eurogamer, Edge, Games tm etc. etc. scores than actually playing this game.

For the record I am also well into act 2 and it's bordering on a 7/8 out of 10 for me. I'm forcing myself to explore each area and avoid killing people or joining in the fighting "This is a sneak mission Snake!" is what the boss said. I'm deliberately not skipping the lengthy cut scenes and so far they have done little to explain the story or how snake started aging suddenly.

Currently the game plays less well than Snake eater, though the controls have improved over that game. At times you feel almost detached from the gameplay altogether!

I think 8/10 is the correct score in this instance as it's defnintely aimed squarely at the MGS fans. I laughed at a few in Jokes from MGS1 that I'm 100% certain only a metal gear fan would even have noticed.
  • HyperShadow #17 4 years ago

"We love you, Snake. Don't come back."

There's the last line for you, copy and pasted from the review.

I read it, as I've said before, as if MGS4 gives a fitting farewell to the (well advertised) last part of the Solid Snake story that would only be ruined for him to come back in a later sequel.

Do you believe that, after playing the game, Snake appearing in MGS5 would lessen the impact MGS4 has? If you do, then stop complaining about one throwaway line.

...I still believe because that line is written immediatley before a score that is not 10 has provoked this insane reaction.
  • Daryoon #18 4 years ago

For fuck's sake, why can't you people just shut the hell up about the review/score? THIS HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH IT!

Hayter could easily pull off live-action Snake with a bit of exercise and some good make-up.
  • guernican #19 4 years ago

"I mean is the game masterful as IGN call it, or is it not?. "

I know the idea is scary, but you could work it out for yourself.
  • CHAOS_BROON #20 4 years ago

@ penhalion, do you not know how kojimas mind works by now at least to an extent!? he isn't going to reveal a really confusing question anywhere near the begining of the game now is he im refering to your complaint about not knowing how he got old so fast, it's clear from the begining that that is one of the main questions the player is going to have on there mind. all i know is foxdie is the culprate kojima will answer everything..eventually thats the beauty of these games, but if you dont pay proper attention to cutscenes and the dialog then forget it. this i think is where many people are on the fence wih the whole series.. this is because of small minded ones that cant be bothered to get immersed into the story, which is fine but everyone knows that half the game is storytelling and if you dont like that then you probly should go and play gears of war. fuck sake!

  • penhalion #22 4 years ago

    @CHAOS_BROON

I have no idea how Kojima's mind works. I've played every metal gear even the MSX version. The cut scenes are not really interesting at all even if you listen intently to them. He seems to be preaching about the futility of war and about Liquid trying to realise the "Outer Heaven" dream of the warrior.

Otacon seems to be revealing more of the snake story than the cut scenes are as far as I have played. Are you actually playing MGS4 or are you basing your opinions on past metal gear games?
  • CHAOS_BROON #23 4 years ago

dont worry im not a hypocrite i am playing mgs4, although i dont see how anyone can give it below a 9 if they are true fans of the series seriously, i really like the ballance between gameplay and cutscenes, i always have, i dunno at the end of the day it comes down to personal choice really, i'm happy with it thats all that matters to me really. i do respect your opinion though penhalion.
  • CHAZBIGPOTATO #24 4 years ago

Beano, dont lie, everyone knows you are a fanboy. Incidentally the new tesco finest butterscotch mouses deserve 10/10.
  • craziii #25 4 years ago

it is a love or hate thing with the reviewers. I am only hateful/wrathful when the reviewer lets his/her own taste taint the reviews.

there should be 2 scores for mgs4, 11/10 for mgs fans, 8/10 for non fans.
  • CHAOS_BROON #26 4 years ago

im with you there craziii. some people just hate on mgs4 because they only own an xbox 360, and we all know its not gonna be on 360 by now. 11/10 all the way.
  • Tehren #27 4 years ago

    WTF? Totally confused here.
  • YourMessageHere #28 4 years ago

I have no idea what all this is supposed to be a satire on, but I roundly applaud EG's use of "Player Hayter" anyway.
  • Daymare #29 4 years ago

    @Arbiter

"What Penhalion actually means is that he's too much of a Xbox fanboy to allow himself to enjoy a PS3 game.
    It's very, very sad."

What Arbiter actually means is that he's too much of a PS3/MGS fanboy to allow others to dislike a PS3 game. It's very, very pathetic.
    ;)
