Does anybody know when the review embargo for Mafia II ends?
  • CaptainKid #2 2 years ago

Graphics look okay I ques, nothing like GTA4 though with its awesome lighting system.
Hopefully it has AA and no pop ups on PC.

    Edit.
    Hmm. shooting looks extremely boring..
The player clearly has difficulty aiming, like I always have with a controller.
Running, cover and aiming controls looks very clunky.

First there were announcements of announcements, then came the demos of the demo.

Next, exclusively on Eurogamer, previews of previews followed in 2011 by reviews of reviews....

    Edit: grrr typo.

Can't wait to see what intel Digital Foundry gives us on the console versions of this one. Hopefully the full game is an improvement over the demo, cause I've already preordered it for the 360.

Enjoyed the pc demo but to busy playing starcraft to get this yet. Might get it November or December.

    Played the demo, majorly disappointed!
  • Lionheart #8 2 years ago

Nice driving. Whoever is playing this must be a cross between and donkey and a monkey with leprosy ¬_¬

Does anybody know when the review embargo for Mafia II ends?

OXM gave it a 7, and that mag is not overly critical on most major releases, so erm, hope it's a fluke or otherwise 2K'd better have the embargo lifted after release
  • Shinetop #10 2 years ago

I guess I'll try the demo when I get home, but... man that looked bland and uninspired.
  • Haloboy #11 2 years ago

Never a good idea to spin the camera completely round when you are about to go into a brick wall. I'm sorry to tell you that this time you have failed.
  • geeza2020 #12 2 years ago

I played the demo at the weekend and my intial thoughts were "My god this looks horrible" and then "wow these controls are awful" but then when i got into the actual demo mission, I found myself really enjoying it. The music is pretty good, and I quite liked the characters and setting, and the to be continued moment really had me on the edge of my seat! I think this is going to be just like the first Mafia, if you can look past the slightly grubby exterior, theres going to be a nice shiny diamond of a game underneath (hopefully).

PC version is shit, textures is crap, car handling is blaaaaa,no AA x2 x4 x8 option,i'm seeing marketing shit from 2K,even 2 gtx 480's cant handle this game cause of shitty PhysX,this is fkn epic fail from 2K,screw this shit.
  • Salaminizer #14 2 years ago

    quick, hide inside a bush!!

edit: what the hell was this comment above me? the game ran super smooth here, handling behaves according to what I expect (and not what GTA IV did), cover and shooting is fine, and I'm fine with the graphics (on PC), with antialiasing on. too bad the game apparently won't get the same free pass that GTA IV had on consoles though.

Hmm, looks like the player here was even worse than me! anyway, the video does show some of the camera, control, and cover issues I also had. Its especially odd when he takes cover on the wrong side of a door :p

I thought the PC demo was promising, at least from the single mission it had. For the ten minutes or so I could run around in free roam mode though the game does reveal its weaknesses compared with other games, particularly the woeful police (who can't see you if you stand in a bush!) and pedestrian A.I. (who frequently don't react when they have a gun pointed in their faces!).

The two console versions I played were huge disappointments though after the excellence of Red Dead Redemption on the 360. Awful framerates and horrific amounts of screen tear really spoilt the whole experience for me personally so I'm thankful that a PC version exists! To think I nearly pre-ordered the 360 version as well... /shudders
  • geeza2020 #17 2 years ago

Oh yes that was another issue in the demo; for some unkown reason, people who you beat to death would scream "Don't shoot!" literally the second you hit them with the killing blow. Makes. No. Sense.
  • Harmonica #18 2 years ago

If you've got a problem with the PC version of the demo it's probably your PC. The PC version looks pretty damn nice and definitely supports AA of all varieties, just just might need to force it with your graphics card.

The console version on the other hand is ugly and runs awfully. It'll be interesting to see how many people try to overlook this fact because the gameplay was decent enough.
  • dragonlion #19 2 years ago

ive tried all platforms; clearly, PC is the best solution seconded by 360. screen tearing on PS3 is just unbearable
this video is taken from the demo not the full game... cmon call us idiots while youre at.
  • Caimbeul #20 2 years ago

Installed the Demo on steam. Awful graphics even at 1080p with max settings. Ran benchmark and something is not right. Get better result with AA enabled than without. The game looks about 3/4 year old graphically for those interested.

@ Harmonica - The game does indeed support AA but only on or off. Any specific settings would have to be forced in the GPU control panel.

Also for those saying if it runs badly it probably your PC. Maybe but not everyone. My PC flies with anything i throw at it at max settings including infamous PC killers such as Crysis etc etc

Ran this on my Mac (boot camp) and it was graphically pretty good... screen tearing on the PS3 version though and was a little more judder... but i think its still a game i will get, as i just love story driven games.
  • Buran #22 2 years ago

And people still ask why mouses are better for shooters...
  • CaptainKid #23 2 years ago

Just tried the Steam demo and the controls are indeed clunky.
I ran the game on max minus Filtering and medium shadows and the game looks better then on the video (duuh).
But buildings and stuff look flat, like it's missing good lighting or something.
Just like you see on the video, other cars ignore you and don't go out of the way.

I liked the 50's and mafia atmosphere, this is worth a download from Piratebay.
I'm not going to recommend this to my console playing friends though.

BIGGEST DISAPPOINTMENT since Unreal 2...i was praying this would be good..but its awful (360)..looks like ill wait till ive spent 1500 on a new pc :(

@CaptainKid, seriously don't be a knob... if you dont like the game then don't buy and certainly dont play it. Many people worked hard on this game (like all major games) and they dont need muppets like you saying "its crap, but its ok to pirate it". Dont try and use it looks crap as a poor mans attempt to hide your thieving cheapskate chavy nature.

Seriously some people these days really get on my nerves with their mindset.

  • CaptainKid #26 2 years ago

    @makeamazing

Yeah I know what you mean. Like going off topic and insulting someone for no reason at all.

Many people will make a lot of money on this game and they dont need muppets like you defending them to make even more money.

Damn, took forever to type this with the Mafia 2 add blocking the comments window, how ironic.
  • makeamazing #27 2 years ago

Yeah I know what you mean. Like going off topic and insulting someone for no reason at all.

Says the guy who is saying they are going to pirate a game cause they dont like what they saw in a demo.

Many people will make a lot of money on this game and they dont need muppets like you defending them to make even more money.

Yeah i am sure the people at the bottom of the game food chain at that company will make lots of money from this, why do idiots still use "they will make lots of money from the game, so its ok to pirate it" as a perfect excuse to do it. You know not everyone who probably spent hours making this game hasnt made lots of money from it? Again shows the lack of any common sense or actual brain cells. you do know that a game is made by more than the Execs who get big bucks right?
  • rumiexile #28 2 years ago

I thought it was footage from the full version ::)
  • muscleblade #29 2 years ago

I rather buy Kane & Lynch 2. This is kind of mediocre imo.
  • KreyAtiv #30 2 years ago

I have to say that I've thoroughly enjoyed the demo on each platform. Mostly doing free roam in vehilces to get the hang of them in simulation mode. There is a slight invisible wall issue the odd play through it were the car won't go past a certain point (and I don't mean the big red barriers). Other than that having fun with it.
  • SillyWullie #31 2 years ago

@spekkeh You can never ever ever trust a magazine like OXM. Their completely biased towards certain games companies. It's funded by Microsoft who obviously want to control the market. Have you ever wondered why it gets such high reviews - because they want games to sell? Every now and then they'll throw in the bad one to look like real critics but they're just cheats. For example, they gave MW2 a 10 out of 10 just to add to the hype and make millions and millions.
