LittleBigPlanet - Gameplay

Published 21 August, 2008 Duration 1:47

LittleBigPlanet is still being wheeled out at every possible opportunity, giving some people exposure fatigue even before release. Having said that, we still lap it up.

    While cute, once again the gameplay is minimal. This still looks more like a tool to make (funny) movies IMHO.

    Every time the game shows something different, people take that to be the whole game, what's wrong with you people?

    Have you not seen the very first video of thios game from last year? It showed a level being played through, nothing movie like about it.

    @Dizzy

    You beat me to it. I was about to say "Where is the F'ing gameplay in all of this stupid facial expression crap. I know the world and his dog will rush out and buy this. My question is. What the frak is it they are buying exactly?

    Seriously. Where is the game in all of this.

    There have been plenty of gameplay vids. This is an advertising/PR vid. But +1 for JMM what ever they show some will just say "Oh it's just a 2d platformer" or "Oh it's just X or Y" whilst ignoring all of the other things it is. If they could sum it all up in one gameplay vid it would be a lot more worrying no?

    Although why don't you think the demonstration of creation at the beginning is gameplay? Surely that's part of the game?

    Here is a nice long vid of gameplay ... link. With good demonstration of teamwork, use of physics, puzzles and using the 2.5D depth as well. Or just ignore all that and claim there isn't any gameplay ...

    @DrDamm and others

    This still doesn't answer my original question (asked over a year ago) Where is the game in all of this?

    There doesn't seem to be a goal. Go from the start of a level to the finish. Why? For what purpose? What is there at the end? What do I gain by finishing a level except another stick on smile or heart or block!

    Wow - just wow. You're a game developer too aren't you?

    There was me thinking games were about actually playing them and having fun rather than what you get at the end of a level. The gameplay you were asking about before? Isn't that the playing of the game?

    There'll be fun in getting from A-B in the levels from, first of all the levels which ship with the game and second of all from those levels which are designed by enthusiastic and talented amateurs. There's a wealth of 'bedroom game/level designers' out there as evidenced by mods of Unreal, Forge levels on Halo 3 and so on and so forth. Admittedly, the crucial challenge will be wading through the acres of puerile levels that many will churn out for a cheap laugh. As far as gameplay is concerned, beyond the creative aspect, as a straight platformer, it looks no less solid than some other games I could speak of. And hey, there's no sign of QTE at least ;-)

    @Farticus
    "I've still yet to see any evidence of an objective, enemy, collectable or anything but climbing/swinging over cute obstacles. Like so many others I'm loving the style but still waiting to see any playability."

    If you just watch the promo vids - which are doing a great job of getting interest in the game - then you could come to that conclusion. If you watch the gameplay vids - like the one I linked above - with an admittedly large download attached to it - then you will see all of these things though.

    As I said above demonstration of team work, use of physics, puzzles & using the 2.5D-ness. There are also collectables, hidden items, a variety of enemies and the start of a boss battle at the end. What it also demonstrates is a nice element of competition in the co-op too. See who collects the most of the standard bauble things and sections within a standard level which can set up as races and it tracks which player completes those in the quickest time.

    At the core though its a game that goes for the basic elements of what games *should* be about. Making it fun to play. What kind of craziness is that eh?
