Still doesn't look like it is going to compete with GOW. Looking very similar in art style. Does look nice, but I will be surprised if it really brings anything new to the FPS genre.

ooooo another grey / brown first person shooter on the PS3. Not sure I can contain my excitement!

Still, since Haze has turned out to be arse, this had better be good. After owning a PS3 for ages now I really need an excuse to turn it on... At the moment it's the most expensive paperweight I've ever owned.
  • mta03dc #3 4 years ago

I hope it is actually good, as opposed to a fancy tech demo
  • t1nt`1n #4 4 years ago

I own both a 360 and PS3 and this probably runs at 640x480 knowing the latest trends. High definition gaming my arse, false advertising anyone?
  • Artemis_Matsas #5 4 years ago

    It looks very good indeed.
  • Anthony_UK #6 4 years ago

I don't understand all these complaints against games set in war zones being 'grey' etc? If i'm playing a bloody & gritty FPS/3rd person war game, the last thing i'd like to be seeing personally is a bright purple battlefield......
  • andromeda #7 4 years ago

looks leagues better than Gays of War
  • Kostabi #8 4 years ago

Looks good to me, but then I'm sick of the trend of people constantly requiring the wheel to be reinvented with every game. So long as it provides plenty of entertaining bang bang shooty action I'll be happy.
  • Mr_Brown #9 4 years ago

This has got 6/10 written all over it. Didn't help with trying to over dramatise the start bit, has if this is a game people have been waiting for, for a long time. It looks decent, but not on the same level has everything currently out there. In 2009 its going to be very dated.

Pff, the in-game render they did at E3 2005 looked better than this - what have they been doing with their time? Making it look worse, that's what.

This is looking pretty good. Grey is obviously due to artistic direction.

It's not so they can spare on colours, they don't actually pay the colours they put in the game you know? :/

I think it looks damn nice. The hot colours really gain a much more strong presence when they're used in the middle of the grey palette. Cheers for the artwork and photography direction.
  • jonsaan #12 4 years ago

Looks like every other Space Marine game of the last few years. Big Yawn.
  • drumbaby #13 4 years ago

Kind of puts the plasticky on-rails artificiallity of GOW to shame. War-wise this is the real deal.

    Amazing looking stuff.
  • Cloudane #14 4 years ago

The animation and explosions look outstanding!

I reckon Killzone 2 will simply be a very good FPS similar to Call of Duty 4 in a different environment and that is no bad thing unless you are one of those people who are asking for the world.
  • mkreku #15 4 years ago

I think the Helghast is a much more interesting enemy than the locust.. And I absolutely HATE the homoerotic "muscular men with tiny heads" art direction in Gears of War..

But who in their right mind thinks this will stand up to Gears of War 2, coming out at about the same time? Say what you want about Epic, but technically they're the leaders.
  • BadBoyBonner #16 4 years ago

My only worry is just how little gameplay is being shown.

I mean this far into development - and after being developed for so long - why use pre-rendering at all? If it is pre-rendered as even that bit doesn't look like it is doing anything a current engine couldn't muster.

That said - I think this is looking like one of the best reasons to own a PS3 - and fingers crossed the gameplay is as compelling as the visuals.

edit - FK me, that Quake wars advert is annoying how it keeps covering the comments while you write them!

*This* isn't pre-rendered footage. There are plenty of other vids available of people actually playing through this section of the game ffs. Try here for example ... linky

  • NthSimulachum #18 4 years ago

    "Time to die!"

Evidently Killzone 2 will possess a much better and more fulfilling story than Gears of War.
  • brinlarden #19 4 years ago

meh explosions look shit, cheap blur effect on gun looks good.

  • Skooch #24 4 years ago

In a 1m29s trailer there was 20s of gameplay footage - what are they trying to hide?
  • DrDamn #25 4 years ago

@Skooch - probably all the stuff they then went on to let journalist play themselves ... oh hold on ... sheesh
  • BiscuitBase #26 4 years ago

Looks like the shooting in this game could be pretty fun, judging from the way the enemies react when they are hit.
  • Widge #27 4 years ago

    Actual gameplay videos you say?

If the game play is responsive, accessible and progressive they will come. This will be sick it has taken bloody long enough.
  • aticatac #30 4 years ago

This game is going to be sooooo awesome...
  • Kenshin001 #31 4 years ago

"When u see the real game, you will come to the conclusion this is all sony prerendered propaganda."

    LOL. Good one retard.
  • RazorObsession #32 4 years ago

Doesn't look as good as the controversial pre-rendered video, but still quite good. Heres hoping they actually make the game play up to standard, unlike the original...
  • Widge #33 4 years ago

...and that is the big concern with all. We'll see I guess. Its looking and moving the part, which is nice.
  • smoothpete #34 4 years ago

I don't particularly like the colour palette myself, and the explosions need some work, but otherwise it looks fantastic
  • Ryze #35 4 years ago

Sorry - I don't believe them. I'll wait until someone buys one and I can see/play it myself.
  • JediMasterMalik #36 4 years ago

It may not look as good as the pre-rendered footage (which sounds stupid to even say, seriously, get over it). But it looks really damn impressive regardless.

I see the usual trolls are here, with some new friends.
  • Widge #37 4 years ago

no no, still waiting for Negotiator to surface
  • rotmm #38 4 years ago

@foamy "This is looking pretty good. Grey is obviously due to artistic direction.

It's not so they can spare on colours, they don't actually pay the colours they put in the game you know? :/ "

Actually, colours DO cost in games. The payoff is that a reduced colour pallet in textures means that the compression levels can be higher, meaning that more textures can be used concurrently and/or performance can be improved ;)
  • T4RG4 #39 4 years ago

Doesn't look very AAA to me (maybe I'm expecting too much but that trailer left me cold). Meh.

  • DrDamn #40 4 years ago

    @rotmm

That would help within a single texture but when you are talking about hundreds of textures you're making a saving are you? For example there is nothing stopping them using purple texture for some stuff as they would take up as much space as grey ones for the same object.

Using colour for artistic/game effect is a decent idea in principle. I'd like to see more of the different game levels to make a call on how successful it is overall but it helps provide distinction/contrast between friend and foe. It can also enhance spot effects like the lighting effects (e.g. light streaming down from ceiling in the linked gameplay movie) and explosions.

Looks very nice. So what if it doesnt bring anything new to the FPS table, neither did Gears and its sequel likely wont either.

Alot of very negative comments in this section, why so? This game along with Resistance2/MSG4 makes me want a Ps3.
  • DrDamn #42 4 years ago

KZ2 gets a lot of attention from 360 fans because it is very representative of the hype and broken promises which maybe turned them away from the PS3 in the first place. The infamous pre-rendered trailer etc, etc. It is also something which gets pushed a lot by Sony but is a very long time in coming to the table and actually delivering. Some will believe it deserves to fail for those reasons.

If you get over that and look objectively at the game on it's own merits now I think it's looking promising with a lot of potential.

Gears One didn't bring anything to the FPS genre - what with it not actually being one :D. It did bring something new though and played exceptional well - despite having fairly unlike-able and poorly designed characters (IMO). I don't expect Gears 2 to bring much new, but it doesn't have to. Build steadily on one and you've got yourself a AAA title already.
  • illusiondance #43 4 years ago

Ha Ha, I'm with Dr Damn on the aesthetics, and one comment on
"muscle men with tiny heads" is right on the button.
But i loved Gears o Whores and was apparently one of the only people who loved the first killzone. (despite the gammy framerate and hilarious rag-dolling)
I personally will not run out to get a machine for this but I am keen to play. Guerilla have a top crew.
  • Triggerhappytel #44 4 years ago

Looking good. I didn't really enjoy the first game so I'll very much have to play this for myself before I'm convinced, but first impressions from the in-game footage are very good. I just hope the level design is a bit better than before, it has some proper physics and you don't get irritating teammates/a crap plot.
