Geeky as hell, but you can't but help respect the guy - he clearly knows what's going on in the gaming world today, and is certainly more than a dab hand at making them.

I don't find him at all geeky. I think he's just an intelligent, well spoken, level headed computer-genius, millionaire. Seems like a top bloke.

I envy his enthusiasm, but 'gaming' on mobile phones is just plain rubbish! Those things were made for making phone calls, not play games, listen to music and basically annoy everyone around the owner. Doesn't change the fact that Carmack is an awesome guy - "Ah well, I wrote the core engine in 3-4 weekends whilst sitting in my hotel room" - ffs...

I really like how Carmack will use simple phrases like "The games sucked!". He keeps it simple. He's a cool dude.

Wow. I always got the impression of Carmack being an arrogant, rich bastard.

How wrong was I?!

He seems like a chap!

This interview inspired me to go have a hunt for DoomRPG again, and, lo and behold, it's available on Vodafone. So I bought it, installed it, and blimey if it's not actually a lot of fun. It really does work well on a tiny screen with very simple controls - quite challenging at times, though, as I seem to be low on ammo and have to smash the zombies with my axe quite a lot.

i've seen some other interviews of him, they're really good too. the guy knows far too much. one i saw was him talking about the doom 3 engine and the lighting and shadows, specifically how its done and how they save processing power doing fancy stuff. i had no idea about 90% of the stuff but it was fascinating.
