GDC: Super Mario Galaxy - Trailer

Published 9 March, 2007 Duration 1:47

There aren't many gaming events more hotly anticipated than a new Mario game and Galaxy is a biggie. Introduced by a typically enthused Miyamoto during his his keynote speech Galaxy looks epic, innovative and quintessentially Nintendo.

It looks very nice and all, but if they manage to pull off playing and controlling that thing in an easy manner using just the wii-mote so that anybody can pick up play it (even Miyamotos wife), then it will be amazing. The whole thing looks really dissorientating, so if they can make this fit into their desire to open up gaming to everybody and make it easy to control with no camera issues then I think it will be a truly stunning achievement. Probably even more of a step forward than the first 3D Mario, Mario 64.

Looks great, although the camera angles are a bit bonkers at times!
  • ToffeeJack #5 5 years ago

I really don't like the look of this.

I hope I'm wrong but it looks way too dissorientating for my liking.

    Hope I'm wrong though

Not usually my sort of thing (hell, I've never even owned a Nintendo console). But doesn't that just look like fun incarnate? :)
  • hamstand #11 5 years ago

    mmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmummy!
  • bushwod #12 5 years ago

Although I have to agree with the comments on it looking dissorientating, I expect this is becuase we're seeing a short video with lots of cuts. I hope that when it actually comes to playing it it will feel 'right'.

Nintendo are not know for putting out dodgy games on their AA titles, so I doubt they would be showing this unless they were happy with it.

    Now we know...
    Oh yes, now we know..

    *rubs legs*
  • Meira #14 5 years ago

Its just cuts of gameplay videos, so you feel dissorientated just to watch.

I've been looking forward to this for God knows how long, but doesn't it feel like there are a few too many "Ya-haa"s and "Yee-hee"s and "Wahoo"s in there? I've never really noticed it before, but in the Galaxy footage so far Mario seems to be shouting gibberish every other second and it's really starting to get distracting.

    Maybe I'm just getting old...
  • Steroyd #16 5 years ago

Eh? What do you actually do in this game, it's something I've never actually searched for.

Do you collect stars, or shines or is back to the old Mario's where you go from beginning to end?
  • Biggles #17 5 years ago

My, that does look confusing. But then, I find any 3D mario a bit bewildering... Hope people who like this sort of thing get what they want out of it though.
  • mostly_harmless #18 5 years ago

I think I'm getting too old for this. I barely got my head around Mario 64's 3D!

Makes me laugh though when people complain that Ninty just keep banging out the same old franchises. Compare this to the original SMB! It's hardly FIFA 2007 (March 9th Edition) territory. Talk about evolution/revolution over the years...

Still, I think it should come with free drugs for the over 25s, otherwise we won't be able to cope.

  • JonFE #19 5 years ago

SMG is one of the top 3 reasons I got a Wii and this trailer justifies it, IMHO...

    LOOKS LIKE A PS2 GAME!!!

(edit: Shit, maybe i shouldve looked at the video first before posting that)

It looks like Croc on the PS1! Is that a good thing? :)
  • Willum #22 5 years ago

It looks amazing. Wouldn't mind a Wii for this...

Oh no the complaint isn't that, the complaint is that Nintendo love whoring the Mario name.

    you know:
    Mario Party
    Mario Golf
    Mario Party
    Mario DDR

    etc etc.

There are very few actual proper Mario games in terms of platformers.

Meh. Another year, another Mario game. I'm sorry, but for all the subtle tweaks in the world, this is just going to be the same old thing by and large. And I'm bored of the Mario formula at this stage. Really bored. Big fat "meh" from me.
  • FaceOmeter #25 5 years ago

"There are very few actual proper Mario games in terms of platformers."

    Lies!

    Anyway: OMGZOR
  • Les #26 5 years ago

Looks nice and like great fun. Hopefully Wii's will be available by the time this one is released... ;-)

"Mario has needed some advancement since the OK-ish Sunshine was too much like it's predecessor"

Or maybe a return to the past: I really loved the parts without the water pack. Maybe Ninty could create a downloadable game featuring just that kind of levels.

Ah hell, there went my last shield against buying a Wii. Thankfully, the stores are incapable of getting it so I cannot actually buy it yet.
  • smelly #28 5 years ago

@Steroyd : The funny thing is miyamato himself said the same thing in his speach.. (mario being used in too many non platforming games).

But the fact is, put him in a game, and it sells. "mario golf" will sell more than "nintendo golf" or perhaps even "tiger woods golf" (and cost a heck of a lot less in terms of licensing).

I keep watching this video and im still stunned about how pretty it looks. Kinda looks better (imho) than a lot of 360 games .. Which is quite impressive considering the wii is supposed to be underpowered. But it begs the question, WHY ARENT OTHER DEVS MAKING GAMES THIS NICE LOOKING FOR THE WII?
  • SeesThroughAll #29 5 years ago

WHY ARENT OTHER DEVS MAKING GAMES THIS NICE LOOKING FOR THE WII?

Because they can just quickly use the GC toolkit and spend much less time and money making crappy looking games instead. :(

"Oh no the complaint isn't that, the complaint is that Nintendo love whoring the Mario name."

Yes, there is that complaint about the Mario name, but there is also a seperate complaint about them relying on series franchises for their killer apps, like the Mario platformers, Zelda and Metroid.

Of course, WE know that they have innovated within these franchises, but for some the fact they they form part of a series seems ample excuse to dismiss them as just being the same old game. But this, as we say, is bunk.

    *cough* halo 3
*cough* mgs 4 (which is actually more like the 10th version or something)
    *cough* FFXII

    etc etc etc.

If you have a good brand which sells well, keep with it. The only reason we arent on halo 10 is because msoft havent been going that long with the xbox brand. (Flight simulator x for instance?)

Besides metroid prime is a trilogy this'll be the last one (thank gawd, i hated it)

I want it, I want it, I want IT!

    NOW ninty.

This reminds me ALOT of some of the stranger parts of Prey. The gravity switching as you move from planet to plant especially, should be fun.
