The original series up till "Kingdom under Fire: Heroes" was short and sweet, blending so many things that it was an absolute masterpiece of its time (2001).
- Total War Strategy gameplay on steroids. (Infantry, archers, artillery, monsters and cavalery dealing with such elements as weather, traps, line-of-sight, higher ground and even sunlight.)
- Dynasty Warriors 3D hack and slash as you personally lead your armies and blast battlefields with magic.
- RPG elements as you upgrade your troops and hero and even buy them equipment you'll see them wield.
- Then there's a Tolkien-esque undertone, accompanied with a bold Heavy Metal soundtrack and grim Dark Fantasy realism.
Then, just when you think that it's just blood and guts, the individual characters are actually pretty interesting once you get used to the voice acting and you ignore how confusing the over-arching story itself is. Holymen slaughtering the innocent in the name of god and dealing with their guilt, jealous Dark Elf women bickering over love while caught up in political intrigue, Racial conflict bubbling over, loyal fellowships and Juggernauts bringing dwarves and comic relief just when things get too bleak.
Loved it! Sure there were flaws, but the game was brought with such confidence that I can't help but defend it.
I felt smart stringing fast-paced tactical victories on the tune of mind-numbing guitar riffs, felt pumped slaughtering entire armies personally, felt in control grading up my armies and felt purposeful seeing those little personal stories conclude in drama or glory.
I wonder if this game will ever be as good or set the same tone...

Yarp, I know. Those were the games after Kuf:Heroes. Circle of Doom made the series go down hill. That's why I'm rooting for the newest re-iteration. Hope they get it right again.
