Far Cry 2 - Vegetation growth

6 (3 ratings)

Some footage take from Far Cry 2's impressive looking Dunia engine. Obviously trees won't regrow like this in-game, as Ubisoft representatives were keen to point out at GDC, that would be stupid. Nice though eh?

If nothing of the stuff where someone said "who gives a fuck" would have made it into games in the last 30 years, we'd still be playing Pong. Without paddles. And without a ball.

But what does it bring to the game? What? A slow procedural animation? That isn't gameplay, it's hardly relevant is it.

They might as well just make it pop back up when your back is turned and have a little monkey up top laughing at you whilst masturbating, now that is advanced emergent gameplay, in 30 years they'll wonder how we survived without masterlolmonkey tech.

It's not meant for gameplay purposes, it's clearly to show off the power and versatility of the engine!

That's probably why it isn't in the game at all, as the mini-article says. I though you were making a general point. It might have its uses one day in an RTS, for example, with growing resources. Or a lawnmower sim. :)

That's the kind of detail that makes me look at an engine as more than mere technology. There's a bit of soul encrypted into it.
It reminds me of how one of the lead designers on Crysis insisted on the importance of animals in the environments - that's a major progress from Far Cry (actually wildlife was one of the most vivid additions the patches added to Far Cry).
Before you ask, I don't have sex with animals - or trees, for that matter, although that might be fun.

One thing that always irked me about the GTA games was the fact that I could cause a complete catastrophe on a highway with ten cars totalled and burning before my very eyes, turn my back for two seconds and when I looked again everything was back to normal without a trace of the burning wreckages that were there five seconds before.

This, to me, points to a consistent world where trees slowly grow back damaged limbs. If you can't see the value in that, so be it. But for some (like me) it's a major step forward.
