Far Cry 2 - Heroes die first

8 (6 ratings)

For many people, a fresh start is a new job, or a new marriage, perhaps a new line in slightly outré knitwear. For the player of Far Cry 2 it's a chance to man up, pack up your arsenal and take on a continent. Always let the heroes die first.

Sounds like Shawn Elliot doing a piss take of the classic 'action game' cut scene. I can't believe how terrible that is, it's a parody of itself.

Voice acting aside, I love their take on that he's not your average random hero, and that he uses manipulation, betrayal etc. Would be awesome if they managed to bring that forth in the game =)

From what I could clean from the vid, I would suggest that the voice was supposed to be the main villain The Jackal, and not the player character.

It was rather out of context though and a little confusing though.

This game is embarrassing.

Imagine any film being this morally misjudged, let alone starring and actor THAT bad.

This is a marquee title for the videogames industry, backed by tens of millions of dollars, expected to reach millions of people and make many, many millions of dollars in profit.

Yet it's doing something so ignorant and offensive it'd get any film or book laughed at out of sheer pity by any film producer or book publisher out there.

It is NOT okay to promote forgein mercenary action in Africa, something that is going on RIGHT now and killing thousands of people and future generations, as thoughtless entertainment, let alone making MILLIONS of dollars out of it.

Still, the overwhelming majority of video gamers are so ASTOUNDINGLY poorly read (I seriously reckon the utterly pedestrian World War Z is the only book about 95% of gamers own), it's no wonder that nobody's decided to give a moments thought to how careless Ubisoft are being in putting out a game like this.

I agree. This is disgusting. He calls africa "a land" at some point. It's a continent. retards

The worst thing is, it looks like a really good game gameplay-wise. Too bad it is made by retarded idiots without any clue about the political implications of their disgusting "take" on Africa.

I think you guys are reading too much into this trailer. To my eyes, this trailer is simply not representative of the final game.

Its like despite the best efforts of the devs to treat the subject matter in a mature fashion, some marketing exec somewhere has decided that they also need to sell the game to gears of War fans, and so a trailer has been stitched together that shows "you can be evil if you want 'cos its all about choice".

See above my point about suggesting it is the voice of the villain we are hearing. That is crucial in all of this I think.

"I agree. This is disgusting. He calls africa "a land" at some point. It's a continent. retards"

Oh puleeez.

http://dictionary.reference.com/browse/l...

In fact, if you put land into a thesaurus you get continent as one fo the suggested alternatives. At least inform yourself before you fly off the handle.

If I thought you were right about the way the game is portraying Africa I would completely agree with you. But I think in this case you are getting all angry in advance of gathering all the facts (case of land above in point).

If it turns out that FC2 IS in fact being a bit shit when it comes to the current situation in Africa then I'll happily pelt them with rocks too, but lets base it on the facts eh?

Get a grip!
It's a fucking game and there's much worse out there. No one is saying that mercenaries killing people and the local gang wars going on by tinpot dictators is a good thing, but not making a game about it isn't gonna stop it. NOTHING IS.

Africa is a poor country on the whole and unfortunately is more of a military dictatorship in most countries within it, where most have no rights and the ones who speak their minds are quickly silenced but despite the evil and bullying and genocide occuring, us westerners do not step in and 'sort them out' as we've tried in Afghanistan and Iraq - becuase it's not seen as terrorism - or more to the point there's no oil.

It's a game, stop being cocks and just play it or stop spouting bullshit about morals and stuff when most of you would probably not even stop and give a homeless guy in your own city a few quid for a sandwich...

Ridiculous, hypocrit bullshit guys. Just go live in Africa and right all moral wrongs.
I'll be home playing Far Cry 2 on my great PC, not losing one second of my time taking it for anything else than what it is: a great, forward-thinking video game, set against the brilliant background of a romanticized re-creation of Africa, both hyper-condensed and larger than life.

It's not really 'larger than life' though. Read something like Blood River by Tim Butcher to learn about how truly fucked up parts of Africa are to this day.

Also, nobody's mad at anyone for playing it, just at Ubisoft, a multi-million dollar international coorperation with shareholders all over the world giving so VERY little thought to what releasing a game like Far Cry 2 means and says to people.

"It's really cool all the ways Africa is tearing itself apart and the way people kill each other. Sooo cool, dude. Yeah, man, headshots and burning villages and blowing up all their water pipes! BOOM! Dude. So cool in fact, that we're making a big wicked game out of it, with all these brill graphics and everyone dying in cool ways! Also, you're white as well, which is cool! Yeah man!"

If it was about something more than that, say like the movie Blood Diamond maybe, there'd be something interesting to talk about. But it's not. Like the new Rambo film, it's just an ultra-flashy presentation of some laughably outdated views on the world. Views of the world that come directly from people having fuck all interests in their lives apart from video games and HD-DVDs of films that come almost exclusively in trilogies.

@elCroux: You do have a point, several ones to be true, and I agree that using the misery of that continent to make a game and profit out of it might sound cruel at first thought, but maybe it's the only medium that'll get a message across. The classic media, TV/print, have failed and are still failing to make people aware of the situation. I'm sure this game will reach more, especially young people and some of them might ask questions, investigate and realise what's happening in Africa and do something about it.

Also, you guys did hear about the "capture the diamond" multiplayer-mode? Maybe they should've thrown in a "catch the slave" mode as well, while they're at it.

@elCroux: get a grip, it's just a blown up trailer for a game you haven't even tried yourself I bet. I don't even want to know what your educated opinion is about an equally mercenaries heavy game such as Jagged Alliance 2 for example. From what I've read about FC2's content it seems that Ubisoft doesn't glorify the mercenary life at all, on the contrary even.

What a 'Bring it on' at the end of a trailer can lead to...
