Published 30 May, 2008 Duration 1:44

Ubisoft's safari sequel to Far Cry is put through its paces on 360 and PS3, not to highlight any differences, but to illustrate its equal wonderfulness on both machines.

    I'm impressed that they've set an FPS in such a lovely exotic environment and STILL managed to use four hundred and fifty two different shades of brown. Pack it in will ya guys?!

    are there monsters in this one?

    You can't criticise Crytek for using browns. If there's one developer that has tried in the past to stay away from browns, it's definitely Crytek. Look at Crysis - about eleventy billion shades of green in that game :D

    EDIT: hits self, realises Crytek has nothing to do with the sequel - OK, Ubisoft has phailed.

    I absolutely loved Far Cry on the PC (but never finished it), despite not being a big fan of the FPS genre. I think this may be one of the few games in that genre that I'll actually buy. Unless there's something more tempting out at that time.

    Grr, bloody EG comment system.

    360 looks a little smoother, but PS3 seems to have a lot more geometry for debris and explosions. Seems they worked out that the SPU's can help with physics at last.
  • FireMonkey #13 4 years ago

    @septimus
    I disagree that the PS3 has more geometry for debris. It's just down to what was being blown up. Did you see the amound of debris from the final explosion?
  • peterfll #14 4 years ago

    They looked pretty similar to my eye and if this is achieved it's another example of how an engine can port well to both platofrms. A shame so many other 3rd parties aren't taking note.

    ps I'm hoping for a slighter higher frame rate though?
  • septimus #15 4 years ago

    @FireMonkey: Yeah I did, and get what you are saying. But have a look at a couple of fire fights earlier on in the PS3 shots (without stuff being blown up) and there seems to be more incidental detail in the scenes. Not saying 360 looks bad at all, looks nicer from the first and final shots. But I still hope they are using an SPU to do physics instead of pushing everything through the core.

    With this clips using different points of game, we doesnt really have a fair comparasion points as to if more geometry is in PS3 version than in the X360. In the past the reversal was true (Dirt one example) but fully agree that we would want PS3 version to properly use the SPU and not left to the core.

    man now I do not have to buy a new pc.

    @AphoticCosmos

    Hehe easy mistake to make. That was my point though, one of the things that made Far Cry / Crysis so impressive was their use of beautiful / colourful locations. Look at Halo too - the crap levels are the space station/spaceship/inner sanctum levels. At the moment, so many FPS games are the typical dark, moody, sci-fi/urban sets where everything looks grey, drab and miserable. The Quake, Doom and Unreal games are all notably bad for this, but most have the same issues.

    Wow, Ps3 framerate is really bad compared to Xbox 360. Come on Ubi, use your heads, use SPU's, it's been almost two years. If other devs can do it then either fire your programmers and get half decent ones?

    Silly Numpties, if this turns out to have V-sync off, framerate issues, etc *cough vegas2* then I'm steering clear of it. Bring on Resistence 2! From a dev who knows how to code!

    those graphics look incredible

    what made me laugh.. 'Fully destructible environment'

    we all know telegraph poles can withstand a rocket launcher attack :)
    an id like to know where he gets his bags from.. holding all those guns at one *giggle*

    no but seriously, looks lovely :)
  • PapaSmurf630 #24 4 years ago

    Doesn't look anywhere near as good as Crysis though. Destructible environments?? The explosions look terrible!

    Not to mention the gun sounds and point-of-view..
  • SmartMonkey #25 4 years ago

    Almost as good looking as Crysis.... but not quite there yet.
