Exclusive: WipEout HD - Moa Therma

Published 31 March, 2008 Duration 3:04

WipEout is back in glorious High definition, or at least will be very soon. It's still got thumping techno, insanely fast top speeds, achingly cool Japanese iconography everywhere and that slightly annoying woman who announces the weapon power ups, except they're all even more lovely and crisp.

Maybe they're using the sixaxis tilt for movement???

I'm so looking forward to this - I loved the first one on the PS1 back in '95, though I don't actually believe I've played any of the later ones (only recently turned to console gaming again).

The hi-def trailer from the PSN store looks stunning.

    Want. Want. Want.

The tunes' a remix of Kraftwerks' "Aero Dynamik" by the way.
  • light&shadow #9 4 years ago

Have you noticed how the music gets also affected by the reverb when entering tunels, as if you where listening to the tune inside you ship. Nice touch.
  • AphoticCosmos #10 4 years ago

    Pumping tunes.

Y'know - this might actually be enough to make me buy a PS3. Loved the original :)

it looks so slow compared to burnout revenge. Need more seed with minimum reaction time
  • peterfll #12 4 years ago

What is it with the bird announcer?

    "ROCKETS! MMMINES!"

She sounds like one of those lift voices "PARKING LEVEL ONE!".
  • stoopidgreg #13 4 years ago

    "rockets!"
    "mines!"
    "bombs!"
    "missiles!"

wow, that got irritating after 30 seconds. good luck playing the whole game without scratching your ears off.
  • symmetry #14 4 years ago

Hmmm, that looked a lot shitter than I thought it would :(
  • Triggerhappytel #15 4 years ago

Looks great, but I've realised I lost interest in the last games because I found them too fucking hard at anything above the slowest speed. This looks similarly frustrating. I probably won't invest.

If it's the graphics you're referring to, watch the HD trailer from the PSN store instead. A low resolution, heavily compressed Flash video doesn't really do this game (or any other game for that matter) justice.

This is a common criticism with Wipeout games, but playing on the fastest classes (traditionally) not only brings the speed up and reaction time down, it forces a different and more challenging racing line.

Graphics and music aside, this looks really boring,.
  • goon-uk #19 4 years ago

Graphics and music aside? You might as well say apart from the whole game this looks boring.....

So many uninformed post's....This will be a massive success in europe/UK. Not sure about the US.
  • benuaq #20 4 years ago

God damn that woman's voice is annoying.

Please god will someone change that before it's released.

I'm talking about gameplay you moron.

It's looks far to clinical in it's implementation. Granted this is just a taster of whats to come. Put my hopes aren't high.

"looks nice! shame the person playing doesn't seem to be able to steer ;)"

well he probably used the motion sensing control that is why he is unable to steer :D
  • RustyBullet #23 4 years ago

Sorry but that looks crap. The tune is under powerd as well. The soundtrack on the original WipeOut was awesome but that is all a bit bland. Hope Sony are not hopeing for too much. Think i will give this a miss, pitty i was looking forward to it. Still the only good game on PS3 is Drake and that was too short lived. Come on give me something to play on my PS3.

"I'm talking about gameplay you moron. "

Wipe out was always about the soundtrack and visuals. The gameplay was a simple affair and still is but if it isn't broke why fix it?

Fast racing, Power ups and weapons. Really what more can they do with a HD update?

Wipeout 3 was great, but this really looks uninspired.

That race track is bland and it is really missing The Designers Republic visual touches.
  • Bangaioh #29 4 years ago

What? Wipeout again?! After TDR Wipeout stopped making sense to me...
  • PuppyFiddler #30 4 years ago

They better goddamn change that annoucer woman..make her sound sexy for crying out loud!

Also the starting announcer sounds like the janitor was brought in to do it while flicking through some uninteresting magasine.

    Looks AWESOME!

I loved the original (it was the only wipeout I really enjoyed) and this looks like it will top it!
  • Joril #32 4 years ago

Is it me, or does the top-speed look allot slower than the original? He didn't seem to be going all that neck-breakingly fast.
    It looks rather nice though.
  • Widge #33 4 years ago

Yeah I also got the PSN trailer... looked really nice.
The most intriguing thing is that this isn't a full proper PS3 Wipeout, more of a nice PSN stop gap.

I checked the tracklisting out and it seems pretty ace too. A bit of AFX in there, some minimal stuff from Booka Shade etc.
  • 3william56 #34 4 years ago

Joril - all WipEout games start slow - I'd guess that's Rapier class. Presumably there's a Phantom mode that will peel your eyelids back like the others in the series.

Lovely to see proper boost pads - they were too weak and not important enough in recent versions.

Though it did look like the steering got worse as the lap went on. Please god tell me they haven't done the appalling "damage modelling" from Fusion. OFF! OFF!
  • Tehren #35 4 years ago

Yep, the voice work sucks. Let's hope it's just in the interim and they'll get some good ones for the real thing. Totally undermines the air of cool. Bet it's the receptionist.
