Exclusive: Tomb Raider Underworld - Story

Published 5 September, 2008 Duration 2:13

With mythology and legend now such a common part of the public consciousness, recycling the stories of Gods and men which populate them can start to get a little creaky. In order to keep Underworld fresh, the team were tasked with making the oldest stories sound new and exciting.

Toby Gard - "Cinematics director"? Given up the 'making games' bit then...

Norse fucking mythology AGAIN. I'm beginning to think other mythologies don't exist at all, and were just made up to give people a bit of variety instead of believing in bloody Odin.

No mention of Legend > Underworld events/relation, in the "Story" trailer. That's a little disappointing. The game features some lush environments, though, which is always appealing.

I don't understand why so many people are fascinated with Norse mythology. Personally, I prefer Egyptian mythology. Mesopotamian mythology is quite interesting as well, I find.

Umm, this isn't exclusive; it's on Gametrailers as well (unless I'm missing something).

Quite the backlash against Norse mythology here. Well I can understand it given the diluted and bloodless versions that usually crop up in multimedia and films. Being norwegian I probably have a more readily available source of texts to delve into. And if you do, you will find it stark, grim, and gripping for the most part.

Some starters there. Now if this is a good fit for Tomb Raider: Underworld is a different question altogether..

I'm glad to see Toby Gard is still onboard. Afterall, Lara was his brainchild. I'm somewhat miffed as to why his role in the development isn't more significant.

Hah(!), love the 'from bellybutton down' thumbnail!

"I need Thor's belt to get his hammer, and I need his hammer to kill a god."

Someone got paid to write that.

What, Wikipedia? (I'm joking, of course)

And if you do, you will find it stark, grim, and gripping for the most part.
Don't you think that's exactly the reason Norse mythology attracts a lot of attention from game developers, film producers and (comic) book writers? That and because it's always easier to pick a 'stark, grim and gripping' universe (and since it belongs to a mythology, you're not stealing anyone's idea, either) than create your own.

Next week - Tomb Raider: Orbital, and the week after that Tomb Raider: KLF

Lord I hate these expensive looking "behind the scenes" features. Games are not movies.
  • makeamazing #14 4 years ago

Cant say I'm impressed with this so far... nothing really that impressive has been show...not that I've ever been a fan of these types of games, except for the Indi game on Pc along time ago and recently uncharted. To be honest I would rather see a new uncharted than this game.

On the contrary to the majority of these posts, I'm rather looking forward to this. It looks like CD have been able to maintain the graphical and gameplay appeal from early media and will possibly continue onward from Legends plot...yep, gotta have this game.
  • suicida #16 4 years ago

This game is top of my most-wanted list. Want it now!
  • Sneerk #17 4 years ago

I too am looking forward to this game. But that whole killing a god thing. A bit too much, a bit too much..
  • gareth886 #18 4 years ago

I can't wait for this game also. I like the whole killing a god thing. Lets face it, non of the Tomb Raider storylines have been that believable. I think thats what makes them so good.
  • alimokrane #19 4 years ago

Really cant wait for this. Crystal Dynamics really seem to be working hard to restore the tomb raider franchise to its former glory. It just made waiting for another tomb raider a very exciting experience.

The story is a continuation of the Legend story that ties into the original Tomb Raider. it's all about the Avalon myth and the god referred to is obvisouly you know who.
  • Razorus #20 4 years ago

What the hell is wrong with Lara? Why does she want to kill a God? That's just rude.
  • DB2k #21 4 years ago

You don't understand how other people have an opinion different to yours? wow.
  • ChthonicEcho #22 4 years ago

I would try to point out that I was actually confused why so many people are attracted to this particular mythology, but I don't like wasting my time on idiots.

Oh, balls, I just did. Tricked by an idiot, guess that makes me worse than one.
  • loopholezero #23 4 years ago

this would look a bit better if her face wouldn't be laminated.
  • DB2k #24 4 years ago

maybe you'll think about what you write next time, instead of portraying yourself as that which you have tried to class everyone else as. Idiot.
  • illusiondance #25 4 years ago

waoh - calm down kids, it doesnt matter, its all good.
Anyway, of all the 7 or so Tombraiders can anyone put the titles in order of quality, i fancy trying it again since i havent properly played the Croft since the original saturn one.
