Well now. Let's just take a step back and a deep breath before we say anything. And relax. C'mon. You can do it too, if you try.

Cheeky! But I rather play the 10/10 game :)

Actually, scrap that, we really need more people to be brave enough and try compete with GTA. Specially after so many failed attempts that ended up going nowhere (Trucrime, Getaway, Godfather ...). So, good luck to them!

"Exclusive: Saints Row 2 - Would you rather?"

    Play GTA?

    ;)
  • OllyJ #3 4 years ago

    that trailer was brilliant.
  • coojam #4 4 years ago

Cute. But really, the gameplay they've just shown you CAN do in Saints Row 2 (like beating people up, blowing shit up etc.) you can already do in GTA and have been able to for 10 years. Rather than cloning and adding, why not try and be a bit clever about it?

Besides, I'm assuming this is American, so they never really "got" the humour side anyway did they (hence the voice over that sounds like CliffyB got a bit too close to the script).
  • bad09 #5 4 years ago

    +1, but funny ad!
  • mattigan #6 4 years ago

Good add, if that style of humour runs through the game then I think it's well worth a look
  • Dabs #7 4 years ago

Where'd you get the inspiration for Saints Row, guys?

Very cheeky of them to rip on GTA IV, since you just know it's going to be a load of wannabe arse by comparison.
  • arcanis22 #8 4 years ago

That trailer was absolutely fantastic and I love that they have the balls to just come right out and say "What we're trying to do is make a game that is GTA but better". But to be honest I just can't see it working, the first game was good but not GTA good and had some SERIOUS flaws (not that san andreas didn't mind). I have a feeling this is going to be brilliant fun but not have the kind of depth and longevity that GTA always manages to achieve.

To sum up: I'm thinking one to rent.
  • dadrester #9 4 years ago

Best GTA clone so far (by a country mile) is Bully. It just worked a treat. Good trailer though. It raised my interest in the game from zero to... um... well I'll wait for the reviews.
  • Quint2020 #10 4 years ago

Looks like it's got in it all of the fun ridiculous things they took out of GTA.....
  • tesco #11 4 years ago

I'll buy this and i'm sure i'll enjoy it like I enjoyed the last one. Do I care that its a game just like GTA? no. In the same way I play COD4 and CS or World in conflict and C&C.
Different takes on the same enjoyable genre.
Why limit the fun you have by refusing to play a game that feels the same as one you already enjoy?
  • bad09 #12 4 years ago

"Besides, I'm assuming this is American, so they never really "got" the humour side anyway did they"

That kind of sums up SR for me. Yeah it's pretty much the same game as GTA but without the Rockstar humour a lot is missing.
  • OllyJ #13 4 years ago

I never thought I'd say this but I ahven't touched GTAIV for about 2-3 weeks, whereas Saints Row I didn't play anything else till it was finished.

I can't put my finger on it put GTA isn't calling me back for more.
  • andromeda #14 4 years ago

    niko, any day.
GTA has a soul. This doesnt , and never will.
  • Machiavel #15 4 years ago

Would you rather... go back to a graphics engine that's several years behind a certain 10/10 current game?
  • aidey6 #16 4 years ago

hmm, like the look of that.....
  • tesco #17 4 years ago

Lets be honest though (and I bum GTA as much as the next guy) having to take people out to play pool or play darts or whatever to keep them happy with you and give you unlocks was a really bad idea on Rockstars part.
If I want to invest time hanging out with friends i'll do it in real life. When I play a game like GTA I would rather blow things up, steal cars, have shootouts in the streets and screw hookers for health. The taking people out could have just as easily been included but with no negative consequences.
  • JonFE #18 4 years ago

    Tongue in cheek trailer :)
  • andromeda #19 4 years ago

TV in GTAIV is better than real tv. I'd happily swap channel 4 and 5 for Weazel and CNT. Inspired viewing :)
  • miiiguel #20 4 years ago

tesco, you don't need to keep going out with them. When you reach 100% (or the desired percentage), every time they phone say yes, then call back (immediatly if you want) cancelling. No penalty.

Sain't Row is very good (the 1st one at least), but I admit I can't measure the "soulness" or whatever counts this day to bash a game one hasn't played.

I can't believe people are saying this is funny. Our plummet down to the moronic levels of US humour and IQ deficient entertainment is complete. The US wouldn't know humour even if it wore a big red nose and slapped them in the face with a custard pie. This is so unfunny, unclever and a seriously poor marketing decision. If you're gonna try to go up against something like GTA at least have some substance to back up your claims. This just looks terribly desperate. Good luck to 'em but defintiely sack the marketing team.
  • miiiguel #22 4 years ago

UW: you definetly didn't play the 1st one, the one that sold +1 million copies and was praised by the critic. Houser also an American citizen now, because he choose to.
Prejudice for the sake of it ?

vid would work if game was good but its not :/
  • UltimateWarrior #24 4 years ago

I was actually commenting solely on this trailer. I really don't care what either game sold in the past, present or future. This trailer simply doesn't do what a good trailer should for me. I'm not comparing it to anything else. I'm simply saying the humour is seriously poor for anyone over the age of 10 and the intention to challenge GTA just doesn't come off. I'm not even a GTA fan. I simply feel this trailer is way off the mark when it comes to decent marketing. But then again maybe I'm putting too much faith in the intelligence of the kind of people who'll watch this.
  • Baronen #25 4 years ago

Yeah, it really says something when the humour of a fucking GTA game puts the humor in your game to shame, doesn't it?
  • Moz #26 4 years ago

Looks a million times better then the first SR, if the extra activities play as well as the trailer suggests then we could have a GTA beater at last. But if it turns into just a load more "yo yo me homey" shit like the first then i'll pass
  • DUFFMAN5 #27 4 years ago

This one is a no brainer. I will own on day of realease. Bring on the row.

Good ad (why do people keep saying 'add'?) and I agree that most of the 'extras' within GTA are boring (taking people out to clubs etc, the TV blah) but the graphics look absolutely 1999.

I couldnt play something that looked so second-rate I'm afraid (frame rate looked pretty low too, not to say GTA's isnt at times).

Same font as GTA as well? C'mon thats too much :D

I like their intentions, to put more things that people actually want in the game (I am stunned you cannot BASE Jump in GTAIV!) but its technologically way behind its rival if that trailer is anything to go by.

    7/10 max
  • Monkey_Puncher #29 4 years ago

The script and humour will never be as good as GTA, but this game still looks like a hell of a lot of fun. With the addition of full online story co-op this is a definite purchase for me!
  • miiiguel #30 4 years ago

without any judgement, because I really dont have any pretension to think I'm better than anyone, but these forums (disregarding exceptions) are flooded with ppl who actualy think they are "smarter".
  • patchbox360 #31 4 years ago

'would you rather watch tv within the game that your playing on your tv' hahahahahahahah genius

p.s. believing a 10/10 is actual is like believing the white bearded man to the left of the screen is god haha
  • NthSimulachum #32 4 years ago

    I quite liked the bowling....

But the cars handled too much like real cars. And the camera was in a silly position. Not like the heady arcadey days of Vice City...

Apart from that, GTA4 is excellent. And Niko rocks.
  • bigbadbeasty #33 4 years ago

Really looking forward to SR2. I thought the 1st was great fun, and I think the 'elitist' GTA fanboys on here should just try it. It isn't GTA, but it is far more fun (like Crackdown). Rockstar will not give you anything for praising them- There is plenty of room for more games of this type.
  • ps3_2310 #34 4 years ago

    Looks like a PS2 game.

And i dont like if. How can you take the piss out of the game thats gave you the engine to do your game. Nah GTA is 1 million times better than Saints row.

    Not for me
  • miiiguel #35 4 years ago

    I like GTA and I like Saint's Row. I don't "piss" neither.

On the other hand, on "who-gives-a-shit news", I'm at 94.25% in GTA4! (those pigeons took a while, but they're all dead now! 114 hours later...)

    lmao
    (L) the trailer
not sure ill love the game as much tho xD
  • Machetazo #37 4 years ago

Yeah, at this point, I definitely would rather play Saint's Row 2, as it looks like a lot more FUN. Without all the high-maintenance bs.

  • tinners #38 4 years ago

So they use GTA "like" humor to take the piss out of GTA, which is far better in every department....jokes on you.
  • naffers #39 4 years ago

good ad, il try it, but lets be honest gta is totally awsome! cant think this will top it
  • Crovax20 #40 4 years ago

I thought it was fun to watch, didn't make me laugh, but it wasn't annoying either.

I say its a good trailer, and I will probably pick up saints row 2. I played the first one and I liked it.

There is plenty of room in the market besides GTA
  • kangarootoo #41 4 years ago

Saints Row had a habit of, whilst not being as ambitious as GTA, getting stuff right tha6t GTA should have fixed ages ago. And tbh, there are quite a few things mentioned in that trailer that you can't do in GTA. Whether it will be better overall, who can say. I think they will actually turn out to be reasonably different games. SR2 does seem to have its focus quite firmly set on fun though, which can't be bad.
  • jachap #42 4 years ago

Saints Row 2 - Would you rather just play Crackdown again, instead?
  • skateblizz #43 4 years ago

its tryin to show you things that u can do in saints row that u cant in gta, but to be honest they all look pretty shit!
poor graphics aswell, dont think its a gta4 beater
  • tonynibbles #44 4 years ago

    hahaha

    Fantastic ad!
  • stoopidgreg #45 4 years ago

oh dear... i see what you did there....
  • Super_Zee #46 4 years ago

  • CHAOS_BROON #47 4 years ago

i thought gta4 was shit, it left out so many fun activities and turned it too serious imo. the only thing that makes it better is the storyline and the graphics, it has no real gta fun in it at all, what happened to rc cars, miniguns, chainsaws, jetpacks, and fucking jumbo jets and fighter jets. it's just stripped bare of all the brilliantly fun stuff from gta sa and bunged in a new shiny load of graphics and a better story. this looks content wise alot more ...FUN to be honest.
  • cyber_nicco #48 4 years ago

Funny. I've just got around to playing Saint's Row the other day, and am enjoying it quite a bit.

    I look forward to this.
  • kangarootoo #49 4 years ago

    @CHAOS_BROON

I have to agree. I'd forgotten actually about some of the cool stuff that San Andreas had. The jetpack was fun, skydiving was ace, and the VTOL jet was sunlime. To be honest, the helicopter in SA was easier to fly too, and by easier, I mean more fun.

    @mem

Dude, if everybody sued whenever someone released a game a bit like theirs we will all be buried in lawsuits. As some wise person once said "there is nothing new under the sun". Oh, and turn off your caps-lock key.
  • AHiFi #50 4 years ago

MEM- YES I AM IN C0MPL33T AGREEMENT THAT WE SHOULD ALL LOVE GTA IV

...c'mon man, Saints Row is aiming for something completely different. They're just having a laugh with this. To be honest, a lot of the time I was driving around in GTA IV and found myself comparing much of it to Saints Row.
  • MiY4MOTO #51 4 years ago

Loved the trailer. Cheeky, but to the point.

... and to be honest I really enjoyed Saints Row. I avoided it for ages and picked it up cheap in a bargain bin, and I couldn't put it down. Yes it had glitches, but it was bloody good fun.

GTA4 on the other hand.... I loved it for a while, but God it got dull fast. The story was excellent but once you got past the first half a dozen hours for me it became a real chore. I finished the story, in a couple of days and I've not put the disc in my machine since.

I'll take Crackdown over GTAIV any day.
  • Bangaioh #52 4 years ago

bollocks if you ask me... i'll take GTA all the way, thank you.
  • the_dudefather #53 4 years ago

Looks like the developers have BALLS OF STEEL

its good that the various niches of sandbox games are being filled up, GTA has solid gameplay and rockstar writing, Crackdown has the the giant explosions and superhuman powers, mercenaries 2 has the large un-urban environments and military angle, Godfather on the wii had the amazing fist fighting and strangling controls and now saints row 2 has come along and filled in the madness hole left behind when GTA decided that driving your in game friends to an in game restaurant was more fun than jetpacks and fighter planes.

this won't make a dent in Rockstar's throne, but it should still be fun.
  • Dark_Era #54 4 years ago

you know what i ain't gonna hate on them, good trailer, and they got guts too, lol, although u wouldn't catch me buying the game when it comes out
  • PearOfAnguish #55 4 years ago

Christ, some people on here are really lacking in a sense of humour. It's a funny ad that's gently mocking Rockstar, they're not saying GTA4 is shit. You are allowed to own and play both games, the Rockstar police won't come round and crack your kneecaps.
  • goon-uk #56 4 years ago

What makes games like GTA the games they are is the amount of polish and time taken to iron out everything. Make sure it works and in turn create a very solid game. Saints Row might offer you the ability to do some daft idea they threw around at the table one day, but unlike GTA they won't have spent years making sure it all worked. It will have a tacked on un-finished feel.

Mafia 2 is the one to watch out for.
  • caligari #57 4 years ago

  • guernican #58 4 years ago

"You are allowed to own and play both games,"

Er... I'm guessing that's what they're counting on.
  • PearOfAnguish #59 4 years ago

"Er... I'm guessing that's what they're counting on."

    Really, ya think?
  • muscleblade #60 4 years ago

SR2 is not going to be a better game than GTAIV in terms of quality and production values. Im pretty sure it will be more entertaining though with coop and all. Isnt that what its all about anyway.
  • brinlarden #61 4 years ago

but wheres the fun in not having bowling?
  • wewillselfdestruct #62 4 years ago

I guess we'll be able to answer all those questions and more when we compare sales figures later this year.
  • Mr_Brown #63 4 years ago

Fantastic trailer. I think I will get this. The first was fantastic. Don't see everyones problem, saints row and crackdown proved there is room in this genre for competition. Saints Row offers similar things to GTA, but more focused on crazy fun than anything else.
  • el_pollo_diablo #64 4 years ago

Nice trailer. despite the fact that the graphics looked pretty PS2 era.
  • septimus #65 4 years ago

Well you won't actually be doing any of that shit in Saints Row because it would have crashed, stuttered or your character dropped though the clipping before any of that happens.
  • itsfuzzy #66 4 years ago

Cheeky. Maybe the only way to get attention for the game. The 1st one was hardly ground breaking or fun enough to get people coming back for more. . .
  • Ryze #67 4 years ago

Nice trailer. This makes me at least want to try the game to see how far short of IV it falls.
  • Ryze #68 4 years ago

    @CHAOS_BROON

I reckon R* have taken out loads of the fun stuff from IV so they can reintroduce it all again in the sequels!

It'll be nice to see it happen.
  • IamWeasel #69 4 years ago

im with OllyJ, on this one, GTAIV just didnt pull me in, i just got the third island and then i didnt have the will to play it anymore. where as when i was playing saints row i was hooked and loved it, i was very dissapointed with GTAIV thought it would be great but just wasnt :(
  • The_Inquisitor #70 4 years ago

They're going to be compared to GTA everytime they're mentioned in every conversation. They may as well make fun of it, after all, it's not their fault GTA is the king of the crop.

This looks good though, I look forward to it.
  • Amon_Amarth #71 4 years ago

GTA 4 my review 6/10. Why. because they took out all the stuff from previous games and added street names, cabs and more usseles stuff. No property, no power building. They should re-develop san andreas for PS3/360
  • sadisticon #72 4 years ago

    tesco:
You strike me as being a bit too brainy for this forum; why don't you go out and swallow a bottle of gin before posting again - intellect and rationale are anathema in a gaming forum.
    No, really, I like you.
And I like GTA IV and Saints Row and Crackdown (immensely actually - for all the right reasons) and that abysmal True Crime: NYC and Driver: Parallel Lines (ok there I'm kidding - a little). The point is I like any open world sandbox game you throw at me - my library is a catalogue of the best and worst because I like the illusion of freedom. Saints Row doesn't have to outperform GTA in order to get my 60 bucks cause, shucks, they had me at hello (and the naked guy).
