I'm sure the game is very good, but the idea of a time rewind element does irk a little. Seems a bit gimmicky; can't they just concentrate on making a great driving game?

not so much a gimmick as the fashion. Every producer and their mum has been doing it in semi-sims for the last 8 years.
Personally i think its outlasted its welcome as well but i suppose there are the older gamership (new word?) who are obsessed enough with old "classics" that they have to chuck it into these titles.
besides the designers want to prove their credentials with this sort of unbriddled nostalgia.

Looks nice though....works well. Good damage modelling too.

I tried this feature in the demo and it didn't seem to work so well. It usually doesn't rewind far enough back, so all you end up doing is crashing in a slightly different way.

Hopefully this will be fixed in the final version, but I'll buy it anyway as the driving, graphics and sound pissed all over Gran Turismo 5 Prologue.

It can be a bit useless if you wait until the impact actually happens, then the replay will mostly be you spinning out and sliding across the gravel trap. It's best to hit the button as soon as you realize that you've fucked up.

That said, I was getting a good 10 seconds of flashback time on the San Fran race in the demo.

This game really looks awesome, nothing more frustrating than wiping out your car at the end of a 15minute race. i hate wireless pads purely for the reason they fly SOO well!!
