Exclusive: First play of new 360 controller

6 (4 ratings)

Loosening the D-pad might not be the most revolutionary advance in controller technology, but it's something which 360 owners have been after for a while now. The big question is: how much difference does it actually make?

looks exactly the same as the current one....not a big fan of the dpad floating around it's block either...would prefer something even stiffer and more fixed myself...but hardly use the dpad anyway so not too bovvered

Me likes the colour for sure... very nioe... does it have a rubber coated finish to it or just the standard plastic? That would be real nice...

Ok I'm trying to figure out the purpose of this new D-Pad. It certainly will not provide finer control with any pre-existing games (they will simply be unaware of the extra directions the pad provides).

Unless he was playing a new version of PES that was written with code to handle the extra digital inputs. The game itself wouldn't even know the pad was capable of more than left, right, up and down.

It's likely that this pad will be bundled or sold as an optional bundle with streetfighter or Pes 09. It's actually going to do absolutely nothing for any other game without a patch.

Has anyone figured out yet if the limited release of it is just the color or is in fact the technology

Isn't the D-pad almost becoming a third joystick? I'd be all in favour of that...

@Tiste

We got info (at work) saying it was now a 32 direction D-Pad. As the D-Pad is digital, you'd have to program a game to recognise anything extra added to it. Right now (yes I ran my input checker to make sure I wasn't just missing something) the D-Pad is purely up, down, left and right or a mix of two of those i.e up and left etc. etc. As it's digital, there is no fine control over how much left is pressed and how much right up is also pressed. They are either on or off.

really, worst color ever, there is no harmony. New D Pad is useless. Look at the SNES or PS how a good D pad should look like.

Look's more like a worn joypad to me, mine handles just like that. And besides why use the D-pad to play PES, surely the analogue stick is much better anyhow?? This is a very late April fools joke surely? I'd expect a motion controlled joypad like the Wii / PS3 than that..

If I can't pull off a fireball in SF2 with 100% accuracy then I don't want to know. Still looks like the awful d-pad design of the old bad only improved slightly. Rubbish in other words.

Video is a waste of time.

I could use an options menu to better test the new 360 pad by attempting to press down several times WITHOUT the d-pad registering left or right.

The best test would be to play SFII with the pad.

Eh, I've gotten it easier to use the analog stick for PES.

But SF defo needs a good dpad.

I'm glad that that there is room for subtle innovations rather than attempts to imitate Nintendo or throw in some retarded gimmick like flashing disco buttons. Having at least 8 points on the d-pad will help for games like Streetfighter whilst PES will now benefit from something between analog stick and d-pad :)

Horrible colour but it does the job.

Augh. It's the ergonomics/kinaesthetics of the pad which are the problem: not the number of directions it can represent!
