Exclusive: Fallout 3 - PS3/360 Comparison video

9 (3 ratings)

Bethesda's mighty post-apocalyptic epic has been submerging us all in an atom-blasted wasteland of gory head-shots and desperate scavenging for a week now, and we've got the radiation burns to prove it. Here, Richard Leadbetter's typically professional comparison magic goes to work on the 360 and PS3 versions of the game, to see which gets you more rads per second.

Agreed, the lack of anti aliasing on the PS3 version is terrible. Some of the building textures clip terribly aswell. Not good...

Hmm.. there is a noticable difference but its definitely not much to shout about, AA support on the 360 seems to be doing the job.
I'm still surprised at the image quality on PS3 games but I guess that's what you get for making another different/difficult architecture.

The PS3 one has much worse jaggies, yes, but it seems to have slightly better lighting and effects. In the first few scenes, the xbox's party balloons look like lightbulbs, the labcoat dude's closeup's shadows are too hard. And let's face it, the xbox version's anti-aliasing isn't exactly great. The "Exercise Regularly" sign in the very first frame is pretty good indication of that. And its smoothing seems overindulgent at times. The girl after the labcoat dude has an ugly smudgy yellow collar compared to the PS3 version.

That said, I'd definitely pick XBOX out of these two. The PS3 is popping and jaggling over the place.

PC ftw, tbh.

Surely it should be just about the game?
I don't care about the graphics comparison, I think this is one of the best games around, on ANY platform.

The 360 version was the lead platform, so has to be better. I just dont understand why the port version (PS3) has better lighting, better effects and slightly better textures.
Once more the 360 version was saved by the AA. The AA isn't exactly great on 360, but is better than nothing.

The 360 version clearly has better anti-aliasing and better level of detail (LOD) on distant objects (such as trees and buildings). I don't understand where people are getting the idea that the PS3 version has better textures. I have poured over all the comparison screenshots and watched the video multiple times and I could not find an instance where I thought the PS3 showed a more detailed texture. In fact, I thought the 360 version showed more detail in the textures in most places. The PS3 version's textures look more flat and washed out to me. Look at the 12th comparison shot for a clear example of what I mean. Look at the ground and rocks to see what I mean about the 360 version showing more detail in the textures. Also look at the trees on the hills in the background to see the LOD differences I am talking about. I own both consoles and I love them both. But it's painfully obvious to me that the 360 version is the superior version. The fact that the 360 version is also getting the exclusive downloadable content makes it a no-brainer for me.

we have to realise that even if God developed a game on both plat forms, they would never be the same, thats why one's called the xb360 and the other is called the PS3.

The 360 version has x4 AA. The PS3 version has none. That's why it looks smoother on 360.

Corben Dallas, the "lighting and shading" is not better on the ps3 version, you are just inventing that. The lighting is exactly the same on both versions, the only difference is the contrast and brightness settings for each version. The 360 version has more contrast and the PS3 version is brighter, but again, that can all be adjusted on your TV. I personally think the PS3 version looks too bright and slightly washed out at the settings they have it.

What I really notice is the lack of anti-aliasing and poor level of detail in the PS3 version. To see what I am talking about the LOD (level of detail) at minute 1:06 look at the destroyed buildings in the distance...the 360 version shows much more detail than the PS3 version. To see the differences in textures look at the ground and rock textures at minute 1:50, the 360 version looks somewhat sharper and more detailed. Also, notice how many more jaggies the PS3 version has throughout the whole video.

Ok i have a ps3 and not a 360, the 360 version looks better on this video but if you look at all the videos the 360 always looks better. i recently borrowed my friends 360 with fallout 3 and there was no difference, no jagged edges or anything like that. there must be something wrong with the device eurogamer use to capture the ps3 because in every video the 360 looks better and that's not the case when you have them both side by side on a monitor.

PS3 looks pants! I have both systems and whenever im gonna buy a game thats multi format i check these vids out, the jaggy edges are shocking on PS3 when you see what they can do on Killzone and Uncharted, why dont they take some care with things like this, it looks like its on PS2. Looks like im purchasing the GotY edition on xbox then!!!
