the lack of shine is nicer, looks kinda like a ps3 flattened by a comedy anvil, but prefer it to the original

Looks much better than the old model but there seem to be ventilation holes missing on the side.

@ BritishBlue1 - Hopefully the ventilation is being done differently and hopefully without adding more noisy fans (no pun intended) but now I'm at a crossroad since i was considering into buying a Ps3 -Buy the old model... or go slim?

The PS3 is going to be available for €299 in the rest of the EU, not €249, and €249 are not about £250. Where did this guy get his info from?

I'm wondering why they set it up like that, why the hidden the debug unit. I mean that's a real PS3 slim right? By now the must have a big cache of them lying arround in warehouses waiting to ship to retailers so making a lot of mock ups would be a pointless expense so surely it is. I suppose it must be because if they don't turn them on they can pack then them up and sell them as new.

@ BritishBlue1: The slim only uses only 2/3 of the power of the fat so it'll only have to disapate 2/3 of the heat so it can probably do without a few of the holes.

@ Hexagon: He got his info from the press conference it was announced at he just misspoke in the video.

It does not look a big enough difference in size, the PS2 slim was significantly smaller and thinner than the PS2, this is not slim enough! I want less for my money!

I like the old design and as such I'm going to set up a protest group - on Facebook - to save it. I just need to get that Lockerbie bomber group finished first.

I wish it still has the luxurious chrome trim of its older sibling but, you know, it really doesn't look that bad really in the flesh (so to speak). It won't win any awards, true, but it's very impressive how Sony have managed to reduce its size, still keeping the HDD internal *and* upgradeable plus retaining the internal power brick!!! :O

I'd love to see Microsoft try something similar! ;)

Sony have done very well to shrink this down. They're showing their strengths as hardware specialists.

I can't say I love the design, but the size reduction is extremely impressive.

Bodes well for them along with games like Uncharted 2 and God of War.

"luxurious chrome trim"

I can't tell if this is sarcasm or not. Chrome coloured plastic is about as luxurious as an Elizabeth Duke signet ring. Chromey bits and shiny black plastic look a bit "try hard" compared to the new one imo.

I don't much care about such things, as its stuffed into a tv cabinet and not that visible, but if I had to pick a look...

@kangarootoo - No I wasn't being sarcastic at all. I love the chrome trim of my PS3 (just as do the 360's tray actually) as it gives the console a quality finish, a bit of class and elegance, that makes it look more expensive than it is... or, rather as expensive as it was since it did cost me £425!

Unlike the cheap metal painted plastic that toys have, which tends to discolour and flake after a few months, my PS3 looks as shiny and new as the day I bought it and that was 28 months ago now. :)

My cousin has a piano black Samsung TV and the old shiny PS3 (standing on its edge) next to it looks really neat. They compliment each other well. I don't think the slim would look quite as good.

were they using the ps3(debug) to demonstrate the slim? hmmm
reminds me of when the ps3 launched and they were setting up the pods in my store. i suggested to the sony rep that we put it up to the xbox pod with same game to compare and he nearly had a baby!

It's still huge, but at least it's not the biggest console ever anymore.

I hope they have another shrink, because it's still really, really deep and won't stack properly due to hanging off the edge of my normal sized gear.

For persus-9 and others wondering why there's a test kit hidden under the Slim, its because they're generally running pre-production game code, which won't run on consumer machines.

PS3 slim looks much better... might have to consider one, and use the FAT one as a media player in the front room.
