I especially like the Mii Maker's attempt at a Minkley face. When I tried it, it made me look like Peter Griffin! For those that don't know me, I don't look like Peter Griffin (I have been compared to Harry Potter and a hairy, uglier Heston Blumenthal).
Thankfully it can be manually tweaked too, to get it just right.

Wait for the inevitable hardware refresh with bigger screen......

The device materials are a given, and won't see a landfill for hopefuly a few years. Most of the manuals however will probably end up there far sooner. That's quite a few million manuals that by and large will be discarded without being read. Pointless. I personally begrudge opening a box and being given a manual the size of a small novel; a novel that only about 10% of is in my native tongue.
PDF/eBook manuals are nothing new, and are widely used. Using the in-built screen to read these manuals isn't rocket science.

While I agree that it seems that Nintendo included just a bit too much paper in that package, I would definitely not want to have an e-book only manual.
First of all, it would be a hassle to try out all the functions of the 3DS if you have to keep switching out of and into the electronic manual. Imagine tweaking some settings and having to pull up the manual 10 times to do it, instead of just running through it with a paper manual next to it.
Then of course, if you've gotten to know the system, just about the only time you'll use the manual again is if your 3DS has a problem. If it fails to boot up properly, I bet you would be glad the manual isn't an electronic one, locked into the machine where you can't read it anymore because it doesn't boot up...
Edit: watched the video again and saw I made a wrong assumption...

Ninty have already said that the 3DS is as small and technologically advanced as they can get it right now, so don't expect to see a "Lite" version anytime soon, if at all.
I wouldn't say no to an XL version mind, bigger is always better in my book.

Of course in reality the speakers and cameras are there so it would at least have to be thicker so they can fit behind the screen. Then the speakers would have to be smaller, so would sound worse. So in reality, you are talking a lot more cost or sacrifices in quality, to make it bigger.
At the end of the day once you are gaming, you won't notice the size so much. Its the same with my old DS Phat, I think the screen is small and the DS is ugly. But once I am gaming I forgot all that. I find it hard to believe people are sat gaming thinking "you know, the size of this screen is REALLY distracting".
