Fucking hell thats a lot of paper! Nintendo really don't know how to be green. Just make manuals for the country it's going to be shipped to you lazy bastards! Lol at the throwing the Mario card away though :D

Close to £200 for this guff? O_o
  • TearYouAsunder #4 1 year ago

    I like James' face.
  • DFawkes #6 1 year ago

    All looks fantastic :)

I especially like the Mii Maker's attempt at a Minkley face. When I tried it, it made me look like Peter Griffin! For those that don't know me, I don't look like Peter Griffin (I have been compared to Harry Potter and a hairy, uglier Heston Blumenthal).

Thankfully it can be manually tweaked too, to get it just right.

On second viewing that big red manual does look like the latest revision of the bible. I bet it even includes instructions in Swahili even though the console will never ship to any country that speaks the language.

Good piece of technology but I'm not prepared to pay around £200.

Its still just a gimmick sticking with my DSi XL

Does anybody know when the embargo for 3DS games is being lifted? I'm still undecided on which game to buy on launch day.

This is one of the most childish and unwieldy thing I've ever seen in the gaming industry. It is supposed to be a portable console, how on earth would you do this nonsense on the road, in a bus or in an aircraft without looking like a complete dolt and embrassing yourself? These are all silly gimicks that will grow old after one time.

This console needs good games and not this rubbish.

The amount of paper packed into that box is criminal. Even ignoring the horrible waste, you'd think any company would want to keep the weight down on unit shipping.

    Really, Nintendo - for shame.
  • dupplawt #15 1 year ago

I thought it was going to have a charger dock?
  • DirectAim #16 1 year ago

Tapping so hard with the stylus makes me wince.
  • Roland_D11 #18 1 year ago

@dupplawt It does have a charger dock, it is shown in the video :-)
  • NOSAVIOUR #19 1 year ago

    Wheres the charger dock?
  • Mithaldu #20 1 year ago

You're supposed to *touch* the screen, not stab it like a deranged maniac!
  • Floppy #21 1 year ago

Hey Nintendo. Your device (and the ones before it) have a built in screen; two in fact. Would it have been so hard to include the gargantuan European manuals in electronic eBook type format into the device's firmware to save a few trees?
  • TonyHarrison #22 1 year ago

Wow... when did this become Greengamer? A bit of paper is nothing compared to the amount of plastic crap that's used in gaming.
  • Bagpuss #23 1 year ago

Still say that top screen is too small.....

Wait for the inevitable hardware refresh with bigger screen......
  • Floppy #24 1 year ago

Wow... when did this become Greengamer?

The device materials are a given, and won't see a landfill for hopefuly a few years. Most of the manuals however will probably end up there far sooner. That's quite a few million manuals that by and large will be discarded without being read. Pointless. I personally begrudge opening a box and being given a manual the size of a small novel; a novel that only about 10% of is in my native tongue.

PDF/eBook manuals are nothing new, and are widely used. Using the in-built screen to read these manuals isn't rocket science.

    Don't give Minkley a knife

don't ever give Minkley a knife..

    @Floppy
While I agree that it seems that Nintendo included just a bit too much paper in that package, I would definitely not want to have an e-book only manual.

First of all, it would be a hassle to try out all the functions of the 3DS if you have to keep switching out of and into the electronic manual. Imagine tweaking some settings and having to pull up the manual 10 times to do it, instead of just running through it with a paper manual next to it.

Then of course, if you've gotten to know the system, just about the only time you'll use the manual again is if your 3DS has a problem. If it fails to boot up properly, I bet you would be glad the manual isn't an electronic one, locked into the machine where you can't read it anymore because it doesn't boot up... ;-)

Edit: watched the video again and saw I made a wrong assumption...

it's just to similar to my ds lite i'm affaid i'll wait for NGP instead i reckon it will have more wow factor. gonna need all the money i can get to buy one, cheers sony ;-)
  • BBIAJ #28 1 year ago

    @Bagpuss:

Ninty have already said that the 3DS is as small and technologically advanced as they can get it right now, so don't expect to see a "Lite" version anytime soon, if at all.

I wouldn't say no to an XL version mind, bigger is always better in my book.
  • penhalion #29 1 year ago

The mass of paper is simply a gazillion copies of the same four manuals in different languages. It's one of the joys of being in europe.
  • alexatkin #30 1 year ago

I agree it would be nice if the screen was bigger, especially as it feels like a lot of wasted space above and at the sides which feel like it could be taken up by a bigger screen without making the 3DS itself any larger.

Of course in reality the speakers and cameras are there so it would at least have to be thicker so they can fit behind the screen. Then the speakers would have to be smaller, so would sound worse. So in reality, you are talking a lot more cost or sacrifices in quality, to make it bigger.

At the end of the day once you are gaming, you won't notice the size so much. Its the same with my old DS Phat, I think the screen is small and the DS is ugly. But once I am gaming I forgot all that. I find it hard to believe people are sat gaming thinking "you know, the size of this screen is REALLY distracting".
