Do modern TVs (plasmas, lcds, etc), still have some form of scan line update to them? With CRTs and the way they displayed analog signals it made sense that things had to be displayed within certain timing constraints. I've just never understood why the same appears true for digital paths and tvs.

In a basic sense, I see no reason why a digital tv couldn't optionally buffer a full frame until the next full frame is delivered. Why are digital sets tied to fixed Hz update rates I guess is the main question? I could understand compatibility reasons for analogue inputs, but on a pure hdmi path...

Guess I need to go do some reading.

Oh, and nice video :). I've just started playing through this again in prep for the sequel and couldn't get over how bad the tearing was at 1080p. First play through was at release on my old plasma at 1080i, and tearing was relative occasional then.

Wish games had sync and res options, save having to mess up the XMB just to get a smoother game experience. Or alternatively, just make the games rock solid at 1080p, the true HD :)

With a one-frame or two-frame lag an LCD or HDTV could have v-sync correction built in, yes.
