I have the slight feeling (I got my Slim only yesterday), that the HDD is marginally faster, and copes better with seeks etc.

This is interesting. I'm curious as to if the drive is quicker, can't imagine that being the case just for marketability - developers would have to coap with two drive speeds and account for them witch isn't likely.
