Looks ace. Your helper sounds like he may be a bit of a penis though: "The penthouse...that's at the top of the bulding." *smack*

The screen transition when accessing computer terminals needs work. The stretchy texture effect looks broken.
  • oceanmotion #5 2 years ago

Weapon selection screen looks rubbish. Stretching the video screen doesn't look right.

    Otherwise, looks pretty awesome.

Pretty sure that, in the original, if you got mobbed by guards you were pretty much dead.

Looks like in this version your combat skills are so powerful that there is no need to sneak about. More worryingly, it also looks like this trailer is an example of a scripted event where there is no option to sneak away anyway.

I just hope this is a teaser designed to appeal to (the many) fans of Force Unleased etc, and the full game will have a bit more depth.

    Voice indeed sounds like Kitt.
Having that voice ingame must mean it's a lineair and scripted game.
Not at all like Deus Ex.

    "Get to the hangar bay!"
Sorry, I'm playing a Deus Ex game, I bloody well make my own decisions thank you.

"Pretty sure that, in the original, if you got mobbed by guards you were pretty much dead."

There was a moment in the first one where you hacked a terminal at the top of a building, and shit loads of guards came tromping up the stairs. You could survive that if you moved quickly (personally, I jumped over the edge of the building, switched on power-legs on the way down... which both promptly broke when I hit the ground, and crawled away).

There were other moments where you were up against plenty of foes, but you could handle it if you used cover and kept moving.

As for the video sequence you mentioned, I had the same concern about that cutscene, but I'm sure it is just the way it is edited. It goes from end of hacking to P in cover, so I'm sure there would be opportunity to sneak about if you kept your head down.

Quite likely the first item highlighting approach that I can agree with. I wonder if that seemingly harmless pulse weapon is what they meant when they said 'you can complete a game without firing a shot', though.

I was much more sceptic about the gameplay before seeing this trailer. At least the action department seems to be handled very well. Seems like I might end up buying this game!

was that the voice of KITT I heard?!
  • glaeken #14 2 years ago

That is looking great. Very much an RPG by the looks of it.

    /Spills drink

Looks like it's back to fiddling around with the inventory trying to get that flamethrower in.

Though remember we're only seeing one sequence of events, they could do with a trailer showing multiple versions of completing the same objective.

    Nice Vangelis style music though.

Looks great, though I'm a bit worried that the black/grey/gold environments don't get boring...
  • the_inchworm #17 2 years ago

So the trend is to neg anyone who suggests this might not have the depth of the original? It might not, and if so that would detract from its heritage. Any Deus Ex fan would be worried about that, why neg them? Conversely, it might be awesome and free-form. We don't have enough evidence here to have an informed decision either way.

looks deadly. i just wish he looked more space mariney.

I don't like the way ammo is displayed on the guns. Looks weird.

Nah, not true. On one of the later visits to Hells Kitchen you got mobbed by heaps of MJ12 guards. If you're fast and know what way they come from though, you can wipe them all out with 1 well-placed white phosphorous rocket :)

Fair points, you could run rambo in the original. Just as you could kill every guard in the Thief games if you wanted. Not really in the spirit of the game though and I always felt that was less satisfying than hacking, sneaking and generally using the environment intelligently.

That's why the tone of this trailer concerns me. Instead of jumping off the roof as a last resort, then activating your leg aug and crawling away, we now have an aug that just gives you the ability to land safely. Instead of bunching up a load of UNATCO troops (and a man in black or two) and blowing them up in style (I used LAMs btw), we press a button and activate a smart bomb. There's no way that can be as satisfying as trying out some bat-shit crazy tactic you just thought of.

In trying to give us what we remember, it seems to be removing the emergent aspect we all loved. From interviews and teasers like this, it all seems a bit like "tick box design".

I really hope I am wrong.

    @TheRealBadabing

I agree that the focus of the trailer at the end wasn't very "Deus Ex", but remember they are selling the game to a new audience and blowing stuff up is rather popular right now. Would a Thief game do so well if released today, especially if the hardest difficulty setting meant you couldn't kill anyone?

I understand that they have to sell their game, and that is cool. They can show all the blowinh up of things they want in their trailers, so long as when I play the game I have other choices available to me. As CHOICE still seems to be big in their marketing talk, I'm not too worried that the old farts like us won't be catered for as well :)

P.s. You can't design in emergent player behaviour, that is kind of the point. It is up to us to be inventive with the tools we are given, just like we were the first time around.

The script is sooo horrible and clunky! Has it been translated from another language?
