    Nice, nice, nice.

Not quite sure about this one. I love the premise and setting a whole lot, but when I see the combat I feel slightly.. sort of... unsure about the way it all moves. The same feeling I got when I saw movies of "Dead Man's Hand".

The only reservations I have are a general lack of character variety and the almost unavoidable controversy that will ensue once politicians hear about the girls.

Kangarootoo, that's been my concern. It doesn't seem to "shoot" that well. It reminds me of Deus Ex IW sadly. The idea and everything other than the shooting is spot on, the shooting just seems slow and clunky. I do hope it turns out ok though.

Well it's not a FPS per se - it is like Deus EX and Systemshock and all those games relied on stealth, planning and so forth, so I think the 'clunkyness' you described is a gameplay element. You are not playing a Special Ops member rescuing hostages in under 3 minutes.

But what I have seen in the movies so far of this, suggests that quick combat does occur. Regardless of the type of game, I like to be able to hit the things I am aiming at and a clunky aiming system is not usually condusive to that.

Now it may utterly not be an issue depending on the sorts of things you are asked to do in the game, but this recent ad looked very combat heavy to me so I feel due concern is appropriate.

They may well just be showing this game to appeal to the FPS loving crowd though. The game may not be as combat heavy. Though I'm not sure whether that's a good thing or not. :/

From a presentation they had here on the site a while ago, there are also ways to avoid combat. These big hulking metal guys basically are a kind of guard, don't mess with them or things they protect, such as the girls, and you're fine, and more, you can even use items to designate others as valid targets for them, causing them to smash those others up for you.

    Can't wait for this one.

I'm really hoping that it is a good sucessor to SS2. Best intentions are no guarantee, but I think some good people are behind it so I shall remain optimistic.
  • Xerx3s #11 6 years ago

If this is only one tenth of SS then it's with out doubt the game of 2k7.
  • lambtron #12 6 years ago

The problem with trying to make a compelling game world and story line is that you are prone to forgetting the 's' in FPS which is what, I think, Kangaratoo and Jedi are getting at.

Sadly I'm inclined to agree with them.

    I've got only one question...

    When it comes out?
  • Gurrah #14 6 years ago

    @lambtron:

I don't actually recall the devs mentioning they are developing a FPS. And as I mentioned earlier, as far as I am concerned you are just a regular inhabitant of the underwater city, not some Special Ops guy. There's shooting and there's shooting - maybe this game is not for you if you are looking for a straigthforward action shooter. Maybe the clunky weapon behaviour in the video is intentional - you are a few thousand feet below the surface of the sea, water is pouring in through cracked - supposably safe, pressure resistant - windows, electricity is not really a given neither are lights and there's some sort of mutated russian gymnist on the ceiling trying to drain some fluids out of you - I wouldn't be able to shoot straight tbh.

a nice postmodern game, disenchanted with the optimism of modernism. love it!
  • Xerx3s #16 6 years ago

You could play through SS without firing a single gun. The same applies for BS (the dev specifically mentioned this). I think that this more or less crushes any argument about this being a shooter.

It's an RPG with the possibility of using guns. The only difference with the likes of fallout is that it uses the unreal engine 3 instead of top-down.
  • Xerx3s #17 6 years ago

Well, considering that EG only does 8/10 when it comes to something that has guns in it...oh..

Voicover sounds like the chap from the Fallout intros
  • Azazel #21 6 years ago

The voiceover guy sounds like the one from that Descent 3 movie that insists on playing every time I decide to reinstall Planescape (or is it Tales of The Sword Coast?)...

    "MAKE THEM SUFFERRRR"

    lol

"Science was unstoppable, until one day science couldn't be stopped"

Let's hope the game makes more sense than that stupid fucking VO.
