Cool, Aliens: Colonial Marines looks a lot like BF3. :)
or at least a trailer for BF3 & the EG TV show. ;)
  • carlitoswagon #2 8 months ago

....you don't see them fucking each over for a god damn percentage.
  • StolenGlory #3 8 months ago

"....you don't see them fucking each over for a god damn percentage."

That's because it's not review time yet.
  • bad09 #4 8 months ago

Saw this over the weekend, looks alright but damn it looks scripted and like AvP having the same aliens attack, at the same point, in the same way everytime just killed the replay value dead.
  • marmaduke #5 8 months ago

I was waiting for some sort of twist at the end where they'd show off something genuinely new, but no.
  • SBfistfun #6 8 months ago

    Looks way overscripted.
  • andromeda #7 8 months ago

he will always be Randy Pitchfork to me :)
  • drumbaby #8 8 months ago

This is why I hated AvsP 2....too scripted.
  • MadDog18 #9 8 months ago

Noooooo the pulse rifle doesn't sound like the pulse rifle!
  • andromeda #10 8 months ago

sadly there will always be people who rate the second film over the first.

Someone make a god damn survival horror where you almost never see the alien where its all about atmosphere.

This is just another shootfest, with no horror. And a shame too, as the grfx and environments look great
  • sega #11 8 months ago

Yeah disappointed with the pulse rifle sound as well - it sounds sort of right coming from the other marines but not from the one the player is shooting. They've never really got the sound right in an Aliens game before, which is quite disappointing as it's so unique so it's kind of like getting the sound effects to a light sabre wrong for Star Wars fans.

    Turgid.

A rhino Alien? What pray-tell did the Facehugger implant to spawn that? I don't remember many Rhino's on LV-426.

And Hadleys Hope definitely would have gone up when the Atmosphere processor blew, it was only about 2km away.

And how come there are so many Aliens still around when there were only 158 people in the colony + a few marines from the Sulaco.

    NERD.

well this is just bad, im sorry, but this is not what i wanted from a full on Aliens game, yes it looks good, but wheres the acid for blood? wheres the fear of death from these aliens? at least on AvP one alien could cick a marines arse.

Plus the Pulse Rifle sounds crap when you fire, but ace when others fire. and i hate following coridoors, i wanted Aliens Colonial Marines to be like Dead Space, you need to do this this and this, which do you wanna do first.

i will stick with AvP, its better, and harder too...

While the weedy pulse rifle may be the biggest disappointment, that shotgun has got to be one of the wimpiest I've ever heard. Is making it sound like you're fighting with weapons bought from Toys 'R' Us a scare tactic to make you feel powerless?
  • shadowmind #16 8 months ago

    That was scary just watching.
  • systems #17 8 months ago

I was very excited and now I'm not. Just looks like AvP again, for all the above reasons already quoted.

    1. It's all scripted. It's not a game, it's an interactive movie. No replay value, so might as well rent it.
    2. The new Alien is stupid. What was the host? I don't want to fight things not in the Aliens film.
    3. The site was nuked to hell, but it's amazing how much is left.
    4. Who are the hosts for these extra aliens?
    5. The sound effects are shit. Don't they even have the rights from Fox to use the official sounds?
    6. The corpses should melt through the floor.
    7. That "close encounter" was cringe inducing. Awful. That marine would have had his arms ripped off by now.
    8. You can only put turrets down where the game says? Great.
    9. I see there's still no working lighting in the future.
    10. The queen walks in, ignores everyone else and goes straight for the player. Another one of those games is it?

On the plus side, it's 4 player co-op. It's definitely gone off my essentials list now after that. Less "lock and load" than "patch and price drop". It's the only way to be sure.

I don't know what standards Eurogamer uses to create and upload video, but I wish they would update. Everything looks rubbish in full screen, even 720p, and then any video on EG which you click 720p on suddenly drops to a 15fps jerkathon -- just get a YouTube channel and include a 1080p option already! Watching trailers on EG is much less than enjoyable.

    Fuckin' A!!
  • haruvister #20 8 months ago

Right. I don't want to be an Alien elitist about this, but...

In the original film, the facehugger's acid burned through two floors of a mining ship. In Aliens, Drake is splashed with acid and gets his face burnt off. Similarly, Hicks is crippled. Yet throughout this video - amidst the terrible voice-acting, atmosphere-ruining wisecracks, unnecessary new breeds, and lifeless physics - the player is continually being drenched in projectile alien blood and running through pools of it.

This should consider itself no more a part of the Alien canon than AVP.
  • Canyarion #21 8 months ago

I was really looking forward to this (seemed like a great launch game for Wii U), but now I don't know.

It had some nice moments with good atmosphere... but most of it just felt wrong. The movie wasn't like that, constant floods of Aliens...
  • madgerald Verified Studio Head of PR & Marketing, Colossal Games LTD #22 8 months ago

@Eurogamer - I have to ask this, but are SEGA OK with you putting up a video that was recorded off-screen? It looks like a pirate DVD that one of the Eurogamer team picked up from some bloke in the pub at lunchtime.
  • Lemming81 #23 8 months ago

    This...looks terrible.

AvP did it better and that's years old now.

This looks pretty dismal so far i'm afraid, crappy, wooden aliens for a start. . .
To do the franchise justice it would need to be Aliens to the production standards of Gears 3. . . at this stage this looks unlikely to punch its weight!
    how sad
  • bobolee69 #26 8 months ago

They should have stuck with the original idea, a kind of Aliens version of rainbox six with tactical squad gameplay. Now its the bast$ard child of Aliens & a call of duty corridor shooter. Oh dear.
  • eradek #27 8 months ago

God, I really wanted to like this preview, and I still do want to like the game but… this clip, and especially the guy's commentary, made it seem like this game (or at least this video) was put together by Aliens fanboys sitting around saying things like, "You know what we REALLY need in this game? X and Y and Z…" and "That was SO COOL in the movie, we GOTTA get it in this game." So well-meaning craftsmen are making a the pieces of a game without being able to create the story and tension underneath it all.
A few notes that, being an Alien fanboy, really bugged me:

    - I agree with previous posters about the acid blood aspect, how the Aliens should melt the floor, or, if that programming was too rough, at least damage the player. This raises the stakes in the firefights.

    - The first guy's death is ridiculous. "Great, now my tracker's broken!" Forget the bad voice acting and the fact that he's standing RIGHT UNDER AN OPEN VENT. They're on a mission in an unfamiliar place, and on the first bee-BEEEP he assumes it's a tracker malfunction? This despite the fact that they KNOW they are hunting aliens, because the guy at the start says something about dispatching xenos into his headset. When Hudson assumed the tracker was reading wrong in the film, it was because it was reading a SHITLOAD of aliens right next to him. You can't just copy-and-paste the "some guy thinking the tracker is wrong" moment.

    - I'm not going to bitch too much about the new alien, as it's a game and they need to fill it with some new content. Maybe the nuke from the end of Aliens mutated some of the surviving aliens or something. Plus it reminds me of the old school Aliens toys… you know, the "Mantis Alien," "Snake Alien," "Panther Alien…"

    - The alien queen. It doesn't really make sense here. In the film, the reason the queen went after Ripley was because her egg chamber and egg sac got completely owned by Ripley. Yes, the queen is a cool boss character, but there should be a reason for her to leave her egg chamber. The queen is a villain with personality, it understands vengeance, anger, etc. It is NOT just a bigger Alien Warrior wandering LV 426 (and apparently breaking down walls).

    - All that being said, this IS just 11 minutes of the game… so I've still got hope. And yeah, they REALLY need to fix the pulse rifle sound.

By the way I do love that he brings up the Aliens technical manual… own it :)

Okay that's it. Hurray for wasting time at work.
  • drivenstorm #28 8 months ago

Ho hum. It's just another dumb corridor shooter isn't it? Is there no sense that developers feel they can push things just a little bit?

I agree with everything that's been said. The placeholder for the sentry gun was just predictable and tiresome.

But how about this. Why not make a more tactical game with other skills grafted onto the shooting?

He mentions the table with the schematics. Why not make a series of real spaces that you have to suss out using that table? You actually have to learn the application (it won't be horrendously complex) and marking spaces to seal would actually send your comrades off scurrying to do those jobs or create waypoint markers for co-op pals. You end up with a set of game environments that you control and can actually explore - until the beasties start to hunt you down.

There could be peripheral tasks that make the game a more fraught experience. How well can you seal a door? What about having to actually use the tracker in a way that requires more than a button push?

How intelligent are the sentries? I heard a warning to watch the ammo count. What if careful bursts of your rifle helped keep the ammo count down? So if you sod off or miss that sentry gun actually has to work overtime.

Alien blood should be deadly. The aliens should be deadly! Instead of one character why not control different characters? When one falls you move onto someone else. Play badly and your decimated squad is truly up against it.

Watching this there seems so many ways you could involve the player using what is very rich source material. But really it just seems like a alien bugs shooter with a light coating of Aliens design.

For me a touch of old world game design, where the sort of things I've mentioned might have been considered, rather than the latter day option of creating a cinematic spectacle. And by the way those animations look a bit rough.

To add to the aliens elitist comments, the tracker dots are also the wrong colour, they should be white :(
  • Wyrm #32 8 months ago

I'm an Aliens super-fan, those pulse rifles sound ok to me :-S

The acid however, is a problem.
  • funkateer #33 8 months ago

"What do you mean 'they cut the power", they're animals!"
That classic line was delivered *really* badly.

Still interested where this goes, though. A true Aliens sequel made by Aliens fans is interesting by rule, and it's looking not bad good so far.
I just hope it's got a good plot, story, characters and lots of suspense instead of raping the "Aliens" franchise in the form of yet another corridor shooter.

I actually thought that was pretty cool. Sure there was plenty wrong with it - seems too actiony, too scripted etc. Biggest thing for me is that you can't place turrets wherever.

Still, I've not completely written it off yet.
  • Canyarion #35 8 months ago

This needs to be more like Left 4 Dead and less like AvP.

I also like @drivenstorm's idea of a more tactical approach. It could be mission based, where you clear out several parts of the complex and always come back to a base camp where you save your progress.
And it would have to be random every time. Again a bit like L4D.
  • micky1984 #36 8 months ago

i thought that looked pretty cool 2, sounds like they got the marine chatter down to a tee :) I agree it may look a little scripted but this demo looked like the beginning of the game to me so its kind of a given that it would be heaverly scripted. i say give the the game a chance before you spill that bucket of scorn all over it lol could be promising
  • lavalant #37 8 months ago

Maybe cos it's the beginning of the game it's very scripted and COD like (go here do this, watch that) I got the impression from the previews it was squad based and tactical but who knows, they've got till summer next year to fix it. They did a fantastic job with Aliens Infestation though so I'm looking forward to this.
  • irrelevanthuman #38 8 months ago

Oh dear those scripted moments- you know we manufacture those by the way.
  • coolbritannia #39 8 months ago

    Breaks my heart. Just no.
  • coolbritannia #40 8 months ago

The Marines had to escape the atmosphere processor nuke because they were in danger of getting broken windows? Was that the Sulaco hitting the planetary surface?

Gun sound FX are wrong, rhino alien is just crap, the combat lacks any kind of visceral atmosphere (Gears 3 gets closer to the Aliens experience than this), acid is just green blood now? What are they, Predators?

Awesome, power loaders! Oh, I'm just covering them. Alien Queen, why!?? Surely that should be the finale of the entire game?

Absolutely appalling given the source material.
  • mixpython #41 8 months ago

Epic Fail... For all the reasons mentioned as well as no Aim Down Sight???? What the hell?? for an immersive experience you need to feel like you are controlling the character... Also one of the only games that has full co-op bar Gears of War and Call of Duty WAW... and they go fuking it up!! WTF!!!
  • stryker1121 #42 8 months ago

Not what I expected at all. Or maybe too much of what I expected, i.e. scripted events and set pieces. C'mon Pitchford, you're an "Aliens nerd" and this is the best you've got? What do you even need a tracker for when the aliens rush right at you? Eleven minutes of footage does not a game make, but if this is reflective of the final product, count me out.
  • Canyarion #43 8 months ago

I wonder if the makers are reading these comments.

    I bet they're crying.
  • Graveland #44 8 months ago

Think I'll give this 'gay space marines' cliché a miss :)
  • GAmbrose #45 8 months ago

    @Micky1984 @ lavalant

It's not the beginning of the game, it's the start of act 2!
  • GruttyFuttock #46 8 months ago

    @Canyarion
Lets hope so. They've got it soooo badly wrong.
Why go back to Hadleys Hope in the first place? It's a smoking pile of radioactive ash. (If you're going to go back, a Company funded 'recovery' mission to trap an alien survivor - then it goes wrong on they way back or something, would have been a better way to go.)
Both Marine ships appear go down? Really? How? Why do this from the get go?
Why would you get into an unarmoured, exposed power loader by choice? Especially with all those nice guns around.
Where did the other queen come from? And Why?
Plus everything everyone else said - especially the acid and shoe-horning in aliens species - did they build a zoo on Hadley's? No.
Should have been slower paced, with more tension and been far more tactical.

You've got this wrongety wrong Pitchford. I'm 'freaking out' cos on first impressions, you've blobbed it already.
  • cnlfailure #47 8 months ago

The rule regarding Alien is quite simple - one of them alone is fucking terrifying. More than one and you're screwed. You don't need new kinds of aliens you only need to follow the simple rule.

Incidentally, this is how to make an alien move : 1 - humans turn up, 2 - aliens show up, 3 - humans get slaughtered running away from aliens trying to escape, 4 - very few humans survive having blown the place up in order to win.
