  • wojciechmusialkiewi 25/07/2014

    @sherpa1984 It's not about affording the engines - they are not that expensive and if you know how to build games you can make do with a free one. It's that 3D models require a lot more time to create than 2D sprites - not only you have to create a whole 3D model(which is a skill in itself) but you also need to create textures, lightmaps, shaders and other assets which you normally don't need for 2D sprites. • Digital Foundry: Hands-on with Nvidia Shield Tablet

  • wojciechmusialkiewi 22/07/2014

    I bought the shield specifically to stream from my GTX780 PC in my office down to my 50" TV in the living room. I've bought Gigabit Ethernet switches and laid down cat 6 cables everywhere, hoping that would be enough. And you know what? It's unplayable. It's very impressive technically,but there are these weird fluctuations in frame rate which are incredibly annoying - I think its constantly jumping between 40-60fps which breaks the motion flow. I've tried locking it at 30fps but that doesn't help. Not to mention that any platformers are unplayable because of the input lag - Rayman legends, Rogue Legacy , Spelunky - forget it.
    I was already thinking that streaming is a fad and it just won't ever work well enough. Untill I have tried Steam streaming - the same PC to the same TV,using the same Ethernet cables - but this time streaming to my MacBook which is connected via hdmi to the TV. It's silky smooth - I'm yet to see a single dropped frame, and the input lag is a lot better than it was with the shield - I've played 4 hours of Rogue Legacy over steam streaming yesterdsay, and it was great(anyone who has played that game knows that it requires precise, fast input). I'm so happy with it that I will be selling my shield. Sure,it has portal on it - I've played it and completed it. That, and GTA games are the only good native games for it. For emulation I would much rather use my PSP slim,which is a lot more comfortable to use.
    I loved the Shield when I first got it,but it just doesn't fulfil its purpose.

    @null When going out on a date, do you put your best clothes on, spray some perfume and wash your hair, or do try to look "average"? • What's going on with Microsoft's Xbox One dev kit and launch parity policies?

  • wojciechmusialkiewi 10/07/2014

    I work at a games studio and yes, all our Xbox One devkits look exactly the same as regular Xbox Ones. There is almost nothing special about them. But they have to be ordered from Microsoft, we can't just get a retail console and use it - yes, you can enable the developer mode via debug menu on a retail console,but our certificate server will not talk to it, so we can't run unsigned software on retail consoles. • NIS America Europe online store launches with "ridiculous prices"

  • wojciechmusialkiewi 02/07/2014

    @number1024
    I didn't write what I wrote to make you all go and pay your taxes. It is not my business if you do, and I am aware most people don't pay,mostly because they are simply unaware that they have to. I just got really annoyed with people comparing prices in the US and UK, and shouting "X dollars is Y pounds, and they are charging us Z, what a robbery!!!" while at the same time forgetting that if they were to import something for X dollars, the X dollars + vat + import duty would be larger than Z. That is the problem - prices cannot be matched as most people think they can,because there are costs associated most people are not aware of.

    @number1024

    I don't understand what the problem is. When you buy something on ebay, or from an online store, you get a receipt, right? So, you take this receipt, print it out or whatever, fill out HMRCs form used for paying either import VAT and/or duty tax, attach your receipt to it, and send it to HMRC with monies due. Then, if they ever ever ask if you have paid tax on an item, you will go back to them and say - hey, I actually have, there is this form I filled out 5 years ago.

    You know how much you paid,no? And if you do, you know how to calculate your tax due.

    @number1024 "really dude, If youimport a container and if customs fails to look at that then they have a major issue"

    Look it up - 90% of all containers are released without inspection. I have had tons(literally, tons, as in - metric tons) of goods imported from abroad, and customs agencies intercepted the delivery only few times - most of the times it arrives without anyone looking at it. I still have to pay tax on it - it is my responsibility.

    " If customs requires payment they will make you well aware." - no they won't. That is what I am trying to get across here.

    "Same reason shops dont give refunds without a reciept. They want proof of payment, and your proof of payment is an invoice" - no they don't. In the UK you can also provide a card statement in lieu of an invoice. But that is not important - it is your responsibility to provide a proof of purchase. If you don't have one, then the parcel is either a gift(which is also taxable) or a personal belonging(and HMRC has an appropriate form for that).

    "You talk on behalf of a business sending and recieving goods, charges are different for residential people." - of course I do, but do you think there are two separate custom agencies for business and regular people? It all goes through a single pipe. The thresholds are different,but a 75$ game would still incur a duty to pay.

    @saku_luk There is no law which would allow the customs officer to release a package without paying duties, if duties are due.

    If something is above a threshold, you should pay customs duty, and it is YOUR responsibility.

    @number1024

    That is incredibly untrue. How do you think international business works? So if I import a whole container of something from outside the EU to UK, and customs agency doesn't have time to look at it, it means its tax free, right??? Of course not - there are appropriate forms that you have to fill out and pay. Start ordering lots of things from the US, and eventually HMRC is going to come and knock on your door asking why you are not paying tax - and saying that you didn't get a notice is not an excuse. I have been running an international business for 5 years now, I think I know how this works. But you don't have to trust me - give HMRC a call and ask, they will tell you that you have to pay for every item that is over the threshold, regardless of whatever you got a notice or not.

    >>but that is customs fault not the end recipient

    Lol, good luck with that argument in court once you are ordered to pay due tax after a few years,with all the interest and fines. It is your responsibility to pay tax, if you don't pay your income tax it is your fault,not HMRC's for not reminding you, that's not how law works.

    @One_Vurfed_Gwrx Say thank you to Royal Mail for charging handling fees. And you can avoid handling fees by by pre-paying duties ,like Amazon does.

  • wojciechmusialkiewi 02/07/2014

    @number1024 Even if the item is not "caught" by customs, it is still your duty as a citizen to pay the customs duty. I know many people don't pay it if they don't receive a notice, but it is actually against the law. Customs agencies only have enough manpower to look at <10% of all packages, so it doesn't matter what it says on the box - they simply do not have time to look at everything, and they do not - because you should pay the duty regardless. ""These prices are taking the absolute mickey," wrote William John Jardim. "Fairy Fencer F is $75 in the US, which equates to approx 45. "

    At $75 you need to pay customs tax in the UK, which for the value of $75 works out at 8.77, and you also need to pay handling fee of 8, which brings up the total price of your purchase to 61 - actually more expensive than buying from their store, and that is not including shipping from the US. You people keep forgetting that customs duty is a thing.

    I am enjoying the game a lot - with a Logitech GT driving wheel, difficulty set to very hard and all assists switched off you need to be really careful with your driving. I am training to get my rally licence now(in real life,that is), and while driving in a game is obviously not as good, it is pretty entertaining regardless. You certainly have to keep shifting gears and picking the driving line correctly to win.

    @Darren - I disagree a lot. The current cockpit view is fantastic - If I have my own steering wheel,why would I want to see another one in the game? On the monitor in front of me I see exactly what I would normally see - the window of my car.

    @frazzl You have to be a complete idiot to make comments like this,and clearly don't know anything about Germany. German children are EXTENSIVELY educated about the horrors of the war, and shown all atrocities that Nazis made. They are told about and shown videos of Auschwitz so they know exactly what Nazis did.
    Every single German I have ever met was incredibly apologetic about WW2 and it's something they have a great knowledge of.

    HOWEVER - at the same time, there is a huge ban on PROMOTING nazism. Even though it's a game where you shoot nazis, they don't want the game to be promoting nazis by making them look cool or impersonable. And no, that has nothing to do with kids. It's just that in Germany any Nazi-related material is highly banned. You can go to jail for a few years for doing the nazi-salute in public, or having a swastika flag.

But if you do, it's brilliant, especially if you have a proper steering wheel.

    And I imagine it's similar with the Farming Simulator - it's well done, and if you like this sort of "simulation" games, then go for it.

  • wojciechmusialkiewi 14/03/2013

    @jdrez Yes, I run my own VPS with a minecraft server on it, but it's just not cutting it. I pay $15/month and it struggles with more than 6 people - but it runs FeedTheBest modpack so there are always automated quarries and chunkloaders running. And then I need to make sure I keep everything up to date, need to update the client manualy and so on. Sure, it's no big deal, but this is a relatively cheap service which will be very easy to set up.

    As for people suggesting running it on your computer and opening ports to the outside world - I'd hate to break your bubble,but running a modern PC 24/7 to host minecraft is going to use at the very least $5 worth of electricity per month, not to mention that it will shorten the lifespan of your components, so it's just not worth it.

    I am quite happy how close this was to the books.....of course apart from the fact that in the books no one never ever went to the surface during the day because of the monsters. I also think that the camp on the surface was a bit too much, it was supposed to be REALLY dangerous outside, and every visit should be as brief as possible.

    But apart from that, it was great. You could feel what was mentioned in the book quite a few times - that humans are not winning the battle. They even is no battle to fight in anymore - they have lost long time ago,and now are a dying breed. They can survive in the Metro for some time, but if anything, their numbers are dwindling, not growing.

    But seriously, if you haven't read the books, go and do it now(although I've heard that the English translations are not too good, I read these books in Polish and loved them).

    I've got a friend who mods Skyrim to make it the most hardcore experience ever. Currently in his game if you are level one, you get killed by a bear in one hit. Because you know,that's what would happen in real life, right?
    You also need to eat regularly to not starve, and spending to much time out in the rain without a cape means that you will develop hypothermia and die. If you are high up in the mountains and stop moving for a while, you will start shaking and eventually freeze to death. You also need to drink water, but the one from rivers and lakes is likely to give you some disease, you are much better off buying beer in a local tavern.
