I don't have as much time as I'd like to play games these days (get off my lawn) but all the talk on Twitter of a new SimCity piqued my interest. Naturally I headed straight to EG to look for a review but instead I found this article telling me that in order to play this single player game I need to be online.
Pardon my French but what the heck? Am I completely out of touch with PC gaming or is this just some unique EA idiocy? Reply+5
I got my alpha invitation at the weekend and spent some time with it before it shut down on Sunday night. It's looking very promising even at this stage and is likely to appeal to anyone who gets all OCD about games where you can collect/build/level stuff.
My comment about 'being clean' was rather tongue in cheek – I've always been a casual player and, despite playing the game on and off for over 5 years, only ever joined in a couple of raids. A few of my RL friends play it too and my fondest memories of the game involve us lolzing our way through 5 player instances like Scarlet Monastery and BRD. Whenever an expansion is released we all start playing again and spend some time helping each other out while we're levelling :) Reply0
I recently started playing again after being clean for months. My mage was only level 73 and it's taking a frustratingly long time to level him up to 80 – he'll probably get there just in time to start grinding up to 85 when the expansion comes out :/ Reply0
The problem is that there's not a lot of money in advertising anymore unless you're Facebook so ads are only going to get more intrusive and annoying to try and maintain returns. A lot of people are going to be watching next month when Murdoch puts up his pay walls and I suspect that unless it's a total disaster many other sites will follow suit.
How many of you buy games magazines? Why is the concept of paying for online content so different?
I'm not saying that EG should only offer paid access but I would be more than happy to pay some money to view the site without any adverts. Reply+1
Is there anyone else who'd like the option of paying a (modest) subscription fee to get rid of the ads on the site? I like Eurogamer and want to support it but the flash ads on here make me want to punch myself in the face.
Maybe they could get away with charging a slightly higher subscription and including benefits like early access to some game betas or the odd special offer. Reply-6
I've been using/developing with Flash since it was FutureSplash Animator. Back then it was a nifty way of creating effects on websites that couldn't be done any other way. Now it's a horrible bloated piece of crap that's often abused by lazy, feckless developers and I welcome its demise.
Those of you saying you should have the choice of whether or not to run Flash or view Flash content seem to be missing the point. You still have the choice of tablet hardware that supports it (lol) and if you want to watch stuttering videos and kill the battery life then that's up to you. The iPhone and iPad are consumer electronics aimed at "average consumers" and average consumers don't know or care what Flash is - if they visited a Flash heavy site on their iPhone and suddenly the battery ran out, they wouldn't think "oh well, I made the choice to visit this site so it's my fault the battery's dead", they'd assume that there was something wrong with the phone. Another great article, Rob. I miss getting my Thursday GI.biz newsletter fix though :(

@Lankysi that's the point though - these parents don't see games as being anything like films. The idea of age ratings for films has been around for a long time and is very familiar to everyone. As you point out yourself, the problem is that they believe a game is "just a game" and therefore can't be as bad as a film. I bet that most parents who let their children play 18 rated games wouldn't let them watch 18 rated films.
These same people then wail and complain about all the prostitute killing going on because they're genuinely surprised that games (which are toys and therefore just for children) have this kind of content. Reply+7
The problem of ill-informed parents buying innapropriate games for their children will start going away as "our generation" (twenty/thirty/forty somethings) have children. Anyone older than that is unlikely to have had any exposure to video games growing up and therefore doesn't understand the difference between Modern Warfare and Super Mario Galaxy. To them, video games are toys for children and they have no interest in learning any different. Reply+18
Great screenshots but Eurogamer's gallery code really sucks. I can either see a pathetically small image or one that's so big I have to scroll around it.
I missed out on Final Fantasy because I was too busy playing Bart vs the Space Mutants on my NES and then I stayed loyal to Nintendo while the franchise moved to Sony. Is it worth me getting this for the iPhone or just waiting for the new one on the Xbox? I do like a nice RPG now and again. Reply0
I preordered mine from the Cribbs Causeway Virgin in Bristol and then took the day off work, bought a crate of beer and lined up outside at 9am to collect it.
Well, I say "lined up" but actually I was the only person there apart from the Virgin staff and a cleaner.
I found my VGA adapter and plugged it into a monitor along with the arcade stick for a few games of Soul Calibur recently. It still looks amazing all these years later :) Reply0
I was quite excited about this game after seeing them pitch it at FOWA. I signed up a couple of weeks ago, just after the official launch, and was put off by the bugs and the lack of anything interesting to do :/

Wolfenstein 3D was the first FPS I ever played and I've had a soft spot for the franchise ever since. I'm really looking forward to playing this one :) Reply0
