This game is seriously good, and very much worth investing time in. There's a great 'noobie' introduction on the distant worlds forum that encourages you to switch all of the automation off to begin with, and I found that a very useful starting point.

Where the game really gains extra points from me is in the way it accommodates modding - the code is very easy to edit, and you can add in new races, new ship graphics, characters, technologies, and so on. In fact, my first modding effort (which was going to be simple at first, but has spiralled out of control), should be up on their forums some time this week, I hope. I have added in a bunch of new races (BSG, Star Trek, Star Wars etc.), changed all of the ship graphics, added in a new musical score, and am just testing before I write it all up and pop it online.

If you enjoy 4X games, particularly stuff like Europa Universalis, you need to try this game out. 7 seems a very conservative score to me - it's a 9, nudging a potential 10, for me. Best game I have played in ages.

Should EA have to include female versions of all players in FIFA, so you can choose to have Wayne Rooney or Waynetta Rooney in the squad (obviously with equal stats, as it could get them into hot water if they go changing those)?

@dirtysteve - yep, I bought into the DayZ SA early access, after friends talked me into it, and I was pretty gobsmacked when Dean Hall left the unfinished project. Even more concerning is the snails pace of development which is still massively behind the original mod and offshoots such as Origins. And now Sony are about to release H1Z1, which looks far more complete and is free to play. I have to say that, bar a few notable exceptions (Prison Architect being one), I have not been impressed by Early Access on Steam (my own fault for buying into the hype, I suppose) Reply 0

The mainstream games industry is really on a creative and innovative streak at the moment. It is great to see so many sequels and annual franchises as this keeps things fresh. Even better, in terms of the indie scene, is we can now buy games before they are even finished (with the added bonus that they may actually never even be finished). Golden age of gaming. Reply +3

The main thing I have taken away from this article is that the console's interface sounds unintuitive and badly designed. Given that it is based on Windows 8 I suppose I shouldn't be surprised.

As things stand it is highly unlikely that either Xbox One or PS4 are going to tempt me away from the PC and back into console gaming. Yeah, I know, I doubt they will miss me - but I wonder how many other gamers this will also apply to?

Imagine this for the Wii-U version - you're exploring Hadley's hope in teams, like the amazing opening act in the film - the U controller screen acts as the iconic motion tracker (so you have to nervously take your eyes off the corridor!), and in online coop, you get a (deliberately sketchy/scrambled) video of what your partner sees in the corner, just like in the film... .... .....

And then Bowser jumps you from behind and carries off Princess Peach, before Mario and Luigi appear and have to smash some blocks and jump on some koopa troopers, whilst you waggle the controller to power up your special move, whilst balancing precariously on your wii fit balance board, all the while blowing the dust from the top of the console? Meanwhile your granny is wondering when she gets a chance to do some ten pin bowling

Good review - I entirely agree that much of the game feels unfinished, although I did enjoy playing it until the last patch seemed to dramatically increase my sound issues and the regularity of CTDs. I'd also second your view that the RPG-lite characterisation of having a family tree to play with, and favourites to promote within it, is pretty lacking this time around. As soon as the mod community get to grips with it I'm looking forward to seeing this side of the game reinstated and expanded on. I also hope they mod the rules so you have to take more than the region capital to control each region - you should always need to control the port as well, and maybe more than 50% of the other settlements?

In the meantime I'm back to playing the Stainless Steel mod for MedTWII whilst they get Empire patched up and working.

Looks interesting, and a great score. I'm still not totally convinced by the look of the combat, and the good/evil thing being still very black and white (scuse the pun) is a concern (and a criticism regularly levelled at Bethesda but not seized upon here). I'd like to know more about what there is to do in the game, what are the side missions like, that kind of thing. The review was well written, but I need more specifics and less prose ;)

Graphically it looks similar to the first game (which didn't really grab me) and the likes of Zelda - it will definitely appeal to my better half, so will undoubtedly pick it up at some point (and probably thoroughly enjoy it), but for the time being I'm going to buck the forum and comments trend and retain a degree of scepticism (and save my money for Far Cry 2 or Fallout 3) :p

edit: funny that the Spore review is mentioned above, as I'm still feeling mightily ripped off by Spore (and the glowing EG review it received), and I'm getting whiffs of Spore from this review (and the lack of specific information about what you actually *do* in the game). Or maybe I'm just kidding myself in an effort to save money ;)

Another vote from me for Spore being a rip off. So predictable that the expansions were lurking on the horizon - they seem to have decided to remove the 'game' from Spore, as they hope they can sell it back to us in the form of expansion packs. This is one of the very few instances where I feel some partisan support for the evil internet pirates, but I'll just register my dis-satisfaction by not playing the game and not paying for the add-ons (I also think EG should re-review the game minus the rose-tinted specs) Reply 0

  • tincanrocket 12/08/2008

'Fallout 3 may represent the future of yesterday's RPGs, going back to when they were cruel, stubborn, and yet filled with memorable stories, rather than an evolution of the flashy, friendly, and often anaemic titles of today.'

Nobody read this bit, then? I'll definitely be getting this - it may not match the first two classics in the series, it will probably feel stilted and buggy in parts (all Bethesda games do), but it will also almost certainly be better than 90% of the other games available. Mass Effect was, for me, a very well directed, but ultimately shallow, repetitive and linear experience. I can put up with ropey graphics and forgetful AI if I can enjoy freedom and the ability to enjoy my own experience of the game - with Mass Effect I just felt I was being driven down the same corridor that everyone else playing the game had also experienced - not really my definition of an RPG.

Oh, and the collector's edition Vault Tec lunchbox is simply too tempting ;)

MIDI is the way to go with all of this, I'd guess, particularly if they want to add the ability to use keyboards?

Of course, with the lack of cross-compatibility there is a gap in the market for the like of Mad Catz to make some kind of adaptor that would allow you to use older instruments with newer games.

In terms of storage, which is the main reason why I haven't bought Rock Band despite liking the look of it, I suppose they could opt for inflatable guitars with the buttons on them? Hell, why not just do a game that actually senses what you are playing on a proper guitar? The Line6 Variax is, I think, capable of outputting a digital signal - you'd then be playing a game and actually learning to play a real guitar. Maybe a bit too much like 'edutainment'?

Well, I was thinking they could have some kind of harvesting multiplayer game - each round one player takes on the role of Big Daddy, who has to defend his Little Sister as she harvests ADAM on one of the levels. The other players play as Splicers and have to kill the Little Sister - when they die they resurrect, but their bodies can be harvested, adding to the potential score of the Big Daddy that round. Take it in turns playing Daddy, and see who gets the most ADAM over the course of the matches.

The Splicers would need to work together, stalking the Little Sister and choosing a good moment to attack (i.e. when she can't easily escape to one of the holes in the wall). Perhaps there could also be separate teams of Splicers working against one another to addd to the fun?

It'd need to be well balanced, so if there were tons of Splicers you might need 2 Daddies...

I was initially concerned about the save system, but knowing that it only really effects the main storyline am actually very supportive of this approach. It makes sense to me, and means that the game can and will be played in a variety of different ways. The movie analogy and additional tension seem like good arguments for this.

Likewise, I was also a little concerned about the sandbox mode and the fact that your health is constantly draining, but again this means it is more about survival, increased tension, and a race against time.

Obviously, I have only played the demo thus far, so my opinion may change with the release of the full version, but at the moment I personally applaud Capcom for trying something new and different, for using the save system to add to the game as a whole, and for not following the cookie cutter game design that has become so prevalent in recent years. Naturally, this won't appeal to everyone, but, for me at least, the concept fits perfectly.
