Am I right in thinking you have to sacrifice an existing character at level 55 or above to create a Death Knight? Cos that is going to be a massive wrench. :(

My biggest complaint about this game (which I'm enjoying) is simply that you don't develop the same kind of bond with your party that you do in a more standard RPG. The Pokemon-style play where you're constantly upgrading your party somehow diminishes the experience. Other than that I think it's a fantastic game. Reply 0

The Cube is alive and well and living in my house. Favourite console by far. "Cult" seems somehow pejorative, implying a niche, uncritical user base. Animal Crossing on Cube was seminal, seminal I tell thee! And not just because I found it arousing. Reply 0

Wendelius, I do confess that I am very interested in seeing what they've done with other locations in the world - not quite interested enough to keep playing (I had a few issues with the gameplay early on too) but interested enough to want to see it! :) Does anyone have any links to some in-game footage of the Old Forest, Bombadil, etc? :) Reply 0

"Tolkien fans thought they really were in Middle-Earth; it really was the place that they had come to expect - to some extent. All of us read the books and had different images in our head."

Pffft. This Tolkien fan gave up in disgust after a few hours' play.

edit - Mo0k, yes, that would work IF you were in the Prancing Pony. Any old dev can cobble together a 3D space with a few textures and a generic cod-celtic soundtrack and say "hey look it's the Prancing Pony" - that doesn't do it for me. I was all ready to be won over by this game, I've been following its development ever since it was first announced years ago. As I say, it left me stone cold. It might work as a generic MMORPG but it doesn't work as a recreation of Middle Earth. I've come to the conclusion that it's utterly futile trying to recreate a subjective experience, especially when its so well-loved by so many people around the world. The films failed, and the game fails. Why even bother? The books stand on their own. Create your own world and stop trying to make money off the back of other people's cherished reading experiences.

  • otto 24/04/2007

Wyrm, well in my limited experience, it's EXACTLY like WoW except the graphics/artwork is frankly not as good. They've gone for hyper realism and this of course means that the world actually looks worse that WoW's slightly cartoony universe (marmite thing, personally I love WoW's look). My other gripes with LOTRO are: very poor performance, stutters like hell; the UI is far too cluttered and not nearly as well thought through as WoW; loading screens every time you enter a building??? Yuck!! And all those instances in the early stages of the game really destroy the feeling of being in a massive seamless world, it feels like going back to the days of Baldur's Gate (to match the palette). Finally, for me, the killer is seeing what they've done with the wonderful Middle Earth of my imagination. It's not how it's supposed to look, and I very quickly got tired of seeing "Borimor of Gondor" and "Legalos of Mirkwood" running around cookie-cutter mediaeval villages with Clannad-esque bagpipe music wailing in the background. No no no no. It's just not right. Reply 0

Leaving the split infinitive to one side for a moment ;)

I've got to say, that description of the gameplay does not sound as if it's aimed at "more mature gamers" to me. The fact that they're targeting the 360 says it all.

  • Apple could do console - analyst

  • otto 07/12/2006

While agreeing with everyone that analysts are stupid, the Pippin was shit, this is a ridiculous notion and I can't see it happening in a million years, can I just point out for the record that Steve Jobs used to work for Atari and he tried to sell them the Apple 2 but they told him to get bent; oh, and I think he invented Breakout for them, didn't he? I'm pretty sure he did.

So a track record of sorts. :)

This next gen is shaping up to be the ugliest ever, and that's quite an achievement given how ugly previous generations have been. Current gen is probably the least ugly, but that's only because the Cube is so flipping gorgeous that it single-handedly cancels out the two most hideous consumer electronic contraptions of all-time.

You've got to hand it to those politicians, they've got right to the heart of the problem. A middle-class white kid in a safe suburb is obviously totally immune to violent videogames. But a black kid in the ghetto, surrounded by guns and violence, oh yeah he's gonna be led away from the straight and narrow by GTA. o_O

  • otto 06/06/2006

Animal Crossing is a classic example of when less is more. The code-swapping system in the Cube version worked perfectly. The more 'online' they try to make it, the less appealing it becomes. How many more years are we going to have to wait for the industry to get over this ridiculous obsession with online play?? Reply 0
