At least they are approaching this project with the right attitude. Good luck to them, I say. We are long, long overdue for a quality game that is also genuinely sexy. Reply0
"And as the debate rages on, Prassel stands accused of deleting threads that contain negative comments on Steam and banning users."
When is EG or any other gaming site going to start questioning why Valve gives developers ban and deletion powers on the Steam forums? Isn't that what journalists are supposed to do - ask questions?
This exact situation has happened several times now on the Steam forums. I was banned on the Miner Wars 2081 forums for questioning the developer's censorious attitude there (the post was also deleted, though not before I took a screenshot), and my support ticket to Valve has (of course) gone completely unanswered. By the time the campaign ends, 3 of the top 4 and 4 of the top 8 most-funded video games on Kickstarter will be old-fashioned, turn-based CRPGs. I think it's safe to say there's a lot of pent-up demand for these sorts of games. Reply+9
"Developer Visceral were ordered to take the series into a more action-focused direction in order to emulate BioWare's Mass Effect franchise and broaden its appeal."
Remember that part, ladies and gents, so that the next time one of EA's developers tries to tell us that "EA isn't pressuring us at all and we have full creative freedom, blah, blah..." you now know that they are completely full of shit. Reply+38
It takes inspirations from the likes of King of Dragon Pass, Shining Force and Final Fantasy Tactics, and is billed as "a mature game aimed at gamers who appreciate art, story and strategy".
It's made by the three-man Stoic team, all of whom are veterans of the Star Wars: The Old Republic BioWare team. Their various backgrounds also involve working for DC Comics and NASA.
These two paragraphs could be their entire marketing campaign. Reply0
It's very easy for Eurogamer and other gaming sites to leap to EA and Visceral's defense in this case, since unlike consumers, they're all getting the game for free (along with the tens of thousands of Euros worth of other games and hardware that are gifted to them by the publishers every year). So for them, DS3 is just another free-to-play game with micro-transactions. Reply+15
So... we're getting a discount on the ripoff price we payed for the VC games on the Wii. Which means our reward for buying them once already is that now we can pay for them again at a non-ridiculous cost.
Titov deserves all of the criticism he's getting, but what about Valve? It is an astonishingly stupid idea for them to give third-party developers the power to freely censor criticism in the Steam forums, as Hammerpoint and other developers have been doing lately (Miner Wars' Keen Software and Ubisoft have also been doing this, though not as extensively).
If devs want to censor people in their own domains, that's fine with me. But if Valve is to retain any credibility at all, Steam discussions must be moderated by Valve personnel only. No exceptions. Reply+1
I know of one major problem with Greenlight that didn't exist in the previous system: Games in niche genres - particularly simulations and shmups - have much longer odds of making it to Steam than they did previously, regardless of the quality of the game.
Even polished, slickly produced entries in these genres (like Heaven Variant) are having a difficult time because despite having a passionate fan base, there simply aren't enough fans to actually get the necessary votes to make it on to Steam. Reply0
Wow I am not liking that art style at all. I'd much prefer something in line with the original's more subdued, serious look. This cartoony crap makes it seem like a kid's game. Reply-1
I wish the review had gone into a little more detail, particularly with the screen. Aside from being a resistive touch screen, what about the actual picture and color quality?
Also, what about the speakers? Sound quality isn't touched on at all. This kind of info is important considering there's no way for us to get a hands-on demo of the device without buying it. Reply+3
I guess nearly everyone is expecting the first wave of big Kickstarter-birthed RPGs (Wasteland, Shadowrun, Eternity) to disappoint in some way, but I'm not one of them.
I'm sure the review scores are going to fluctuate a bit - a lot of younger reviewers probably won't "get" the appeal of tactical turn-based combat or extensive dialogue trees - but as long as the devs stick to their pledged designs, little problems here and there are going to bother me in the slightest. As Dan points out, these types of games have been largely absent for nearly two decades now. Even a merely decent game would be a great relief. Reply+29
