I agree about the storyline. The RE series has always been a shambling mess of loose ends and the few answers that are given merely spawn more questions. I always got the impression that when they designed RE4 they allowed their choice of engine to determine the potential storyline.
As a game taken in its own right however RE4 was ground-breaking. The pacing was excellent; it was basically 20 hours of "out of the frying pan, in to the fire!". Technically it was a huge achievement on the Gamecube. Sure it was too reliant on shooting at times, and light on puzzles/story but it's a hell of a game. Reply+1
I'm surprised the retrospective didn't mention the fact that despite it being "The Real Driving Simulator" a perfectly viable tactic was colliding with a barrier at 150mph and bouncing your way past the pack in to first place.
I enjoyed GT and GT2 but it does always amuse me how so many people gloss over the lack of damage model in what's meant to be a super realistic driving simulator. I'm aware that it was apparently due to licence issues from manufacturers in that they didn't want their cars depicted with damage but even so... Reply-2
I actually read the title of this article, and every mention of the game title in the Soldner voice in my head. The most perfunctory vocal ever recorded. Reply+2
If I've never played any of the series previously, will I be able to pick this up and play it with a vague idea of what's going on in terms of storyline? Reply0
Actually its a old concept tweaked to better sell a game. The difference is the episode part or like how XBL demos of arcade games are done. Give a little piece of the game, hopefully capture the gamer attention to see more, sell them another chunk or totally wow them to purchase on the spot. It has worked on me for XBL demos where if i really like them, I usually purchase on the spot. Its the old car salesman approach. Never let the buyers off the lot if possible. Try to nail the deal because once they leave, nine times out of ten they will not come back.
And this is different to the shareware model how exactly? Reply0
Good idea but nothing new. Essentially the shareware model applied to downloadable content.
Admittedly Molyneux isn't overtly claiming it's an entirely new concept but it is at least a little amusing to see a very old concept being dressed up in the way that this is. Reply0
Looks really good. I'd rather have Kane as the main character, but otherwise I'm impressed. Although I was one of the few that really liked the original. Reply+4
Somehow Raiden made the greatest character turnaround in gaming, from imbecile in MGS2 to total badass in MGS4, so I'm actually looking forward to this.
I think a lot of this stems from Kojima's ego after the epic amount of butthurt he sustained when the fans weren't keen on Raiden in MGS2. I get the impression he was determined to make Raiden as awesome as possible in MGS4 to try and prove something. Reply+1
Hmmmm.... I was really looking forward to this but now I'm not so sure. I quite enjoyed the first one, or rather I enjoyed the first two thirds of it. From "Freedom Fighters" onwards it was a bit of a slog. Interesting characters and so on.
I'm not so sure about having Lynch as the main character or what soud like deliberately obfuscated visuals. Still it's definitely far too early to draw any conclusions. Reply0
Very unfair to dismiss Clear Sky like that. As has been stated in comments above it introduced a working weapon upgrade system, visual enhancements and finally made money a useful commodity. The faction system, whilst flawed did aid in making the world feel more dynamic and alive. Unfortunately it became pretty much an on-rails shooter for the final section (2 hours or so), but then again so did the original STALKER.
Also no mention of the enemies that could land a dozen hand grenades between your feet from 1500 yards away? ;)
Yes, if you have a PS3 then you can use that as a connection point for your PSP irrespective of whether the PS3 is connected by WiFi or by Network cable. It's in the Connection Settings on your PSP. Reply+1
@dominalien - That's a good idea. Trophies don't hold much sway for me though, and I rarely play through games like DS more than once. Good suggestion though. Reply0
I finished it for the first time over the weekend. It's a very enjoyable game, although I'd recommend setting it to "hard" to get the most out of it, otherwise you're swimming in ammo and the enemies aren't that threatening. Hard difficulty means that ammo is a lot more scarce, and the necromorphs are deadly.
As a whole, the plot is fairly derivative. It's certainly nothing new, but it's exceptionally well presented and will draw you in. It really finds its feet during the final third or so. I'd certainly recommend it. Reply0
I've been asked if I'd like to switch a brand new copy of a game to a second hand copy to save a fiver many times in Game. Never happened to me in GameStation though. Reply0
