    I wouldn't blame you for failing to understand the meaning behind 'upstream and downstream gamer'. It's a rubbish substitute for the more common descriptions of the two demographics (core and mainstream, traditional and non-traditional etc.) .     Has there really been much anger directed at the Wii? Apathy and derision definitely but anger?
    I'd guess that most people who feel unhappy with the console have been disappointed with the games instead of Nintendo or the influx of the 4 to 84 demographic. That was the problem for me for sure.

    I bought one at launch and the quality and quantity of releases just wasn't at the same level as the other two consoles (for the games I was interested in of course). Plus when they did arrive most of them sold so poorly that it hurt the chances of more to come. There's no question that 3rd party games can sell on the Wii. The sheer amount of poorly made 'me too' shovelware being indicative of that but the games that might appeal to the core gamer like No More Heroes 1/2, Zak & Wiki, Madworld and Dead Space Extraction haven't had the same luck or at least it seems that way.     What about UT3, Mirror's Edge dlc or the new Batman Joker character?

    It's a pretty bizarre 'exclusive' to have for only one country. Especially since the new peripheral games like this one and DJ Hero aren't going to sell to the casual audience or the hardcore I don't think. It either has to be a guitar or on the Wii.     Reply 0

    The article does paint a bit of a misleading picture of people who play games regularly imo i.e. the 'hardcore' which is odd considering that it's got to be a large chunk of the site's audience. In fact it pretty much picks the lowest hanging fruit with the basement dwelling adolescents assertion, who regarded people who may only play games once or twice a month as a threat to their hobby, which is retarded frankly.

    The main point of criticism with the current influx of 'casuals' isn't the people, because they've always been there as the article actually mentions, but more the huge volume of shit games being released for the Wii. Which sounds like a chicken and egg scenario, but as the PS2 showed there is nothing stopping 3rd parties making genuinely decent, fun accessible games. Of course it isn't going to ruin gaming forever or any of that DRAMAOMG just the Wii :)     Reply 0

    I really don't think that's the case as far as the Wii is concerned. Resident Evil: UC and Lego Star Wars were the most recent million selling 3rd-party games for the console that were actually rated over 70 on metacritic (To my knowledge of course). Both were released about 9 months ago.

    Not saying Metacritic or scores in general are the be all and end all,but a publisher isn't necessarily going to want to risk making another Zack and Wiki or NMH when the majority of the userbase is buying the Carnival Games, Sports Party etc. type of game that doesn't have the pressure of needing a 'good' score to sell an incredible amount.

    It's just these two quotes raised an eyebrow slightly:

    "Mass Effect is no more an RPG than something like Devil May Cry."

    "Exploration isn't much of a key factor in the game, therefore it wasn't mentioned."

    Those can't be accurate surely?

    I think there was about 3 seconds of a new cutscene at the start but that was about it. Shame, wanted to see how they fleshed out that cut out chapter.

    It's a bit spoilerish if you haven't played gears before btw.
