@DrStrangelove Yeah, my Skybox hasn't even been connected to the tv for almost 6months it all seems a little outdated to me. If it wasn't all tied up with an internet/phone friends and family deal I don't think I would have any kind of live tv system.
I thought the channel switching stuff made a cool demo but I instantly discounted it as something that wouldn't actually work unless you had a very specific (and probably US based) set-up.
I'm just hoping from something from MS or Sony at E3 that really blows me away. I want a reason to be counting down the days until the new consoles launch. Reply+6
@DrStrangelove But even if you do want to switch every ten minutes you can do it just as fast by hitting the input button on the tv remote.
The only "benefit" I can see to the TV stuff is that you can talk over the tv show you are watching with skype (why anyone would want to do that is beyond me, but I guess kids these days can't even keep off their phones for the length of a film in the cinema so maybe that's the target they're aiming for). @FireMonkey I get that but a billion is an insanely large number. For perspective in Jan Apple announced that they had sold 500m IOS devices in the 6 years they have been available. And a huge portion of that is iphones that people get replaced every 18-24 months. Even looking at all consoles combined and extending the time to 10years 1billion is massively optimistic. Unless of course microsoft are counting IOS and android as next gen platforms. Reply+4
@Moz fair point, but even then a billion is a huge amount. The only way I can see it even coming close is if, like you say, there is a very long tail and during that time prices drop very, very low. Reply0
@kassmageant To be fair, MS actually said that it would be 1bn for all next gen platforms combined. Which still seems a ridiculous step up from 300m this gen.
There is no way that Sony would say anything else at this point as it's simply bad press. If Sony are going to delay the EU release they will do it late in the day just like they did with the PS3. They will ride a positive wave right through E3, GC and TGS and then a few weeks before launch they will say they can't meet demands and it will hit the EU in April.
To clarify I'm not saying this is what will happen, and I would really, really hope they manage a worldwide launch. But if it's going to happen, I see that being how it would go down. Reply+24
@DreadedWalrus Yeah but (and this is obviously just my personal taste) updated versions of their current IPs won't cut it for me. I like gears and forza but they won't sell me a new system.
I am looking forward to seeing some of the new IP at E3 but at the moment I'm definitely not very excited at the prospect of buying the console. Reply+4
Glad to see mention of what I was thinking throughout the whole TV section of the conference last night - I simply don't watch live TV anymore, and from what I read online most people (at least those techy enough to be likely to drop a not insubstantial amount of money on a new console) are trending that way.
My sky box hasn't even been connected to my TV since January, and that certainly isn't because of how complicated it is to push the AV button on my remote. Obviously the xbox will still support netflix, iplayer, etc which I do use, but it just seemed very strange to me to place such a heavy emphasis on something that feels like it is on its way out. @arcam Cheers, for the links, some useful info there.
Unfortunately I normally use the apps on consoles or my tv rather than my PC so command line hacks are out and my DNS settings are already tweaked to get the american netflix catalogue. Reply0
How is the actual streaming in the love film app now?
In my flat the best internet I can get is ~2Mb and at this speed netflix will play at an almost flawless 720p after a pretty short load. iPlayer and Youtube however stop to buffer a poor quality SD stream for 10-30secs every few minutes. Reply+2
@Spong Yeah, instead of global unity sony are going for multimedia unity. They are trying to create a brand that can be used across music, film and games which is a perfectly good reason to switch the focus from playstation to sony entertainment.
Really though it's their choice to rebrand and I couldn't care less. I still call it PSN out of habit (just like I did with opal fruits) but im sure in a few years the awkward rebranding will be forgotten and we'll all be eating starbursts.
My main issue was DarkSpace saying calling it by its actual name would make you a retard which is absolutely ridiculous, particularly when talking about a marginally different 3 letter acronym. Reply+4
@Pandy To use in places that you don't have the wii-u with you?
A playstation specific example but for both xmas and easter they offered time limited sales. During both of these sales I was visiting family and away from the PS3 for a few days. Before the webstore that would have been too bad, this year I logged onto the website and made my purchases at sale prices and downloaded them later. Reply+6
@mr_bez Strange, I just ran the same test and it worked fine for me, I added games from my download list to both my ps3 and vita download queues and it looks like its worked. Both games are showing up in the right system queues on the download queue page. Reply+3
Amazing, I've almost exclusively used the web store since it launched (although really that is a workaround since the ps3 store is a horrible user experience). It's good to see that sony are actually trying to improve this stuff; bodes well for the PS4.
Lets get the webstore working on mobile/tablets now Sony!
EDIT: If you don't have ps+ (why?!) but have a vita/psp you can probably start the ps3 up with remote play to trigger the downloads when you are at work or whatever to have them ready when you get home. Reply+8
Hmmm, the prices seem a bit off to me. Although microsoft will be wanting as many live subscribers as possible I can't image them making the subscription model cheaper over time than purchasing the console outright then subscribing to live. Reply+4
@Cobalt_Jackal It is a bit of a shame but on the plus side hopefully it means the buttons will feel like the vita ones; I really like their slight clickyness. Reply+3
It's a shame as they really make the best arcade racers and with evolution looking like they are taking on forza I'm not sure where I'll be looking for my arcade racing fix.
I'd like to see their take on skate or ssx (or a new freekstyle). Reply0
@BBIAJ I bought it on the same deal but with a mario kart keyring for 95p.
The game really surprised me as I'm not normally that into shooters but the demo instantly grabbed me and the score attack/combo nature of it had me completely hooked for a while. I remember playing some levels back to back for hours to hit the top few positions on the scoreboards. Reply0
