@SiSemnor "Based on these early numbers, Ivy Bridge is pretty much right where we expected it on the CPU side. You're looking at a 5 - 15% increase in CPU performance over Sandy Bridge"

    http://www.anandtech.com/show/5626/ivy-bridge-preview-core-i7-3770k/18

difference according to annand tech is 5-15% that's across all applications, in games its around 10%

@super-krel yeah similar to me had a 560 got a 680 and saw hardly any difference then new cpu and fps doubled made me wonder if my 560 was bottlenecked on the q6600 aswell Reply +1
  • craigm 07/04/2014

    @super-krel agreed i had a gtx680 and a q6600, when i upgraded to an i7-2600k my frame rates virtually doubled Reply 0
  • craigm 07/04/2014

why the 3770k and not the 2600k? they are practically the same same chip there is less than a 10% performance difference between them Reply +16

@bad09 i agree i need my mods, thats why i upgraded my pc instead of getting a ps4, but not everyone who games on pc mods their games

@Guy.J. yeah its not just the cpu but chipset improvments and bandwidth increases Reply 0
  • craigm 27/03/2014

@Guy.J. core usage is deceptive, even without changing gpu i noticed a huge increase in frame rate going from my old cpu to my new one even on games with extremely low cpu utilisation Reply 0
  • craigm 27/03/2014

@bad09 i am ashamed to admit i have never played the original mgs, I think a ps4 may do guy if he doesnt mind missing out on modding and some extra vfx Witcher 3 is on ps4 awsell and i would be surpised if gta v doesnt appear on it at some point Reply 0
  • craigm 27/03/2014

@bad09 heh it was mainly the platforming parts that bothered me but i didn't like most of the visual effects during the scarecrow parts either Reply 0
  • craigm 27/03/2014

@Guy.J. I had almost the same system as you when playing AO except i had a q6600 at 3ghz and a g41 motherboard and for the most part the game ran mostly solid though micro stutter was noticeable occasionally.
When i upgraded to a gtx 680 and i7 with 8gb origins fully maxxed was 100% solid at a constant v-synced 60fps with 0 stutter. There were odd graphical and animation glitches but performance was never a problem.
By the sound of it you notice micro stutter as much as i do, if so it maybe time to upgrade as your system is getting a bit long in the tooth and stutter was one of the first things i started noticing in newer games before i upgraded

@RandolphScott "I want developers to have the widest possible range of characters to choose from. I want them to consider every race, gender, sexuality, ability etc when thinking of a character so we can have rich diverse games. From the standing ovation I think that a lot of devs feel the same."

I'm assuming you are talking about AAA development here and if you're talking about the issues similar to what the remember me devs had when trying to get a publisher then I'm in 100% agreement with you

I will say that that the fact that some publishers seem to have this strange impression that games that don't have a white male lead wont sell is quite obviously nonsense

The issue i have is the criticism of games over the whole diversity issue. I don't like this trend of critics and internet commentators implying that peoples creative works have less value simply because the don't meet some amorphous equality requirement.

First off i want to say that almost everyone in this comments thread should be commended for how considered and intelligent 99% of the discussion in here has been over this issue especially compared to the cesspit that is the comments section on some other notable websites when discussing this issue. @blarty Yeah im with you, misogyny is not sexism or chauvinism yet it get thrown around constantly over silly things which are misguided at best and sexist at worst.

Thing is too when you think about it there should be more misandry than misogyny because women in general have far more reason to hate men than men do to hate women

  • craigm 22/03/2014

@TheHypnotoad Yeah that was partially my point too, The thing is blockbuster action movies have exactly the same issues and get a pass yet AAA games which are their equivalent get railed on despite film having a 80 year headstart on the games industry to get this stuff right Reply -1

  • craigm 22/03/2014

@RandolphScott more to the point the white male characters these white male writers are writing are sub par so what on earth make you think they could do characters more removed from themselves better?

the bigger issue im talking about is the sensaitionalistic misongy and racisim in games articles on sites like kotaku and others, Anna sarkesian and her ilk and the myriad of comments sections with people wailing about a characters race or sex, it's tiresome

not that i think you are wailing, the comments in this thread have mostly been intelligent and well considered

  • craigm 22/03/2014

@RandolphScott that only works if the writers are decent you don't see much evidence of that in the majority of game storylines Reply 0
  • craigm 22/03/2014

@RandolphScott it is forcing though, it's saying you are wrong you should be more like this and that applies pressure, though i am meaning the entire issue not this one devs speech Reply 0
  • craigm 22/03/2014

@PlugMonkey Honestly I think it is due to the fact that most writers in the games industry are probably white males and until there are more female and minority writers asking for more of these characters wont have a decent payoff, I mean it's not like games writers are Pulitzer prize authors Reply +2
  • craigm 22/03/2014

@RandolphScott I just dont like this trend of people trying to force their values onto creators, I have already said that i think people should tell the stories they want to tell regardless of social issues in the real world and applying societal pressure to writers in any medium to be more inclusive is likely to lower the quality of the output.

I like tomb raider, remember me, beyond good and evil, gta:sa and sleeping dogs as much as the next reasonable person and i don't believe that people are less inclined to buy or enjoy games starring minority or female protagonists and i don't think any of the games i mentioned would be improved by the inclusion of a white male protagonist, so why is it you think the opposite would be true for games that do?

@RandolphScott Read my previous post replace female with minority, why is that wrong? Reply 0
  • craigm 22/03/2014

@PlugMonkey I think about gta the way i would gangster movies very few of them have actual fully fleshed out female characters yet they can still tell good sometimes truly great stories though.
Would you have the same issue with a story with all females or is it only all male you are against?
I personally have no issues with either as long as the quality is there.

"if there isn't a specific reason of plot or setting that means they're not naturally occurring, then there's probably something a bit weird going on."

I don't understand your point, I think its perfectly reasonable for any story in any setting to not have any female (or male depending on the story) characters and tbh what I think is weird is that you cannot see that

@PlugMonkey "Yes they should have the freedom, but why would they not want to have cool female characters when cool female characters are cool?"

I don't think anyone is denying that fact but but you can still tell a great story without "cool female characters" in fact if a writer changes their work because they think there is an expectation of female characters the chances are those characters are not going to be "cool female characters" and the chances are the overall quality of the work could be lowered

tldr; "cool female characters are cool" but they shouldn't be shoehorned into a story and as long as the story is good that's ok.

btw that apples for all characters of any gender race or species not just female characters

@PlugMonkey "No, Iím not. Iím saying they should WANT to write a female character, because women are interesting people too. They are simultaneously a part and a symptom of the problem."

Surely they should want to create a good story first? and if that good story only has peripheral female characters in it then so be it, saying they should want to write female characters is idiotic. They should have the freedom to write about what ever and whoever they want and that goes for any writer in any medium. Applying societal pressure to writers to conform to some ideal is not how we get quality output.

@paulf None of the stuff on that page is about actual legal rights, some of it affects men as well as women and the pay gap is mostly untrue as it fails to account for differences in men and women's work lives such as the fact men usually work for longer hours and are denied a pension at the same age as women and also the fact that 90% of all high risk jobs with high wages to compensate for the danger involved are filled by men. if you actually checked the pay packet for most men and women in this country working the same position for the same number of hours their pay would be identical Reply 0
  • craigm 21/03/2014

@paulf Tell me one right that men have in the UK.. hell the EU that women don't have. In fact when you take into account family law and divorce it seems that women have more rights than men, just ask fathers for justice Reply +1

@Darren 100% agree I play games on my pc 99% of the time and only use my PS3 for the occasional exclusive like GTA 5 (was ok still to complete) and last of us (didn't like at all played for 5 hours and dumped it). I play everything on my pc with a controller except for the obvious exceptions i am actually reluctant play fps's with mouse and k/b as i feel my ds3 is far superior and i do play stuff online without any real issues. The turned up nose attide some pc gamers have to controllers is childish and self limiting. Reply -1

@dogmanstaruk have to disagree my previous rig was a q6600 and a 560ti which was only just starting to show its age after years of excellent performance. With the setup i have now i feel will last for at least 3 years and an upgrade at that point will likely not consist of much more than a new gpu Reply +1
  • craigm 08/03/2014

my pc upgraded over the last 2 months

case: crappy old steel thing I've had for ever
hdd: 120gb ssd had for about a year, 1tb hdd £40
    CPU: i5 2500k £112
    gpu: gtx 680 £177
    mobo: Gigabyte GA-Z77X-DH3 £65
    ram: 8gb DDR3 1600 £42.99
    psu: antec 520w £47.99

    Total: £484.98

Easily beats new consoles for under £500 CPU and GPU were 2nd hand everything else was bought new all bought from eBay. you could swap the 680 for a 670 or 660ti and add a decent case and you would still easily beat consoles for under £500
