  • Tomb Raider, Vita's no-show and the mystery of 10m PS4 sales

  • belziah 19/08/2014

    @Skooch

Sony went to From software and said make me a game. That game is Bloodborne. They fund, assist in development and maybe publish. Like Bayonetta 2, this game would not exist without 1st party support. They did the same for Demon Souls.

It's not an existing multi platform franchise, it was never going to be a multi platform title and has not been taken away from Xbox owners.

Attempts to compare the two scenarios are hilariously specious and juvenile.

    @n0signal

Sony themselves admit that PS3 was a struggle. It may have sold well, eventually, but profitability wise, it utterly under-performed.

It took them a while to turn things around but the last two and a half years of PS3 has been good for them.

The success of PS4 thus far didn't come from waiting for Microsoft to fuck up, although it has undoubtably helped, it came for the complete agony of being pimp-slapped in the last gen and I say pimp-slapped in the context of PS2vsXbox.

They still haven't totally learned but they've made a great start. Microsoft will finally steady the ship and Sony better be ready when they do but they've got good a good foundation. And it's a foundation forged in pain.

    @Jbronie123

I don't understand the question but I'll try to answer. It's a big series for me, currently my favourite franchise. It's a Spielberg/Lucas summer blockbuster that you actually get to play and for me there is no greater form of escapism.

Others like the random free-form reality TV that are online shooters for example but for for me a well crafted story and ILM type production values win hands down. Yes it's scripted, but what a script(not so much UC3).

It's the difference between going to the cinema to enjoy an epic and sitting at home watching Big Brother. Anything can happen in BB but it's mostly arse-achingly boring nose picking and naval gazing with a mix of bigotry to spice it up.

Raiders of the Lost Ark that I can actually play, on the other hand, we'll there's just no contest!

I have no problem with high frame rates, they have a time and place. What pisses me off is the whole 60 or death bollocks.

There's nothing twitchy about UC, it's not COD and I don't want it be to COD. I want ND to make UC4 the pinnacle of their 'cinematic' vision and just because they can do 60 doesn't mean they should.

It quite simple really, when ND tells me it real time I'll believe it, however, and it an F-ing huge HOWEVER, they have not said so and anyone that's paid attention can find their statements where they unequivocally state that their cutscenes are rendered on 'farms' of PS3s. I don't expect this to change for PS4.

They've had plenty of time to clarify and have chosen to stick to 'captured'. This Is Not Realtime.

    End of.

Having said all of that, I'm looking forward to have my pants pulled down over this issue and I think we all know this game is going to be the first AAAA(that's right, counts those A's) title in gaming history and EG are gonna give it a 6/10.

Drop the 60fps! Drop it like its hot.

Makes it look like a cheap made for TV movie and it's totally lost the cinematic feel. There's a video on this site of a test of UC3 running at 60 and it looks shite!

Also, this is not the product of a single PS4 and anyone who believes so needs to put the crack pipe down, pronto!

Other than that, the dogs danglies. ND4EVA

Suarez, DriveClub has never targeted 60fps. The original vision was 30 and it's only when the wringing masses got involved that they said they'd have a look but at no time has any official statement claimed the game is 60.

As I say 35 years in and the fact that shooters have dominated games journalism for the last ten years means I've picked up a few things along the way.

Spent last night in a FireTeam with my brother and he's hip-deep into shooters so a lot of discussion was and on the matter.😜😝😳

I can't really compare it to other online shooters 'cause I don't play them but other than the grind I enjoyed myself last night and that's not an experience I've had when trying others.

I hate online shooters, I've stated many times before that I just can't stand them!!

Just spent 7 hours in Destiny, probably three times the amount of time I've spent online in 35 years of gaming. It's a phenomenal package that balances single player, multiplayer, casual and hardcore alike not only with aplomb but with a technical swagger and pout rarely seen in these parts.

It's not perfect by any means, as others have mentioned FOV is a bit tight, the respawning could probably do with spreading out(literally. 20 seconds after killing the last dude the next shift of identical dudes turn up) and the music whilst excellent is just too bloody loud. It's impossible hear anything else outside of party chat which can make playing with strangers unnecessarily hard bloody work. You can't tell where you're being shot from and there appears to be no way of adjusting it.

My final criticism is that the Strike mission is ridiculously hard with an evil difficulty spike just as you get close to completing it. Two and a half hours just to be spammed by Captains just as you're about to take down the final boss is utter bollocks and a shitty grind.

Hopefully all these things can be balanced out and if so, I can truly understand Bungie/Activisions confidence. This going to be huge.

There are no PS4 games that run at less than 1080/reduced effects because of it. It doesn't affect the quality of my purchases.

I think they should put the CatWeagle down. Absolutely no good can come from it. The "game" will never be able to live up to the hype and that in itself will be a crushing blow.

It's quite obvious that Studio Ico have lost their way and Sonys utter inability to articulate anything about it other than excuses has become tedious. Throwing good money and resources after bad does not a good game make.

Can anyone even remember what the concept was?

These articles have nothing to do with next-gen, it's the purest form of click-bait there is. I suspect very few people make a console purchasing choice based on them. There's more to it than that as has been discussed ad-nausea.

FFS! Another 'it's not GTA5' artIcle. Seriously Tom, get the fuck over it. No other game has the budget, the single-minded purity of vision that GTA games have. If T2 didn't have GTA, they wouldn't exist as a publisher!

GTA is not the norm. It's an outlier and constantly comparing every game in this genre to it does them and the developers a disservice and is frankly fucking boring.

You're becoming the Nigel Farrage of gaming journalism. Predictable populist cobblers with the depth of sun-kissed dew, evaporated to by the sunlight of the actual fact that, taken as what it is, a game, it's actually pretty bloody good.

Just finished my Good play through and 'subjectively' the review is bollocks. Yeah the agent side missions are mince, but so was knocking down estate agents sign posts in GTAV.

Delsin and his brother piss all over one-note Cole and Zeke, the gameplay is 'toight, like a toiger' and getting from A to B is an absolute pleasure once you get past Smoke.

No other Super Hero type game is as concise and direct to play. 20 hours plus maxing out Hero on Normal and looking forward to getting well messy and quite Infamous on Expert. That Jaime guy that just left SP certainly knows his combat beans. Makes Batman look likes he's using a Zimmer frame in Arkham City, game I love.

Also, note I make no mention the score!

Oh and my final point, if you don't like having fun, please do not pick up this game, it's not for you.

About 8 hours in and loving it. My opinion doesn't count because I've actually played it but, yeah, great game.

Also, without doubt the best looking open world game released on any platform so far, but again, all I've done is play the thing, so what the fuck do I know.

Apparently, I need Xbox fans to tell me about fun gameplay, as after 30 years of gaming, I don't have a clue?

Oh and Widge for someone that apparently hasn't played the game or even read the review, you're making an awful lot of 'objective' comments. Core flaws unresolved? Pray expound about your experiences with the title?

It's Infamous, the same way that COD is COD every year, the same way that GTA is GTA every 5 years. Looks better very version, and they tweak the gameplay. You still push stick left and shoot anything that moves. You still go to point A, get a mission from person B, drive across town to location C and shoot or rob a muthafucker at location D.

Having said all of that, I seem to have a thing for open world superpower games(except that Superman shat a couple of gens back and Saints Row which for the life of me I just can't stand). The original Spidey games, Infamous, Prototype all appeal to the inner child in me.

Never ever really had a thing for shooting hundreds of people in the face and dunking my genitals on their twitching corpse.

I guess my point is Fun, if you don't find something fun, chances are 4 versions down the road won't change that. For example, I've spent about 20 minutes in the last ten years in online shooters, can't fucking stand them, and lot of the people I encounter in them, however Titanfall's set-up, in Private lobby looks like the sort of thing I would find immense fun.

@rockavitch Desmond died in AC4. Who are you talking about?

So Sucker Punch bent over backwards not to reveal the final powers but you pricks thinks it's your job to do so in a review posted the day before launch.

    Slow golf clap.

Edit: Either the review was edited or it is indeed I who is the prick. My first read was a skim and I swear Ollie mentioned previously unmentioned powers. I offer my wholehearted apologies and will have my wife spank me accordingly in penance(it really is punishment, I swear!)

Edit2| was just getting warmed up for a reet spanking when I noted that the cock indeed mention previously unmentioned powers. If you can't review a game without spoilers don't fucking bother.

Oh and tell about the new innovative gameplay in GTA5. Other than being able to swap characters it's still go to a, pick up b, take a picture of c, dump a body at d. I loved it but I think you need a new dictionary. Don't have a problem with the score, it's the mealy mouthed attitude that comes with it.

And I've been done out of 'punishment ', time to drop some china .........
