  • A schism tears unofficial legacy World of Warcraft service Elysium apart

  • Xensor 17/10/2017

How does the saying go again... "Power corrupts, absolute power corrupts absolutely". It's a damn shame as, while personally I've never been interested in vanilla servers, i can see the appeal to certain groups and things like this will not only erode trust in the 3rd party servers but also force Blizzard's hand even more to come down even harder on these unofficial server. A few people get greedy and everyone loses. Reply 0

  • Nostalrius team meets Blizzard and says company wants legacy WOW servers

  • Xensor 09/06/2016

Is that enough for you in all honesty? Would it keep your interest up in the long term? Something like the Barrens chat was a confluence of design that can't be replicated beyond vanilla imho so would a server permanently fixed at patch 1.11 be enough to keep you going for say 2 years?

You're right that side of the game does still exist, guilds are still a thing and always will be. However humans will pretty much always take the path of least resistance if they can, i doubt there many people currently playing the game who get a team together using the old school town crier method (although saying that i did see shoutouts in Legion beta but i dunno if that'll carry over). It's just so much easier to click a button and 10 minutes later be in a dungeon with zero effort involved rather than spend a half hour looking for a goddamn healer! :) Not better tho, just easier.

I do miss what WoW meant to me back in the day, just like i miss what FF7 meant to me the first time i played through it. I miss being in a guild with friends and going raiding and getting those first kills and hearing the cheering on teamspeak. Those were some good days :)

OK so lets say that Blizzard release a vanilla only server, patched upto 1.11 so it has all the vanilla raids and content upto Naxx. Would you honestly, hand on heart says that after a year of no new content you'd still be logging in to grind the same raids for no new loot or the same battlegrounds for no rewards? Remember this is vanilla so no death knights, no monks, no Illidan, no Lich King, nature resistance as an item stat, no alliance shaman, no horde pallys, requiring 8 FULLY GEARED tanks for the 4 Horsemen etc etc. Honestly would you want to go back to the old low-poly models for your toons?

IMHO there are far too many rose-tinted specs being worn for this - i too would like back some of the old magic that i felt when i first started raiding at the end of vanilla then full-time in TBC but i'm well aware that a lot of that magic was the people i raided with and to a certain extent the journey through the story. My personal favourite raids came in TBC and TLK and i was never a fan of world pvp so for me vanilla servers would be interesting for a couple of months at most but i, an i suspect a majority of WoW players, have neither the time nor the inclination to put in the effort to see all the content.

I've listened to a lot that Kungen has had to say on this and he speaks very passionately about how hard it was back then, how only 0.1% of the player base even saw the inside of Naxx let alone get past the first trash which was as tough as bosses in earlier raids. Was this really a good thing? Do you want to grind BWL, ZG and AQ40 for months to get geared enough to even enter Naxx? Don't forget about the very expensive and time-consuming alchemy which was absolutely required to even attempt the hard stuff.

Kungen also repeatedly showed a video that supposedly shows the difference between vanilla and WoD - the vanilla part was mass open-world pvp set to some epic music and cut to look fantastic. The WoD was some fairly dull dude in his garrison talking about some follower quests with no music or any embellishment. This comparison is, in a word, bullshit. If he had compared open-world pvp in WoD to open-world pvp in vanilla then fine, i'm all for that. But comparing it to a system which didn't exist in vanilla and more importantly doesn't replace open-world pvp is a garbage argument and proves nothing.

Saying all this, i will however agree that Blizzard has gone to far to be accommodating to casuals than it should have done. I always thought that forcing people to make instance groups in a city then run to the instance was a good way of generating that initial camaraderie, encouraging talk and stopping the people dropping after the first wipe whilst shouting "FUKIN NOOBS GIT GUD!" Blizzard basically turned WoW into a single-player online rpg where you don't need to actually interact with another human to complete most of the content including raids. They went too far. But i don't think vanilla only servers are the answer.

1 - Of course, our brand new matrix-delineated temporal upscaler will make the internally rendered 720p look as good as any 1080p game!
    2 - 100% 60fps*
3 - We are looking into adding both female AND non-caucasian characters in future DLC!
4 - One month DLC??? How about Day ZERO DLC! And as a thank you to our fans, only £9.99**!!

    ** - Rising to £14.99 on day 1

I have yet to play This War of Mine but thematically it reminds me of Papers Please, another game where you have to do what you need to do just to survive, to keep you family feed and healthy. Morally ambiguous choices, turning a blind eye to the suffering of others or even causing that suffering just to survive and then living with the soul-rotting consequences - there are not enough games like this! GTX 670
    12 GB DDR3 @ 800MHz

So assuming that the i5-2500K is a faster chip than my i7, it looks like I fail to meet the minimum specs for everything except the amount of RAM. And yet AssCreed 4 ran fine when whacked up to the max. I don't understand what Ubi are doing.

  • The Witcher 3 includes Gwent, a Hearthstone-esque card game

  • Xensor 16/08/2014

I think the issue here is one of expectation, possibly unreasonable consumer expectation, vs the actuality of running a game development business.

Now we can all agree that CDPR have said time and again that they will not have different versions of their game for different systems, no exclusivity within the game. The announcement of these additions to the XB1 collectors edition does not change this fact. The game will have the same content across all the systems.

The actuality of running a business like CDPR is simple - everything costs money. The global advertising budget for a game a big as Witcher 3 will be huge. Microsoft are currently throwing money around like candy in the hopes of getting any exclusivity deal they can find for the XB1 in the hopes of making up the lost ground on the PS4. I would not be surprised if MS offered CDPR a sack of money to make exclusive in-game content for W3, which CDPR would have rejected. However the card decks are not exclusive in-game content so adding this to the XB1 CE is not breaking their vow, no matter how much it might feel like it is. Microsoft would have offered them a big money sombrero for something, anything that they can use as a differentiation for the XB1 CE verion of the game and CDPR have given them that something in exchange for Microsoft's marketing muscle in some form.

However the major issue for CDPR right now is one of perception - what does this deal look like to the average CDPR consumer who has read time and again that CDPR only does parity across platforms. This will be perceived as a complete betrayal of that ideal (even though it isn't really), the pedestal the CPR currently sit on will be swept away by the tidal wave of internet rage and everyone who held CDPR up as the one beacon of fairness in the industry will realise that they are just a business, perhaps not on the level of an EA or Acitvision, but a business nonetheless.

Personally, I think this was a bad move CDPR, yes they will have a short-term gain but longer term they had the best reputation in the gaming industry bar none and now it will be permanently tarnished, even if that tarnish is unfair from a purely logical standpoint.
