Great article. I very much feel Keiron's pain at watching a mate play the demo. There's nothing as frustrating as watching someone run through experiences like that, not listening to, noticing or really experiencing anything in the environment, only to loose interest and say "its boring".

Aye, cant argue with that, nice to see him giving some time over for this. 90% of my questions went unanswered though :(

edit - actually, re-reading it some of my questions were asked by others. Still would have liked to have seen how he felt about the whole steam / self publishing area.

I sent a follow up one to my publisher / developer relationship one which got through...

"Given your previous answer to my question regarding originality being stiffled by publisher involvment, do you believe services like Valve's STEAM are the answer, since they potentially give total power and total profits to the developer rather than a middle man, allowing them to self fund, and self publish."

Would like to see that answered if possible.

@Holsty, indeed most people do still consider comics and graphic novels to be purely for kids, but atleast it Proved that the medium was capable of dealing with serious real world issues and events. Reply 0
  • TwistidChimp 30/11/2007

Good question from Wayne there. I reckon personally we need a game that handles something incredibley hard just to prove that the medium is capable of more than just kids stuff. We need our own "Maus". Reply 0

AofT asks: Recently there has been a lot of talk about a lack of graduates qualified for the games industry. But at the same time there are very few companies (especially in the UK) that are actually willing to take on graduates. What is your opinion/stance on this issue?

Peter Molyneux: I go to universities a lot trying to get people to join Lionhead (I was in Cambridge last week, I am at Imperial next week). Lionhead, and the whole of the industry, needs fresh blood. We need graduates that are smart and passionate. So we try and take new gradates on based upon two criteria - how smart they are, and (more importantly) how passionate they are. In my opinion experience counts for less than those things.

pjmaybe asks: Will any of the gorgeous tech bandied about for Dmitri or BC ever find its way into a game?

Peter Molyneux: Absolutely! We are working on a title now which is kind of a hybrid of Dimitri. I am really, really pushing the powers-that-be to allow me to tell/show the world this new project. I know I am prone to say things like 'great', 'revolutionary' and 'ambitious', but this new project its absolutely great, revolutionary and ambitious!

    15:15:58 -

elredeyegrande asks: Any words on the Jeff Minter's recent "outburst"? Or on 'Unity'?

Peter Molyneux: Well, I know what Jeff means. When you are a small team you put so much love into a game in the hope that people will love it, and when they don't buy it it really hurts! I dont blame him for what he said. I am sure from what I know of Jeff he will bounce back. I really wish Unity had taken off but it was not to be.

    15:12:53 -

JYM60 asks: Do you ever think you've thought too much about a game, put too much stuff into it?

Peter Molyneux: Yeah all the time. In fact it has taken me 15 years of design to really realise that less is more. I have been really guilty of stuffing games with features that are not exploited or balanced. Fable II is different though. I have tried to focus everyone on three big features - story and emotion, combat and gameplay (which I am unveiling at GDC).

    15:16:48 -

sabreman asks: Do you have any plans to revisit some of your classic IPs like Syndicate and Populous for the current-gen systems or even Xbox Live Arcade?

Peter Molyneux: I would really love to revisit 1, Syndicate, 2, Populous, 3, Dungeon Keeper. The only problem is that they would have to be called something else because EA owns the rights, so no plans at the moment.

Who ever green lights this shit needs punching in the neck. Its so frustrating, I, and i'm sure numerous others, have so many ideas of interesting, innovative projects that would be low cost, and do well on Live Arcade, and pretty much all we get is unmitigated tripe like this.

Lets face it, pretty much all the best games on Live Arcade are sodding ports or remakes. Almost without exception the new stuff has been utterly dire. Why is it so hard for them to find some decent sodding titles, a new indi game comes out every fucking week on the pc that is far, far better than almost anything on live arcade.

  • TwistidChimp 26/11/2007

Oh ffs, not this again. Final time, eberts argument is based soley on his own definition of what constitutes art. A definition not supported by the vast majority of people. Or dictionaries.

  • GH3 gets Halo theme

  • TwistidChimp 22/11/2007

Got my copy of GH3 yesterday, its excellent, Edges main problem with it was that it didn't really advance the series in any large way. But then.. so what, i'm new to Guitar Hero and this one's got a great track listing, and with lots of downloadable band packs on the way, I really cant complain. Reply 0
  • Brothers in Arms Hell's Highway

  • TwistidChimp 22/11/2007

Looks promising, but for the love of all that is pure let us turn off that hideous slow motion grenade feature, its just jarring, both in terms of gameplay and themeatically. Its not the sodding Matrix, its not a rag doll tech demo, it just breaks the suspension of disbelief utterly. Whats the point in accuratley modelling a town in Holland perfectly and walking the battlefields with soldiers who were there to make the experience as convincing as possible just to blow the ambience in a tacky way like that. • BioShock, Halo 3 not "next-gen"

  • TwistidChimp 10/10/2007

ffs.. now even respected devs are using the phrase next gen as some nebulous sodding buzzword. All next gen ever has, and ever will mean is the next generation of hardware. If you turn it into meaning "a leap in gameplay advancement" then it doesn't mean anything any more.

And whats with all these sodding devs lately talking down other games as a thinly veiled pr excercise to pimp their own titles.

Dear me. EA's musical output in most of its games has been shocking. It saddens me that they think sticking in a random sellection of current nu-metal acts counts as decent ingame music. It saddens me even more that that many people only discover new music through the over produced, corporate ass that makes it into EA games. Reply 0

  • TwistidChimp 16/08/2007

I actually dont think I'll be watching any of the behind the scenes footage of Bioshock. Dont get me wrong I'm fascinated by the processes that must have gone in to producing something of this quality, but I find if I watch the makings of things, it tends to diminish the magic of the film / game itself. Sort of seeing the wizard behind the curtain as it were :)

Ah well thats good to know. I just find it rather ruins my suspension of disbelief. I'm not sure why they deem it neccesary to add it to console fps's and not to most pc fps's. Especially these days. What is it exactly that drives that decision ? Is it a presumption about the sort of screen they'l be using, The distance they think the player is likely to be from the tv, or the percieved intelligence of the people they think will be playing ? • TwistidChimp 16/08/2007

Yeah it is a ludicrously minor point I know, and its obviously by no means a deal breaker (in terms of which version I get, pc or 360). As I say, feels a bit silly bringing it up in light of how astonishing it sounds, but still, it is a bit of a peeve, and I was just wondering if you had any issue with it while you were playing ? • TwistidChimp 16/08/2007

Another quick question Krudster, did you find the item glow in any way obtrusive, out of keeping / suspension of disbelief straining? I realise its a ridiculously minor point when held up to what they seem to have made, but still, its a bit of a worry given that they provided an option to turn it off on the pc version. Reply 0

  • TwistidChimp 16/08/2007

I only hope that Microsoft give this the marketing budget it deserves. They should be shouting from the rooftops about this. Dare I say it, outside of the gaming press, I havn't seen a mention of it. I want to see Bioshock on the side of busses. I want tv advertising.

If this fails at retail.. well.. doesn't bare thinking about really.
