  • Softie2k 19/11/2014

DDOS isn't uncommon in any data center. It may not be a legitimate attack neither - just that the hosting companies that they use report on DDOS for that month.

They may use that data to justify outages that they've caused themselves.

This doesn't necessarily mean that people were trying to hack it.

@Kendrene You'd better learn the definition of feminism before you engage in a debate where you clearly state you're not one.

Feminism: the belief that women should be allowed the same rights, power, and opportunities as men and be treated in the same way, or the set of activities intended to achieve this state

  • Softie2k 15/10/2014

@Deede No, this is wrong. I wasn't a feminist and was just as annoyed at 'men-haters' as much as anyone on this thread. I then had my mind changed by a group of doctors at Leeds University - whom I now go to the pub with regularly. I fought initially, defending my turf, but I soon had to concede after I calmed down and recognise that there is a massive imbalance in the way we're represented in culture and that it has to change.

In fact the change isn't just moral, it's more interesting to boot. I can't wait to see more female developers and what they bring to the development table I can't wait to see more interesting female characters in games, more interesting stories and better portrayals of relationships.

It's all exciting, and it takes nothing aware from men, it's a win-win situation in my view.

Recognising this however, especially if you're defending the opposing view ferociously enough, is very tough and requires a big 'man' to come down and say "sorry guys, I was wrong".

I'm saying this now, as I too have been wrong and had to dig deep - "I was wrong and to all the people I was a twat with, you know I'm sorry".

@joeymoto108 Did you read what I wrote? You've said it's a flimsy argument and I wrote that this isn't an argument any more. Academics have looked at the evidence and there are now hundreds of articles in academic journals (they're not necessarily accessibly to the public, you'd have to go to a library to find one you liked and even order it in the library) about sexism and gender issues in games. The subject matter has closed, it's just those people who haven't read studies that disagree. Reply 0

@the_rydster I'll amend my original post in that case as I understand what you're getting at.

"It's already concluded by the academic community(impartial people who study philosophy their entire lives as a job); games on the whole are sexist."

They don't claim it would be beneficial to alter it, but they do claim that they're sexist. Thanks.

It's already concluded by the academic community(impartial people who study philosophy their entire lives as a job); games on the whole are sexist and it would be immensely beneficial to alter that.

If you disagree with that, it's either because A) you've given it no thought or B) you feel entitled as someone who plays a lot of games to maintain a status quo to avoid your hobby being changed in any way based on an irrational fear you have ,that levels of enjoyment might diminish or your access to your hobby restricted should we let any one who might be different than 'us' have a say in 'our' industry.

I never ever criticise reviewers to be honest, I think Eurogamer is great on the whole.

There's barely any mention of all the content that's missing and how that really affects the game. This is a big series and it's a major draw back to remove a great deal of the content that its predecessors had.

Could you imagine the next Elder Scrolls game going back to linear levels? That's the same thing.

The score might be a fair assessment, but the tone of the review just doesn't sit well with me after playing the game.

@Avaloner I so badly want you to open your mind and see how you're missing the bigger picture. In fact I don't necessary think you are any more, I actually think you're probably more open to what she's had to say than any time before it even though you're defending your position with a lot of enthusiasm.

For me, I see girls and women being victims of culture; depictions of frail or objectified women with few or sometimes no role models, certainly in the way men have.

I'm a regular guy who loves games, AAA with all the stuff that goes with it, but I also want it to change desperately, so that a new generation of women don't see themselves the same way and we'll get more female games developers with new and interesting ideas.

I know that you've put a lot of effort into your arguments, but I do hope that some day you'll see some of the sense in what we've had to say. I don't think we're necessary totally correct with everything we've written, but I hope one day you'll see the sort of change we're getting at and agree/partly agree with it. :)

@dirtysteve If you want to look at opinions with weight, just look at the academic journals that write about the things Anita says and fully agrees with. From an academic point of view, this is all old hat pretty much.

It's just that the general public need time to adjust as more information gets through.

You can see it now as games developers are increasingly using better female characters, especially in Indie games, but a lot less so in 'mainstream' games. There's still quite a way to go though.

Do look at journals and academic writings however, my girlfriend is doing her PhD in this at the moment (well, at least one chapter).

@Avaloner Of course she's trying to convince. Would you say that when you're trying to convince people that "not all black men are rapists" you state that "actually, some black men are rapists".

What planet are you on? Her whole argument is that the industry is one sided, why would she need to argue both sides when one side is totally dominant?

  • Softie2k 28/08/2014

I think the problem here, as expressed by Avaloner, is that people refuse to believe they are influenced by culture. Depictions in films, games and books, don't influence them and they became infuriated by the suggestion that they might be.

There are thousands, perhaps hundreds of thousands of studies that show we're influenced largely by culture, and that's why making games more balanced matters to both men and women.

We've all played too many games that depict women in a totally one-sided manner, so much so that it seems many people here are immune to the idea that it's wrong.

It is possible to change, you just have to realise that depictions of people affect us.
